Isolasi, Karakterisasi dan Potensi Bakteri Endofitik dari Tanaman Zodia (Evodia suaveolens Scheff) sebagai Penghasil Antibiotika
Endophytic bacterium are important to produce antibiotic. We have experimentally studied zodia plant (Evodia suaveolens Scheff) in attempting to isolate and characterize the bacterium. We have also examined potentiality of each isolate to produce antibiotic. We obtained three a isolate of endophytic bacterium that produce antibiotic compounds. Among three isolates, two could form high inhibition zone. MZS-01 formed 10.4 mm inhibition zone against Eschericia coli, while MZS-03 formed 6.96 mm inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus. We described the isolates MZS-01 and MZS-03 based on macroscopis and microscopis characteristic of colony culture
Karakterisasi Mikroflora Alami Saluran Pencernaan Sapi Potong Sebagai Kandidat Probiotik Pakan Sapi Potong
The research about the "Characterization of Natural Microflora From Cow Digestic Tract As Candidate For Cattle Feed Probiotics" has been conducted from April to July 2013 in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Andalas, Padang. This study aimed to obtain isolates and the character of each isolate as a candidate to cattle feed probiotics. This study used an experimental method and analyzed descriptively. The result showed that the bacteria from cow digestive tract were Cellulolytic (110x107cfu/g), Fermentative (85x107cfu/g), Amylolytic (31x107cfu/g) and Proteolytic (28x107cfu/g) bacteria. Two of the probiotic candidate were bacill and coccus, both of them were Gram-negative and catalase positive
Studi Populasi Serangga Sebagai Upaya Konservasi Biodiversitas Sungai Oyo, di Desa Wisata Bleberan Gunung Kidul
Bleberan Village has ecotourism potential in terms of insects biodiversity. Moreover, this village has some beautiful tourism objects, such as Sri Gethuk waterfall and Rancang Kencono cave. In the other hand, biodiversity in this village is yet to be explored, hence this research aims at studying insects biodiversity, especially of  three orders: Orthoptera, Lepidoptera and Odonata. The final objective of this reseach is to provide information for studying and conserving biodiversity in this ecotourism region. The observation was conducted in 10 stations in both Kedung Poh (1st location) and Oyo River (2nd location ). Several ecological parameters were calculated such as density, diversity index, and distribution. In addition, enviromental parameters were also measured, i.e temperature, humidity, and light intesity. This research found 17 species of each order, with the highest number of individuals was observed in the member of Orthoptera, especially withPhlaeoba fumosa; 381 individuals (1st location 1) and 445 individuals (2nd location). In the order of Lepidoptera, species Catopsilia pomonahad the highest number of individuals, there were 31 and 46 individuals in 1st location and 2nd location, respectively. The latter is Odonata, had Orthetrum sabinawhich dominated the number with 252 individuals in 1st location and 188 individuals in 2nd location. This research also revealed that diversity index was varied between 0.79 and 0.99, with all orders were distributed in a clumped pattern. All the environmental factors had been observed and did not show any abnormality, therefore insects couldbe alive normally
Pengaruh Pengaturan Keasaman Limbah Industri Teh Terhadap Pertumbuhan Miselium Jamur Tiram Cokelat (Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K. Miller)
The study about the effect of acidity adjusting of industrial waste of tea production on the mycelium growth of brown oyster mushroom (Pleurotus cystidiosus O.K. Miller) was conducted from January to April 2013 in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University, Padang. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of setting the acidity of tea production industrial waste and the mycelium growth of brown oyster mushroom. This research was designed by completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments, which were pH 4, pH 5, pH 6, pH 7 and pH 8 in 5 replication. The results showed that the treatment of pH 8 and pH 7 on industrial waste of tea before weathering was optimum for the growth of mycellium (18 – 19,2 days) .

Uji Ketahanan Pisang Ambon Kuning Koleksi dari Jambi Terhadap Beberapa Vegetatif Compatibility Group (VCG) Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc)
One of prospective banana collections at Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institute is Ambon kuning (Gros michel) origins from Jambi. The aim of the study was to find out the response of Ambon kuning to some Vegetative Compatibility Groups (VCGs) of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. The research was conducted from November 2012 to February 2013 in the laboratory of plant disease and the screen house of Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institute of Solok. The treatment used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 6 treatments and 4 replications, each treatment consisted of 5 plants. Treatments were 6 isolates of Foc VCGs 01213/16, 0121, 01219, 0123, 0124/5, 0120/15, those were the Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institutes collection. The parameters observed were percentage of plants infected, the incubation period, index of diseases severity on leaves and corm. Data was analyzed by analysis of variance. The results showed that Ambon kuning (Gros Michelcv) was resistant to Foc VCG 01219 and VCG 0120, moderately resistant to Foc VCG 0123, susceptible to Foc VCG 0121 and VCG 0124/5, and highly susceptible to Foc VCG 01213/16

Isolasi Dan Karakterisasi Bakteri Termo-Proteolitik Sumber Air Panas Sungai Medang, Sungai Penuh, Jambi
A study on isolation and characterization of thermoproteolytic bacteria from hot springs at Sungai Medang, Sungai Penuh, Jambi was conducted from March to June 2012 using a descriptive method. Seventy thermophylic bacteria were isolated from the hot springs. A Total of 39 thermoproteolytic bacteria 39 were identified. The highest enzymatic activity (13.59 U/ml) was shown by isolate MI2.3 from a location at which the temperature was 600C. The isolate MI2.3 was characterized as an aerobic thermoalkaliphylic (optimum temperature of 500C, optimum pH of 9.0) bacterium with the ability to produce amylase but neither lipase nor cellulase.Keywords : alkaliphylic, bacterium, enzymatic activity, proteolytic, thermophylic
Komunitas Anura (Amphibia) pada Tiga Tipe Habitat Perairan di Kawasan Hutan Harapan Jambi
A study on Anuran’s community (Amphibia) living in three types of wetland habitats ( i.e: rivers, lakes, and swamp forest) at Harapan Rainforest Jambi was conducted from October 2011 to January 2012 by using Encounter Visual Survey along six belt transects. This study found 115 individuals of Anura’s, which belong to 14 species, eight genera, and three families. Density of each species was different between the three wetland habitats. The highest density in the rivers was Limnonectes paramacrodon (6.66 ind/ha), in the lakes was Occydozyga sumatrana (16.87 ind/ha), and in the swamp forest was Limnonectes paramacrodon (5 ind/ha). Diversity index of Shannon Wiener indicated that species diversity was different between lakes, rivers, and swamp forest (rivers: 1.227, lakes: 1.594, and swamp forest: 1.154). The highest similarity index was found between rivers and lakes (42.86%), and the lowest between swamp forest and lakes (16.67%). Distribution patterns of most Anuran’s species based on Quadrat Variance Analysis were clumped.Keywords: anura, community structure, distribution pattern, wetland habita
Struktur Kelompok, Daerah Jelajah, dan Jenis Makanan Ungko (Hylobates agilis) di Hutan Pendidikan dan Penelitian Biologi Universitas Andalas
A study on group structures, home ranges and plant species eaten by agile gibbons (Hylobates agilis) at The Biological Education and Research Forest, Andalas University was conducted from June to November 2012. Group structures were figured out through direct count method during field surveys, while plants eaten by the gibbons were recorded using ad-libitum observation. There were 15 gibbons which belong to three monogamous groups. Structure of the groups consisted of one adult male and one adult female, one subadult, 1-2 juveniles, and 0-1 infant. Sex ratio of the population was 1.1 : 1. Average home range was 10.9 ha. Population density of the gibbons in a defined area of 62.76 ha was 23.9 individu/km2 and group density was 4.78 group/km2. There were 17 species of plant eaten by the gibbons, those species belong to 11 families, where the highest number of species belong to Euphorbiaceae and Moraceae.Keywords: Hylobates agilis, group structure, home range, food plan
Jenis-Jenis Serangga Pengunjung Bunga Pacar Air (Impatiens balsamina Linn. :Balsaminaceae)
A study of visitor insects to the flower of Impatiens balsamina Linn. has been conducted in two locations, i.e. Ulu Gadut, Bandar Buat, Lubuk Kilangan Subdistrict, Padang City and Koto Tinggi, Surian, Pantai Cermin Subdistrict, Solok Regency in February 2012. The purpose of the study was to determine the species of visitor insects of the flowers of Impatiens balsamina. Direct collection method by using insect net was used in this study. Insects were identified at Laboratory of Animal Taxonomy, Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University, Padang. The results showed that 16 species of insects that belong to 16 genera, 9 families and 3 orders were recorded. The visitor insects were dominated by Hymenoptera order (68.75%) followed by Lepidoptera (18.75%) and Diptera (12.50%).Keywords: Impatiens balsamina, insects, visitors, flower, specie
Jenis-Jenis Burung di Kawasan Cagar Alam Lembah Harau Sumatera Barat
A study on bird species identification at Lembah Harau Nature Reserve, West Sumatra has been conducted from April to May 2012. This study aimed to record bird species by direct observation along road and it’s tributaries. We identified all species and put them into MacKinnon list to predict a total number of species existed in the area. This study found 50 birds species lived in the nature reserve those belong to 24 families and 9 orders. The most abundant was Passeriformes that consist of 36 species and 15 families.Keywords : avifauna, nature reserve, Harau Valley, West Sumatr
