Pigeon orchid is one of epiphytic wild orchids and very important species in the genus Dendrobium. Flowering phenology of this species is still unclear. The purpose of this study was to describe flowering phenology of pigeon orchid. The study was conducted in Limau Manis Padang, West Sumatera and has been done from May until October 2015. Some aspects of flowering phenology such as the phase of flowers, flowering period, rainy time and stigma receptivity were observed. The results of this research  indicated that pigeon orchid flowering was induced by dicreasing of the temperature after rain. Flowers development consist of six phases from bud phase to be wilt with a span of 14 days and sometime stigma has begun receptive before the anthesis but optimal stage of stigma receptivity pigeon orchid occurs during anthesis.Key word: Phenology, pigeon orchid, stigma reseptivity

An experiment of giving mulch of rice straw (Oryza sativa) on weeds and crop production soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr) has been carried out at the Laboratory of Plant Ecology, Andalas University, Padang from June to September 2013. The purpose of this study was to determine and define how mulch of rice straw suppress weed growth and increase the production of soybeans. This experiment used a Completely Randomized Design with five treatments and five replications. The result showed that rice straw mulching of 300g/10kg can suppressed the growth of weeds, and rice straw mulching of 500g/10kg could increase soybean production. All treatments showed significantly influence on the increase weight of soybeans product. Keyword: mulch, rice straw, soybean, weed

Ploidization of Mystacoleucus padangensis Bleeker, 1852 (Pisces: Cyprinid) with heat shock induction has been carried out from January to September 2014 at Genetics and Cytology Laboratory, Biology Department of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University. This study aimed to find suitable temperature for ploidizatiom on M. padangensis. The study used Completely Randomized Design method with five treatments and five replications. The treatments were various water temperatures (i.e. 27oC as control, 36oC, 38oC, 40oC, and 42oC). The results showed that triploid individuals were found in all treatments but not control. Keywords: ploidization, Mystacoleucus padangensis, heat shoc

Wallowing activity is thought to have some important roles in the viability of wild boars (Sus scrofa L.). The characteristics of wallow and wallowing activity can show the ability of the boars to adapt with variety environmental challenges. Study on the characteristics of wallow and wallowing activity of the boars at the Biological Education and Research Forest (HPPB) Andalas University was conducted from September to December 2012 and from April to July 2013. This study was conducted by observing the characters of five wallows, while wallowing activities at two different wallows were observed by using camera traps. The results showed that wallows were found mainly rounded in shape, located near by habitual animal path with shadowed by dense canopy. The dominant substrate of wallows is particles of gravel and coarse sand. The rubbing trees were found around the wallows. From a total 197 observation days, we found 53 video and 51 photos which indicated the wallowing activities within 26 different visiting times. Those activities occurred in the morning between 6:00 am to 09:00 am, with the temperature around the wallows was 25ⰠC. Activities performed while wallowing is rolling, standing, resting and rooting. The result of this study may suggest that wallowing activity has more important function than thermoregulation as previously suggested. Keywords:  wild boar, characteristics wallow, wallowing activity, thermoregulation

A study on the structure ofbird communities in three types of habitatsat Andalas University, Padang, has been carried out from November 2012 to February 2013. This study aimed to determine the structure of bird communities in those habitats. We used mist-net to catch understory birds. We succesfully caught 72 individuals which belong to24 species, 20 genera, 12 families and 3 orders, including four species of  migratory birds. The highest abundance was found in the secondary forest, and the lowest was in herbaceous dominated vegetation. The diversity indiceswere generally moderate (H’= 1,897 – 2,466)Keywords: bird community, habitat type, mist-nettin

Research on the “Effect of acidification of coconut water and rice washing water as an composting alternative of growth medium for gray oyster mushroom (Pleurotus Sajor Caju (Fries) Singer)†was conducted from February to March 2014 in Microbiology Research Laboratory, Biology Departement, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Andalas University. The research aimed to determine the acidity level that can be used as an alternative for the composting of growth medium of gray oyster mushroom as well as the effect of addition of coconut water and rice washing water for the misellium growth. Adjusting pH of coconut water and rice water showed different effects to the growth myselium and the production medium (baglog). Completely Random Design (CDR) with factorial pattern is the method that used in this research. Acidification of coconut water and rice water with pH 3, pH 4 and normal pH have different effect. The fastest growth of mycelium obtained from coconut water with pH 4 liming treatment (9 days).Key Words : acidification, coconut water, rice washing water, Pleurotus sajor caju, composting alternativ

Murashige-Skoog media enriched using 6-Benzyl Aminopurine (BAP) and sucrose was conducted from June 2013 to February 2014 at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology, Department of Biology, Andalas University. This study aimed to determine the ability of shoot formation of white turmeric (Curcuma zedaoria Roscoe) on the effect of BAP and sucrose concentration. We used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 8 treatments and 3 replications, BAP (0, 1.5, 3 and 4.5 mg/L) and sucrose (3 and 5%) of MS medium. The result showed that the percentage of shoot induction was 100%. The best combination of sucrose and BAP in shoot induction was obtained on 5% sucrose and 1.5 mg/L BAP. While for the first immerge of shoot was obtained on 5% sucrose and 4.5 mg/L BAP in 5 days after inoculation. All treatments but did not give any significant effect to the number and height of shoots.Key words: Curcuma zedoaria, shoot, sucrose and 6-Benzyl Aminopurin
