    Obesity and gut–microbiota–brain axis: A narrative review

    Introduction: Obesity is a major health problem that is associated with many physiological and mental disorders, such as diabetes, stroke, and depression. Gut microbiota has been affirmed to interact with various organs, including the brain. Intestinal microbiota and their metabolites might target the brain directly via vagal stimulation or indirectly through immune-neuroendocrine mechanisms, and they can regulate metabolism, adiposity, homoeostasis and energy balance, and central appetite and food reward signaling, which together have crucial roles in obesity. Studies support the concept of bidirectional signaling within the gut–brain axis (GBA) in the pathophysiology of obesity, mediated by metabolic, endocrine, neural, and immune system mechanisms. Materials and methods: Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases were searched to find relevant studies. Results: The gut–brain axis (GBA), a bidirectional connection between the gut microbiota and brain, influences physiological function and behavior through three different pathways. Neural pathway mainly consists of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and vagus nerve. Endocrine pathway, however, affects the neuroendocrine system of the brain, particularly the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and immunological pathway. Several alterations in the gut microbiome can lead to obesity, by modulating metabolic pathways and eating behaviors of the host through GBA. Therefore, novel therapies targeting the gut microbiome, i.e., fecal microbiota transplantation and supplementation with probiotics and prebiotics, can be a potential treatment for obesity. Conclusion: This study corroborates the effect of gut microbiome on physiological function and body weight. The results show that the gut microbiota is becoming a target for new antiobesity therapies. © 2022 The Authors. Journal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis published by Wiley Periodicals LLC

    The effect of probiotics on gestational diabetes and its complications in pregnant mother and newborn: A systematic review and meta-analysis during 2010–2020

    This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotics consumption on gestational diabetes (GD) and its complications in pregnant mother and newborn. The study was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021243409) and all the enrolled articles were collected from four databases (Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar) as randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from 2010 to 2020. A total of 4865 study participants from 28 selected studies were included in this review. The present meta-analysis showed that the consumption of probiotics supplementation has the potential to decrease GD-predisposing metabolic parameters such as blood glucose level, lipid profile, inflammation, and oxidative markers which may reduce GD occurrence among pregnant women. © 2022 The Authors.     Impacts of an educational program on rural women's knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF)

    Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an important zoonotic disease that can cause severe complications in human, especially among residents of rural areas. In this experimental study, 80 rural women were selected in Iran, by multi-stage cluster sampling method and randomly assigned into two intervention (n = 40) and control (n = 40) groups. A CCHF prevention education program was developed and implemented for the intervention group. Data were collected in both pretest and posttest groups (3 months after intervention), using a researcher-made questionnaire to measure knowledge, attitudes and practices effective in the prevention of CCHF. The data were analyzed in SPSS-27 software test at a significance level of 0.05. The mean age of participants was 32.5 +/- 7.76 year. Based on the pretest results, the average knowledge (P = .001) and attitude (P = .001) in the control group was significantly higher than those of the intervention group, but the difference was not significant for the practice (P = .210). After 3 months of follow-up, the mean of knowledge, attitude and practice in the intervention group increased significantly, compared to that of the control group (P = .001). Educational interventions can improve the rural women's preventive behaviors toward CCHF. It is suggested to design and implement similar extensive educational interventions to empower rural women's first, and then whole society

    An updated systematic review on the maternal exposure to environmental pesticides and invoved mechanisms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) progression risk in children

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) increased dramatically over the past 25 years because of genetic and environmental factors. This systematic review (SR) aimed to determine the association between maternal exposure during pregnancy to environmental pesticides and other associations with the risk of ASD progression in children. PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus (Elsevier) and the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science were searched using appropriate keywords up to March 2021. Twenty-four studies met the inclusion/exclusion criteria and were selected. Most studies reported that ASD increases the risk of offspring after prenatal exposure to environmental pesticides in pregnant mother's residences, against offspring of women from the same region without this exposure. The main potential mechanisms inducing ASD progressions are ROS and prostaglandin E2 synthesis, AChE inhibition, voltage-gated sodium channel disruption, and GABA inhibition. According to the included studies, the highest rates of ASD diagnosis increased relative to organophosphates, and the application of the most common pesticides near residences might enhance the prevalence of ASD

    Promising effects of parasite-derived compounds on tumor regression: a systematic review of in vitro and in vivo studies

    The parasites are repeatedly confronting their host to take advantage of nutrients for multiplication and survival. In this sense, a wide spectrum of molecules is released from both sides, with immune-regulatory activity, accompanying this biological battle. Such parasites and their valuable molecules can be directed toward microbial-based cancer therapy. Herein, we contrived a systematic review to gather information on the antitumor activity of parasite-derived compounds. Following systematic search in Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest and Embase until 31 December 2019, a total number of 51 articles (54 datasets) were finally included in this review. Thirteen parasitic agents were found to possess possible antitumor activity, comprising protozoan species Toxoplasma gondii, Trypanosoma cruzi, Trichomonas vaginalis, Acanthamoeba castellanii, Besnoitia jellisoni, Leishmania major, Plasmodium yoelii, and Plasmodium lophurae, as well as parasitic helminths Toxocara canis, Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia crassiceps, Trichinella spiralis, and Schistosoma mansoni. Most experiments were done based on antigenic preparations from T. gondii (16 studies), E. granulosus (10 studies), T. spiralis (8 studies), and T. cruzi (6 studies). Possible antitumor properties of the selected parasites were revealed in this review. However, precise molecular basis of anticancer activity for each parasite remains to be elucidated in the future

    Desire thinking as an underlying mechanism in alcohol use disorder and nicotine dependence

    Desire thinking is an emerging construct in the addictive behaviours literature. No research, to date, has investigated its contribution to problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence in patient samples when accounting for established predictors of addictive behaviours. The present study sought to clarify, in patient samples, the relative contribution of desire thinking in the associations between negative affect, impulsivity and thought suppression on the one hand and craving, problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence on the other. To achieve this goal, two groups of individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) (n = 370; age range = 15-67 years) and nicotine dependence (n = 365; age range = 17-75 years) were selected, and measures of negative affect, impulsivity, thought suppression, craving, desire thinking, problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence were completed by both groups. Results showed that in both groups, negative affect and thought suppression indirectly affected alcohol and nicotine craving, problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence through the mediating role of desire thinking. The present study shows the independent role of desire thinking in predicting problematic alcohol use and nicotine dependence in patient samples, indicating its potential relevance for treatment

    A universal problem is about spread of Staphylococcus aureus infections in burn patients. The present study aimed to learn about the molecular characteristics and the resistance pattern of S. aureus strains isolated from burn patients. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated 100 unique S. aureus isolated from burn patients by antimicrobial activity and biofilm formation and evaluated the effect of Complex Pyobacteriophage, a commercial bacteriophage cocktail, against the isolates mentioned above. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) comprised 76, and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) comprised 24 of 100 S. aureus strains. The resistance rate among MRSA isolates was higher than compared of MSSA. Mupirocin resistance was found in 30 of isolates, with 28 (93.3) and 2 (6.7) strains of MRSA and MSSA, respectively, found. Vancomycin intermediate resistance in S. aureus (VISA) was 13 of MRSA strains. Two isolates were confirmed as vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) strains and carried vanA. 31 and 62 of the total isolates showed inducible and constitutive resistance phenotypes. The rate of inducible and constitutive clindamycin resistance among MRSA strains was higher than MSSA strains. Biofilm production was detected in 66 of isolates. Strong, moderate, and weak producers accounted for 25, 17, and 24 of isolates. Phage analysis showed that 81 were susceptible to the phage cocktail, and only 19 were resistant to the phage cocktail. Our data indicated that VISA strains prevalence in the burn unit was mainly from S. aureus infections. Present work recommended that vancomycin treatment be closely monitored to prevent the spread of VISA and VRSA strains. Observations also highlighted the role of bacteriophage cocktails in eradicating S. aureus-related infections

    Using Artificial Intelligence for Predicting the Duration of Emergency Evacuation During Hospital Fire

    Objective: A danger threatening hospitals is fire. The most important action following a fire is to urgently evacuate the hospital during the shortest time possible. The aim of this study was to predict the duration of emergency evacuation following hospital fire using machine-learning algorithms. Methods: In this study, the real emergency evacuation duration of 190 patients admitted to a hospital was predicted in a simulation based on the following 8 factors: the number of hospital floors, patient preparation and transfer time, distance to the safe location, as well as patient's weight, age, sex, and movement capability. To design and validate the model, we used statistical models of machine learning, including Support Vector Machines Random Forest, Naive Bayes Classifier, and Artificial Neural Network. Results: Data analysis showed that based on the Area Under the Curve, precision, and sensitivity values of 99.5, 92.4, and 92.1, respectively, the Random Forest model showed a better performance compared to other models for predicting the duration of hospital emergency evacuation during fire. Conclusion: Predicting evacuation duration can provide managers with accurate information and true analyses of these events. Therefore, health policy makers and managers can promote preparedness and responsiveness during fire by predicting evacuation duration and developing appropriate plans using machine learning models
