Plausible uncertainties for human pose regression
Human pose estimation (HPE) is integral to scene understanding in numerous safety-critical domains involving human-machine interaction, such as autonomous driving or semi-automated work environments. Avoiding costly mistakes is synonymous with anticipating failure in model predictions, which necessitates meta-judgments on the accuracy of the applied models. Here, we propose a straightforward human pose regression framework to examine the behavior of two established methods for simultaneous aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty estimation: maximum a-posteriori (MAP) estimation with Monte-Carlo variational inference and deep evidential regression (DER). First, we evaluate both approaches on the quality of their predicted variances and whether these truly capture the expected model error. The initial assessment indicates that both methods exhibit the overconfidence issue common in deep probabilistic models. This observation motivates our implementation of an additional recalibration step to extract reliable confidence intervals. We then take a closer look at deep evidential regression, which, to our knowledge, is applied comprehensively for the first time to the HPE problem. Experimental results indicate that DER behaves as expected in challenging and adverse conditions commonly occurring in HPE and that the predicted uncertainties match their purported aleatoric and epistemic sources. Notably, DER achieves smooth uncertainty estimates without the need for a costly sampling step, making it an attractive candidate for uncertainty estimation on resource-limited platforms
Marine biodegradation of natural potential carrier substrates for seagrass restoration
Seagrass meadows provide essential ecosystem services but have been strongly declining over the past. Due to their incapability to recover effectively naturally, assisted restoration is used. This study aimed to test textile fabrics from natural derivatives to serve as carrier substrates for seagrass transplantation. The use of biotextile fabrics should enable seagrasses to better withstand hydrodynamic forces, especially in high‐energy areas and during autumn and winter storms in the initial phase of restoration, thereby increasing restoration success. Here, the biodegradation behavior of three natural textiles was assessed in different configurations. Coir, sisal, and jute meshes were fixed on the top and bottom of a coir nonwoven mat, forming a so‐called “sandwich structure.” Specimens were buried in the Ria Formosa Lagoon, Portugal, and retrieved weekly within the first months of burial and subsequently monthly over a total period of 3 months. Weight, tensile strength, and oxygen consumption rate were used as descriptors for biodegradation and tested after each retrieval. The results obtained in this study were discussed in the context of the application of the tested materials on Zostera marina transplants. Due to experimental errors, these results are solely used for discussion purposes in a conservative manner. Based on the three descriptors, coir mesh was the least degraded by the end of the experiment. Yet, it is vital to analyze the microbiome in a study site to understand the biodegradation process and based on that select a textile material. Coir fibers appear to be a good choice in highly biologically active areas to prolong the degradation process, whereas in areas with less activity sisal could be sufficient and even beneficial through the release of compounds that foster vegetations induced by degradation
In situ monitoring of the curing of highly filled epoxy molding compounds: the influence of reaction type and silica content on cure kinetic models
Monitoring of molding processes is one of the most challenging future tasks in polymer processing. In this work, the in situ monitoring of the curing behavior of highly filled EMCs (silica filler content ranging from 73 to 83 wt%) and the effect of filler load on curing kinetics are investigated. Kinetic modelling using the Friedman approach was applied using real-time process data obtained from in situ DEA measurements, and these online kinetic models were compared with curing analysis data obtained from offline DSC measurements. For an autocatalytic fast-reacting material to be processed above the glass transition temperature Tg and for an autocatalytic slow-reacting material to be processed below Tg, time–temperature–transformation (TTT) diagrams were generated to investigate the reaction behavior regarding Tg progression. Incorporating a material containing a lower silica filler content of 10 wt% enabled analysis of the effects of filler content on sensor sensitivity and curing kinetics. Lower silica particle content (and a larger fraction of organic resin, respectively) favored reaction kinetics, resulting in a faster reaction towards Tg1. Kinetic analysis using DEA and DSC facilitated the development of highly accurate prediction models using the Friedman model-free approach. Lower silica particle content resulted in enhanced sensitivity of the analytical method, leading, in turn, to more precise prediction models for the degree of cure

Arbeitsvorgänge in Bibliotheken : 2.
