Cross-Chain Smart Contract Invocations: a systematic multi-vocal literature review

    No full text
The introduction of smart contracts has expanded the applicability of blockchains to many domains beyond finance and cryptocurrencies. Moreover, different blockchain technologies have evolved that target special requirements. As a result, in practice, often a combination of different blockchain systems is required to achieve an overall goal. However, due to the heterogeneity of blockchain protocols, the execution of distributed business transactions that span several blockchains leads to multiple interoperability and integration challenges. Therefore, in this article, we examine the domain of Cross-Chain Smart Contract Invocations (CCSCIs), which are distributed transactions that involve the invocation of smart contracts hosted on two or more blockchain systems. We conduct a systematic multi-vocal literature review to get an overview of the available CCSCI approaches. We select 20 formal literature studies and 13 high-quality gray literature studies, extract data from them, and analyze it to derive the CCSCI Classification Framework. With the help of the framework, we group the approaches into two categories and eight subcategories. The approaches differ in multiple characteristics, e.g., the mechanisms they follow, and the capabilities and transaction processing semantics they offer. Our analysis indicates that all approaches suffer from obstacles that complicate real-world adoption, such as the low support for handling heterogeneity and the need for trusted third parties

A single stage dual active half-bridge single phase solid-state transformer with wide input-range

    No full text
This article proposes a single-phase solid-state transformer with a wide input range. The converter is based on a direct ac/ac dual-active half-bridge topology utilizing four-quadrant switches. A two-mode control concept, combining a phase-shift modulation with a new variable dead time modulation, is proposed to control the output voltage over a varying input voltage and load range. Due to the presented variable dead time modulation concept, the step-down capability can be expanded. Combining the control principle with the topology leads to a very low-complexity system design. The converter structure and operating principle are described and analyzed in detail. Simulation results and measurements on a 600 W prototype, using SiC cascode FETs switching at 250 kHz, with an ac input voltage varying from 120 V to 400 V, verify the proposed concept

Human adipose tissue secretes hundreds of regulatory active hormones involved in developing and manifesting severe diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular disorders. To improve the predictive power of in vitro models and mimic the complexity of native adipose tissue more closely, three-dimensional (3D) in vivo near adipose tissue models are urgently needed. This work aimed to construct and evaluate different 3D adipose tissue models with and without artificial matrix and compare them with the native state to build a flexible and physiological model. For this purpose, lobules from human primary adipose tissue in different size ranges were isolated, cultured, and signs of cell death or lipolysis were determined. Lobules weighing 27 – 70 mg were found to provide the most stable results over 15 days and were thus investigated more deeply. Analysis of viability and cell function in terms of lipid accumulation and expression of perilipin A proved that lobules were an adequate adipose tissue model. A further model without an artificial matrix were spheroids from human adipose-derived primary stem cells (ASC). The spheroids were adipogenically differentiated for 14 days, and meanwhile, the change in volume and roundness, as well as the expression of cell death markers and the adipogenic differentiation potential, were observed. Here, spheroids with more than 100,000 cells decreased their volume over time and showed apoptosis and necrosis markers at days 0 and 14. Spheroids up to 100,000 cells slightly increased their volume during differentiation. Spheroids from 10,000 cells accumulated the most lipids, expressed perilipin A and collagen Ⅵ. Thus, ASC-derived spheroids from 10,000 cells were identified as another adipose tissue model with high potential. Subsequently, gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) was established as a biomaterial for the encapsulation of primary ASCs and mature adipocytes (ACs), followed by extrusion-based 3D bioprinting. It was shown that the homogeneous distribution of lipid-filled ACs into an aqueous bioink solution was only possible by rapid cooling down to ice. Subsequent 3D bioprinting had no significant effect on cell viability, functionality, or adipogenic differentiation. The bioprinting process had no negative effects on cell death as the live-dead staining on day 1, day 8, or 15, respectively, demonstrated. Staining for intracellular lipids and perilipin A, as well as glycerol release as a marker of functionality, confirmed this. Compared with native tissue, differentiated ASCs (diffASC) also showed significantly fewer lipid-positive cells and released glycerol at day 15. Morphologically, ACs in GelMA also have more similarities to native tissue than diffASCs. Due to the limited long-term stability of GelMA, its origin, and crosslinking, biomaterials without animal origin were evaluated. The low-acetylated polysaccharide gellan gum (GG) proved to be a promising material. Stable and transparent hydrogels could be constructed by crosslinking with divalent ions in cell culture medium. The 1 % hydrogels were not cytotoxic or activated monocytes in indirect or direct assays. It was confirmed by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, resazurin turnover, and live-dead staining. Acellular gels could be cultured for 98 days without significant changes and showed material properties suitable for adipose tissue. Because of this long-term stability, diffASCs could be cultured in GG for 98 days and mature into univacuolar adipocytes. This was demonstrated by staining intracellular lipids and perilipin A, as well as leptin secretion and glycerol release. Compared with native tissue, diffASCs had comparable, albeit smaller, morphology, similar proportions of lipid-positive and univacuolar cells. Based on GG, ACs were successfully encapsulated and assembled. Here, a GG concentration of 0.5% proved suitable, as homogeneously mixed hydrogels with high resazurin turnover and glycerol release were gained. For the additive setup of the GG-based models, optimization to bioink took place, enabled by the initial addition of divalent ions to increase viscosity and, thus, printability. The additively manufactured models showed no significant differences in viability or functionality. After 42 days in culture, univacuolar and functional cells were shown. By increasing the GG concentration to 1.5%, a successful 6D bioprinting procedure was established. Again, ASCs encapsulated in GG showed no viability, morphology, or differentiation differences after bioprinting. Finally, the adipogenesis of ASC-based models and adipocyte-specific phenotype were considered. No differences were found concerning viability. The adipogenic differentiation potential was most prominent in diffASC hydrogels. Both here and in the spheroids, stored lipids could be detected without medium induction. Consideration of the adipocyte-specific morphology of the matured models allowed the conclusion that the cells in the monolayers showed the most immature state in the form of multivacuolar, elongated diffASCs with actin stress fibers. The cells in the other models showed significantly larger lipid vacuoles with a roundish cytoskeleton. Quantitatively determined lipid, leptin, and glycerol levels suggest that the cells, except those in the monolayer, are in a steady state, supported by the relative gene expression of adipocyte-specific genes. In summary, in this work six different adipose tissue models were developed and evaluated and compared them with native tissue. Each analyzed model has individual strengths, resulting in different scopes of application and research questions. To achieve a in vivo-near model, diffASCs in GG hydrogels are a promising, long-term stable, mature adipose tissue model and can therefore be used as a flexible platform for in vitro testing

Multi-role BPMN models for the automatic generation of collaborative checklists to provide role-specific support in the OR : Proof of concept for computer-assisted cochlea implantations

    Get PDF
The operating room demands well-functioning workflows and optimized communication. Based on the formalization of specific surgical interventions via BPMN, intraoperative checklists can automatically be generated to support the surgical team by the provision of relevant clinical information and situation-dependent assistive functions. While focusing on the surgeon, other actors have not yet been considered. The aim of this work is therefore the extension of the intraoperative checklist to enable role-specific support and improved communication between the actors. The BPMN approach is adapted to depict role-specific surgical steps and clinical information to realize the collaborative, multi-role usage of the checklist. The proof of concept demonstrates the automatic generation of intraoperative checklists which provide relevant information depending on the role. An initial evaluation of the checklist based on the cochlea implantation use case shows promising results

Advanced classifiers and feature reduction for accurate insomnia detection using multimodal dataset

    Get PDF
Sleep deprivation is a significant contributor to various diseases, leading to poor cognitive function, decreased performance, and heart disorders. Insomnia, the most prevalent sleep disorder, requires more effective diagnosis and screening for proper treatment. Actigraphic data and its combination with physiological sensors like electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and body temperature have proven significant in predicting insomnia using machine learning methods. Studies focusing solely on actigraphic data achieved an accuracy of 84%, combining it with other wearable devices increased accuracy to 88%, and 2-channel EEG alone yielded an accuracy of 92%, but limits scalability and practicality in real-world settings. Here we show that using the hybrid approach of incorporating both recursive feature elimination (RFE) and principal component analysis (PCA) on sleep and heart data features yields outstanding results, with the multi-layer perception (MLP) achieving an accuracy of 95.83% and an F1 score of 0.93. The top-ranked features are predominantly sleep-related and time-domain RR interval. The dependent variables in our study have been extracted from the self-report Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire responses. Our findings emphasize the importance of tailoring feature sets and employing appropriate reduction techniques for optimal predictive modeling in sleep-related studies. Our results demonstrate that the ensemble classifiers generalize well on the dataset regardless of the feature count, while other algorithms are hindered by the curse of dimensionality

To invest or not to invest in digital initiatives? An exploratory examination of procedures, evaluation criteria and barriers

    Get PDF
Purpose Due to the disruptive nature of digital transformation, firms can hardly ignore the further digitalisation of processes and business models. Implementing such initiatives triggers enormous investments in infrastructure and software, making the evaluation of digital investments crucial for a firm’s competitive situation. Design/methodology/approach Given the dynamics and uncertainties inherent in digital transformation, a qualitative, inductive research approach based on semi-structured interviews with high-level finance executives has been employed. Findings Our findings indicate widespread dissatisfaction with traditional investment appraisal methods for evaluating digital investments. Data also suggest that non-financial considerations are frequently taken into account, albeit implicitly, as participants struggled to clearly conceptualize these criteria. Originality/value The literature indicates important research gaps regarding the applicability and usage of traditional, predominantly financial, investment appraisal methods in digital contexts. This research enhances our understanding of digital investment evaluation, by (i) developing an exploratory conceptual framework of potential qualitative evaluation criteria and (ii) providing an in-depth and detailed understanding of the barriers to implementing investment appraisal methods

Systematic literature review on the acceptance of human-robot collaboration among assembly workers

    Get PDF
Assembly processes are currently facing a transformation: demands for productivity and flexibility are increasing, and customer requirements for product quality and variety are growing. The introduction of human-robot collaboration (HRC) in industrial workplaces can meet the increasing demand for customized solutions and improve assembly and manufacturing. Workplaces, where humans and robots work closely together at the same time and place, are becoming increasingly popular. Cobots are a suitable solution, especially for small and medium-sized companies that produce many product variants in small batches and therefore need flexible, mobile, and easily programmable devices. HRC has the potential to address current challenges such as aging workforces and shortage of skilled labor in Germany. In order to leverage the individual strengths of humans and robots and create hybrid teams that add value for all stakeholders, employee acceptance is crucial for the successful introduction of HRC in the company. This study investigates the relevant factors influencing the acceptance of human-robot collaboration among assembly workers in manufacturing through a systematic literature review
