Oral History of Thanh Ngoc Nguyen
No full textOral History of Thanh Nguyen, born in 1958 in Hue, Vietnam to a family with 10 children. His family moved from Hue (Central Vietnam) to Saigon a few years after his birth, following his father’s posting by the army. He recalls his school experiences in Saigon, particularly during the late 1960s when the Vietnam War was raging in the country. After the war ended, his father was sent to reeducation camp and he was sent to work hard labor. Because his opportunities were severely limited, he escaped Vietnam by boat in 1982 and passed through refugee camps in Malaysia and the Philippines where he met his wife through writing letters to her. She was an Australian working in refugee camps and her writings moved him. The only met years later in Westminster, California and got married in Australia. They have two children and are settled in Orange County, California, both taking active part in community life. At the time of interview, he is the president of a nonprofit called Social Assistance Program for Vietnam (SAP-VN).Recorded Digitall

No full textOral history of Nathan Thuan Nguyen (Nguyen Anh Thai Thuan), born on August 1, 1971 in Saigon, Vietnam. His family is of the Cao Dai faith and lived in Tay Ninh and then Saigon. They came to the U.S. in 1975 via sponsorship by a Catholic church to Waynesboro, Virginia. Since then he has moved all over, but is living in Los Angeles at the time of interview. No full textOral History of Mr. Nguyen Trong Phat (or PhatTrong Nguyen, western-style) who was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1951. His family moved south in 1954 and followed his father’s work as a bus driver. He spoke about his early days in school and then his career in the Army for seven years. He married his wife in 1973. After the war ended, he was sent to reeducation camp and then imprisoned again in 1977. He spoke at length and in vivid detail about his boat journey from Vietnam to Hong Kong, focusing on the survival strategies of those aboard his boat. After resettlement in the United States, he worked many odd jobs until he started his small business, shipping care packages to Vietnam in the 1980s. This business eventually became one of the most established money transfer and shipping businesses in Orange County, California.Recorded Digitall

His father was part of the Viet Minh and worked in civil service. He was able to study abroad at McGilll University in Canada in the 1972 and acquired his Masters degree in 1976. As an international student, he was already outside the country when the Vietnam War ended. He eventually moved down from Canada and resettled permanently in Orange County, Calfornia where he met and married his wife. They have 6 children. He designed, patented and manufactured avionics parts and established his company, Ameri-King, in Huntington Beach, California.Recorded Digitall

He and his family migrated to South Vietnam in 1954, and spent most of their lives there until the 1970s, when he and his family then migrated out of Vietnam at different times as the war came to an end. He spent a majority of his adulthood in France, where he worked several different jobs before attaining a PhD in law. The interview focused on his education experiences and work experiences in Vietnam, France, and the United States. No full textAn oral history with Dr. Thai Quoc Ha, born in 1962 in Saigon, Vietnam. His parents fled North Vietnam in 1954 to come to the South where his father worked as the head nurse for Hong Bang Hospital in Saigon. He, the youngest in the family, was 13 years old when Saigon fell to the communists, but because one of his brothers was in reeducation camp, they did not leave until 1978. His oldest brother, who was a civil engineer, and some other people built a boat to escape. He and 9 other relatives, including his 2 brothers and 1 sister, left Can Tho in 1978. They were at sea for 2 days and 3 nights before they landed on the shores of Malaysia. He stayed in a refugee camp in Pulau Bidong for 8 months before reuniting with his 2 other siblings in the U.S. He first lived in Fremont, CA, then moved to Richland, WA for high school, then back down to Southern California where he went to undergraduate and medical school at UC Irvine. He is a medical doctor specializing in gastrointestinal. He is the founder of Picture Arts Foundation with a cultural center in Cal State Dominguez Hills and is currently residing in Redondo Beach, California.Recorded Digitall

He attended a few years of school in South Carolina and then his family relocated to Orange County, California where he finished high school and attended college at UC Irvine. He met and married a non-Vietnamese woman and they have three children.
