He grew up with 3 siblings and his interview focused on experiences with the education system in Vietnam as well as the social relations between friends in the 1960s and 1970s in Saigon. His father was sent to reeducation camp in 1975 and as the oldest brother, he had to work to support his family. He tried escaping Vietnam as a boat refugee but failed and then in 1991 his family left through the Humanitarian Operation under the Orderly Departure Program. He was sponsored to Washington state but eventually resettled in San Diego, California. After working in various jobs and attending school, he got a job as an aircraft engineer working for the US Navy.Recorded Digitall
Oral History of Nguyen Dinh Cuong
No full textOral history of Nguyen Dinh Cuong (or Cuong Dinh Nguyen, western-style) who was born in Hanoi in 1942. His family migrated down to Dalat after the Geneva Conference partitioned Vietnam into north and South. Most of his education was attained in Dalat. He became a teacher and met his wife, also a teacher, at a school where he taught. They had a son in 1975 and fled Vietnam by boat in 1977, ending up in a make-shift refugee camp in Taman Muara, Malaysia. They were resettled to Los Angeles County, California where he had a brother already there. He continued his schooling and became a civil engineer, added one more child (daughter) to the family, and settled in Cerritos, California. At the time of interview he is retired and remains active in the Buddhist community as well as alumni associations and on Vietnamese radio.Recorded Digitall
Oral History of An Thi Nguyen (aka Kieu My Duyen)
No full textOral history with An Thi Nguyen, who also goes by the pen name of Kieu My Duyen. She was born in Gia Dinh, Vietnam in 1940 and spent her childhood achieving academically and in ping pong. She began her career as a journalist at a very young age and also studied abroad in Australia through a program known as the Colombo Plan. She travelled extensively in Vietnam, reporting on the war before she left Vietnam in 1976 as a boat person. She resettled in Los Angeles and Orange Counties and continues to be active in the Vietnamese print and radio media. She also serves on many nonprofit boards and owns her business, Ana Real Estate and Funding in Garden Grove, California.Recorded Digitall

Her interview focused on her memories of going to pharmacy school in Saigon, being the eldest in her family and taking care of her mother who suffered from cancer. She left Vietnam by boat with her family and passed through Guam and the Philippines before resettling in Albuquerque, New Mexico through the sponsorship of a Lutheran Church. She met and married her husband, another Vietnamese refugee, in Albuquerque and then they moved to Orange County where she completed her undergraduate degree and medical school at UC Irvine. She has two children. She co-founded the Vietnamese American Cancer Foundation in 2002. At the time of interview she continues to participate actively in community life in Orange County.Recorded Digitall

No full textOral history of Ms. Bui Bich Ha (or Bich-Ha Bui, western-style), a woman born in 1938 in Hue, Vietnam. She spoke in detail about her father, one of the four wealthiest men in Vietnam in the mid-century. The interview also explores her memories of life before the August Revolution of 1945, then the years before 1954, and finally the drastic changes to her family’s fortune after 1954. She became a teacher and radio broadcaster before 1975. Then, after the Vietnam War ended, her children had to join the youth cadres while she continued teaching. Her family left Vietnam via sponsorship in 1985. After resettlement in the US, she worked at various jobs such as assembly-work and eventually moved up in her career in research & development. Meanwhile, she also actively participated in community work, ran a radio program on “women and family,” and served as editor of “Phu Nu Gia Dinh” Magazine. She raised her two daughters in America alone. At the time of interview she is retired from her job and radio program, but continues to serve as editor of Phu Nu Gia Dinh.Recorded Digitall

No full textOral history of Tu-Uyen Nguyen, born in 1972 in Saigon, Vietnam. Her father was part of the 1954 migration from North to South Vietnam where he met and married her mother. She left Vietnam as a boat refugee with her family in 1979 and passed through a refugee camp in Indonesia. Her family initially resettled in Falls Church, Virginia but they relocated to Southern California. She earned her undergraduate degree from UC Irvine, her Masters and Ph.D. in Public Health from UCLA and is currently a professor of Asian American Studies at Cal State Fullerton.
