Oral History of Tuan Anh Nguyen
An oral history with Mr. Tuan Anh Nguyen, born on December 28, 1947 in Nam Dinh, Vietnam. He moved from North Vietnam to the South in Saigon at age 7. He graduated from the University of Saigon in 1970 and became a teacher specializing in Vietnamese literature. He was drafted in 1972 to be an officer in the South Vietnamese armed forces. After the Fall of Saigon, he was imprisoned for three years in the re-education camps. He was released in 1978 and returned to Saigon. He escaped Vietnam by boat in July, 1981 and arrived in America in 1982. He discusses his experience in the re-education camps and his journey on boat. He also talks about his experience in the refugee camps and life in America. After coming to the United States through a sponsor program, he became an electrician for 20 years, and he became actively involved in the Vietnamese-Catholic community. He has served as a chairman in the Vietnamese Cursillo Movement of Los Angeles and the Vietnamese Catholic Community of Norwalk. He retired at age 65 and continues to serve in the religious community. He has 3 children, 2 grandchildren, and lives in Anaheim, California with his wife.Recorded Digitall
Oral History of Long Hoang
An oral history with Long Hoang, born in 1984 in Saigon, Vietnam. He was sponsored to Colombia in 1990 by his uncle and moved to America in 1990. Long resides in Garden Grove. He has worked several different jobs while attending community college. He graduated from Divine Works College. As of this interview, Long is aspiring to become a priest, but was rejected from the divinity program of Divine Works College. Oral History of Anh Dang
An oral history was conducted with Mrs. Anh Dang, born in 1961 in Vinh Long, Vietnam. The interview focused on her childhood in Saigon, her experiences as a student during the Vietnam War and life after the collapse of South Vietnam. She discusses the hardships she endured after 1975, including the imprisonment of both of her parents and the inability to further her education. She also describes her escape by boat and journey through refugee camps in Hong Kong and the Philippines. Oral History of Thanh The Nguyen
An oral history with Mr. Thanh The Nguyen, born in 1932 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Mr. Nguyen was a ARVN officer in South Vietnam and served his country from 1950-1975. After the collapse of South Vietnam, he was sent to a reeducation camp and was released after 10 years. Mr. Nguyen was happy to speak about his time before the war as well as the events in his life after the war and coming to California. He immigrated to California through the Orderly Departure Program - Humanitarian Operation. Previously he worked as a security guard but has been retired for the past 10 years. Mr. Nguyen is a past member of the Armory Regiment who get together annually to honor their fallen brothers-in-arms during the Vietnam War. Oral History of An Do
An oral history with Mr. An Do, born in 1963 in Saigon, Vietnam. He was only 12 years old when the South Vietnam collapsed, but he was able to get into the U.S. Embassy to evacuate. He discussed his memories of how he got to America and how he ended up at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Mr. Do came to America at a young age, so he had a lot of opportunities. He and his father were the only ones who made it and were sponsored by a family in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Do discussed his life in America and how he was not able to contact his family in Vietnam for more than 10 years. He received his Masters degree and became an engineer. He currently works for CalTrans. He is married with two children and lives in Cerritos, California.Recorded Digitall
