    Oral History of Nguyen Ly

    An oral history with Mr. Nguyen Ly, born in 1970 in Saigon, Vietnam. He grew up ethnic Chinese as a son of a tailor and his wife. He was the second son of four children. Growing up, he took drawing classes, and his siblings did other artistic activities as well. He lived in Saigon until he and his family escaped via boat to Malaysia in 1978. He and his family stayed in the camp until an uncle and a church sponsored them. In 1979, he and his family moved to the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. There they stayed until Nguyen graduated high school and went to Cal Poly Pomona where he earned his degree in graphic design. In 1992, Nguyen received his U.S. citizenship and changed his name to Charles. After graduating with his degree from Cal Poly Pomona, Nguyen went to Rome, Italy to paint a fresco with about 40 other artists. Following that he worked at his family’s restaurant. Nguyen entered the master’s program at Cal State Fullerton in printmaking in 1998. There, he started his job at the local library, which he still has to this day. In 2011, he joined the printmaking collective, Los de Abajo and continually competes and creates art with the collective. He is married with no children and currently resides in Whittier, CA.Recorded Digitall

    An oral history with Mr. Steven Nguyen, born in 1961 in Saigon, Vietnam. He was a student in Saigon until leaving Vietnam in 1990. After the fall of Saigon, he came to America via Thailand, to Seattle, and finally California where he took classes while looking for work. Once in California, he first settled in Norwalk, then Westminster, and finally settled in Anaheim until present day. He discussed his memories growing up as a kid in Saigon with brothers and a father who was a high-ranking official in the Army. He also discussed how he left Vietnam through the Orderly Departure Program. Today, he lives happily with his wife and two kids in Anaheim, California as a technician for a printing company.Recorded Digitall

    An oral history with Ms. Loan Thuy Tran, born on August 13, 1972 in Saigon, Vietnam. She discusses her memories in Vietnam as a little girl after the fall of Saigon and how she left in 1978 by boat and stayed at a refugee camp in Bangkok, Thailand. In 1979, through family sponsorship, she came to the United States, roaming from city to city all over Orange County, California. She discusses the hardship of growing up in the United States while being raised in a strict, traditional Vietnamese family and living in a very wealthy, Americanized community. After high school, she worked different jobs to support her family. She has two daughters and a grandchild. Currently, she resides in Garden Grove, CA with her husband and is self-employed with an online business.Recorded Digitall

    An oral history with Mr. Thien Van Nong, born in 1962 in Saigon, Vietnam. His family are descendants from the Nung and Tho ethnic minority tribes in the Lang Son Province of Vietnam. He was thirteen years old when he had to flee Vietnam with his parents and his nine siblings who were based in Saigon because of his eldest brother’s work with the U.S. Army. They left Vietnam on April 28, 1975 from Tan Son Nhut Airport and flew to the Philippines for a brief stay. From the Philippines, they landed in Guam and later found themselves in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Mr. Nong and his family were relocated to Evansville, Indiana later in 1975. He discusses his experiences in Vietnam, his time assimilating into American culture, and his experiences at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT). He would be the first in his family to earn a college degree, receiving a degree in chemical engineering from RHIT. He is married, has two children, and currently resides in Irvine, California with his family.Recorded Digitall
