    Oral History of Trung Duong

    An oral history of Mr. Trung Duong, born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1973. He was only an infant during the Vietnam War; his father was a tugboat captain with the South Vietnamese Army. After the fall of Saigon, his father was sent to a concentration camp where he would spend his next few years with only his mother and sister. When his father was released, Trung and his father escaped Vietnam in 1983 leaving his sister and mother behind. They were on a boat for 6 days and 5 nights before reaching a refugee camp in Malaysia. He stayed in Malaysia for three months before moving to the Philippines to learn English. He then describes how he and his father lived in Virginia for a month before moving to California, where his father found a job working at a print shop. He worked as a paperboy while attending school. After high school, he attended the University of California, Irvine as a biology major from 1991-1994. Mr. Trung Duong currently lives in Irvine, California with his wife and two children.Recorded Digitall

    Oral History of Ngoc My Le

    An oral history with Ms. Ngoc My Le, born in 1957 in Mỹ Tho, Vietnam. She is the oldest child of six children. She was studying to be a dentist from 1975-1979 in South Vietnam. In 1979, she escaped from Vietnam with her two brothers and a male colleague by boat. She stayed for 13 months in two different refugee camps, Ku Ku and Galang, in Indonesia before being sponsored by a church in Poughkeepsie, New York. She moved from San Diego, to New Orleans, to Los Angeles before settling in Orange County, California. Although she initially pursued dentistry and medical technology, she found her passion in nursing and received her diploma in nursing from USC Medical Center School of Nursing. She has been working as a registered nurse at UCLA Medical Center for 20 years. She is a single mother of 4 children and currently resides in Fountain Valley, California.Recorded Digitall

    An oral history with Ms. Kelley Khuu, a Chinese descendant born in 1977 in Cần Thơ, Vietnam. She spent the first ten years of her life as an ordinary child in Vietnam before immigrating to the United States by plane through her grandmother’s sponsorship in 1987. She was captured by the Communist Party when she was two, and that left a mark on her childhood. She couldn’t remember much of her time in Vietnam since she left when she was young. She discusses how life in America was for her and emphasizes the opportunities and freedom that the United States offers its citizens. She earned a college degree in accounting. She lived happily after moving to America and grew up as a Vietnamese American, carrying both cultures and traditions. Now settled with her nuclear family, including her husband and son in Anaheim, California, Kelley would like to preserve the precious traditions for future generations. She took her son to a school run by a Buddhist temple to learn Vietnamese and would like to be a teacher there as her involvement in the community.Recorded Digitall

    Oral History of Tung Dinh

    An oral history with Mr. Tung Dinh who was born in Saigon, Vietnam on November 28, 1961. He was the youngest of three children and spent most of his days in Vietnam either rigorously studying in high school or making numerous attempts to escape from his homeland. After finishing his high school education, he was captured twice for attempting to escape Vietnam and was sentenced to jail for 18 months at a time—serving a total of 3 years of jail time. Upon escaping the jail his last time, he made his way through Cambodia and into Thailand where he, his oldest sister, and his father were sponsored to the United States by his aunt who resided in Cerritos. Since then, he has worked several electrical and mechanical inspection jobs and is very involved at his Buddhist Temple. He is a mechanical/electronics inspector and resides in Westminster, California with his wife and four kids.Recorded Digitall

    Oral History of Van Duong

    An oral history with Ms. Van Duong Do, born on August 25th, 1980 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She moved to the United States when she was 15 years old with her whole family. Her father was a soldier who was imprisoned for three years by the communist government. The US government sponsored families who were Vietnamese veterans of the Vietnam War. Van’s family moved to Southern California in 1985. She discussed the journey of getting used to the life in the U.S. and the hardships of fitting into her neighborhood and school. She also discussed her visits back to Vietnam and how Vietnam has changed compared to when she left for the U.S. She graduated from Cal State Long Beach, which was the time when she met her husband Tin Do in a church group. She is now 35 years old, married to Tin Do, and has a 3-year-old son named Tristan. Currently living in Garden Grove, California, Van works as an analyst at the QBE insurance company.Recorded Digitall

    An oral history with Mr. Hao Nhien Vu, born in 1964 in Saigon, Vietnam. He grew up in Saigon before and during the Vietnam War. Both of his parents were researchers and microbiologists and tried to use their work connections to escape Vietnam after the war, but without success. However, his two brothers were able to escape Saigon in 1975. When the war ended, he was just finishing elementary school and continued onto middle school, but he had to transfer to multiple schools because the new government was shutting down these schools post-1975. He eventually went to Marie Curie High School in Saigon, which was previously an all-girl’s school before 1975. He flew with his parents out of Vietnam with the aid of a sponsor to Bangkok, then to Hong Kong, Japan, Seattle, and finally settling in West Lafayette, Indiana. Mr. Vu attended Purdue University where he graduated with a Masters in Mathematics and eventually obtained a job as an actuary at an insurance company in Indianapolis. He then moved to Los Angeles, California where he worked as an actuary at Allied Insurance. Afterwards, he decided to pursue a law degree at UCLA School of Law. He then became a journalist for Nguoi Viet Daily News and started teaching at various community colleges. He currently teaches math full-time at Coastline Community College and lives with his wife in Fountain Valley, California.Recorded Digitall
