    Oral History of Mimi Luu

    An oral history with Ms. Mimi Luu, born in 1963 in Saigon, Vietnam. She was the youngest of eight children and still a child during the war. At the age of 13, she was imprisoned for a few months after being caught trying to escape Vietnam. She came to the United States in 1983 through a family sponsorship. She discusses her life here in America, lack of education, the differences between her old life and her new life, and the difficulties she has encountered over the years. She discusses her brothers’ escape, while also recalling the loss of family members due to this incident. After coming to America, Ms. Luu worked multiple jobs, was married, divorced, and remarried. She currently works as a sales associate in Rowland Heights, California and lives with her three children and second husband in Rosemead, California.Recorded Digitall

    Oral History of Ken To

    An oral history with Mr. Ken To, born in 1962 in Phan Thiet, Vietnam. He was a student learning Chinese and English from 1966 to 1975. After the collapse of South Vietnam, he failed his first attempt at escaping in 1975 but then managed to successfully escape in 1978 by boat to a refugee camp in Pulau Bidong. He left Pulau Bidong in September 1979 via family sponsorship through his cousins who had settled in California after escaping a year prior by flying from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to California, USA. He discussed his memories of where he was born and how he grew up in Saigon before 1975. He also discussed memories of leaving Vietnam and the struggles he had to overcome during the journey from escaping Vietnam to Pulau Bidong by boat and finally to America via family sponsorship. After coming to the United States, he eventually became a naturalized citizen and took a job as a cashier for most of his life and then became an account executive working at a mortgage company. He lives in Orange, California with his wife and two children.Recorded Digitall

    An oral history with Mr. Ryan Tuan Pham, born in 1965 in Saigon, Vietnam. He was a student during the time of the war and lived in Long An, Vietnam. He has five brothers and five sisters, and he is the eighth child. He comes from a Catholic family. Ryan talks about his childhood memories and memories of 1975. He left Vietnam at the age of 16 with some of his relatives by boat. He was sponsored to the U.S. and continued his education in high school and college. He also took English as a Second Language classes. In his early years in the U.S., he worked in a clothing factory in order to provide for himself. Now he works as a customs broker. Ryan takes part in a Vietnamese traditional culture music club. He has two daughters with his ex-wife. In 2014, he moved to Anaheim and now lives with his current girlfriend.Recorded Digitall

    An oral history with Mr. Minh Duong, born in 1967 in Quang Tri, Vietnam. He lived on a farm with his family until he escaped Vietnam in 1981. He discussed his difficult voyage from Vietnam to the refugee camp in Pulau Bidong, Malaysia. He then discussed how he was sponsored by his uncle to immigrate to America. After coming to Irvine, California, he worked a variety of jobs while also going to school. He worked at a carwash, as a newspaper boy, a factory overseer, and currently a real estate agent. He met his wife in 1991 and married her in 1993 and now lives with her and their three children in Mission Viejo, California.Recorded Digitall

    An oral history with Mr. John Pham, born in 1983 in Biên Hòa, Vietnam. After assisting the US military and placed into refugee camps, his father was sponsored to Montclair, California along with Pham’s nine other siblings from 1970s to 1980s. He and his mother were later sponsored to Montclair, California when he was 10 years old. He discusses the culture clash and language barriers he had going to middle school. He also describes his curiosity for different cultures and emphasizes the importance of understanding his own identity and Vietnamese roots. He earned his B.A. in Philosophy at University of Iowa in 2005. He is currently a social worker for Loma Linda Hospital at Montclair, California. He enjoys playing basketball with his friends and is involved with a Roman Catholic Church in Ontario, California. He currently lives in Montclair, California.Recorded Digitall
