    VERBA TRILITERAL BAHASA ARAB: TINJAUAN DARI PREPEKTIF MORFOLOGI DERIVASI DAN INFLEKSI

                          AbstractAs aglutination language arabic verb is polymorphemic word. Among the Arabic verbs are verbs called basic triliteral verbs. In addition to the root morpheme, three are other morphemes contained in the basic triliteral verbs. This study is to reveal the number and shape of morphemes contained basic triliteral verb. Methode of data collection to gather basic triliteral verb conjugation and listening means. The analys method used is distributional method that realized with the technique opposition, the immediate constituen. The conclution of this research the basic triliteral verbs commpossed by the root morpheme, transffix, affixperson, number, and gender.Keywords: Aglutination, basic triliteral verbs, morpheme, affix.    AbstrakSebagai bahasa bertipe aglutinatif, verba dalam bahasa Arab memiliki bentuk-bentuk inflektif dan derivatif karena verba bahasa Arab merupakan kata polimorfermik. Di antara verba-verba bahasa Arab terdapat verba yang disebut verba dasar triliteral. Selain morfem akar, terdapat morfem-morfem lain yang terdapat pada verba dasar triliteral. Makalah ini mengungkap paradigma persona, jumlah, dan gender pada verba dasar trilateral. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menyimak konjugasi verba dasar triliteral. Metode analisis yang digunakan adalah metode agih dengan teknik bagi unsur langsung dan oposisi. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah verba dasar triliteral tersusun atas morfem akar, transfiks, dan afiks persona, jumlah dan jenis.Kata-kata kunci: Aglutinatif, verba dasar triliteral, morfem, afiks

    AN ANALYSIS OF MODALITY IN STUDENTS’ HORTATORY EXPOSITION TEXTS (SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR PERSPECTIVE)

    AbstractThis study deals with the interpersonal meaning revealed the use of modality system in students’ hortatory exposition text at one of universities in Ciamis. Five texts of students’ hortatory exposition were analyzed to find out what types of modality are used and what interpersonal meaning which is contained through modality system. This study employed Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) based on Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2004) framework since it can seek and identify the level of language structured which makes kinds of meaning.The findings showed that all of clauses which contained modality system indicated author’s interpersonal meaning with different value of language in the texts. The different types of language value and polarity also indicated the author’s interpersonal meaning in the texts. In addition, this analysis concluded that five texts comparised several modalization and modulation types which appeared with different ranks. Lima teks eksposisi hortatory mahasiswa dianalisis untuk mengetahui apa jenis modalitas yang digunakan dan apa makna interpersonal yang terkandung melalui sistem modalitas. Penelitian ini menggunakan Grammar Fungsional Sistemik (SFG) berdasarkan kerangka Halliday dan Matthiessen (2004) karena kerangka tersebut dapat mengidentifikasi tingkat bahasa terstruktur yang membuat berbagai jenis makna. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa semua klausa yang berisi sistem modalitas mengandung makna interpersonal penulis dengan nilai bahasa dalam teks yang berbeda. Berbagai jenis nilai bahasa dan polaritas juga menunjukkan makna interpersonal penulis dalam teks. Selain itu, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa kelima teks memiliki beberapa tipe modalization dan modulasi yang muncul dengan peringkat yang berlainan.Kata kunci: Hortatory exposition text, makna interpersonal, modalitas, SFG

    PENERAPAN TEKNIK MEMBACA TOP DOWN UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN MEMBACA SISWA KELAS IX DI SMPN 2 JATINANGOR

    Abstrak Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Tujuan dari pelaksanaan penelitian ini adalah untuk (1) mengkaji keefektifan pembelajaran dalam peningkatan hasil belajar siswa, ketercapaian ketuntasan belajar dan kegairahan siswa dalam proses pembelajaran; (2) menelaah respon siswa terhadap pembelajaran membaca top down (MTD). Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas IX D SMP Negeri 2 Jatinangor Kabupaten Sumedang. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah rencana pembelajaran, tes hasil belajar, lembar penilaian siswa, lembar observasi dan lembar angket. Penelitian dilakukan melalui dua siklus, setiap siklus terdiri dari 4 kegiatan utama, yaitu perencanaan, tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Pelaksanaan pembelajaran diobservasi oleh tiga pengamat (observer). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan hasil belajar siswa didasarkan pada perolehan nilainya. Begitu pula dari segi ketuntasan belajar menunjukkan peningkatan dari nilai rata-rata 77,65 menjadi 80,24. Ditinjau dari aktivitas siswa selama mengikuti pembelajaran, hasil angket, dan komentar dari para observer, dapat disimpulkan bahwa respon siswa positif, siswa merasa lebih tertantang dan dapat hal-hal baru dalam pembelajaran membaca top down.Kata-kata kunci : Membaca top down, pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia, PTK                                                 AbstractThis research was classroom action research (CAR). The purpose of this study was to (1) examine the effectiveness of learning in improving outcomes students’ learning, the achievement of mastery learning and enthusiasm of students in the learning process; (2) examine the students’ respon in learning  to read top down. The Subject of  this study was the students of class IX D SMP Negeri 2 Jatinangor Sumedang District. Instruments used were lesson plans, test results of learning, student assessment sheet, observation and questionnaire sheet. The study was done in two cycles, each consisting of 4 main event, namely planning, action, obsevation, and reflection. Implementation of learning observed by three observers. Research results seen from the result of tests of students in each cycle and there appears to be an increase in learning outcomes significantly. Similarly, increasing mastery learning of the avarage value of 77.65 into 80.24. Judging from the students during the learning activity, the results of the questionnaire, and the comments of the observer. It can be concluded that the positive students’ respone, students feel more challenged and new learning to read by using  Top Down Reading (TDR) technique.Keywords : Top-down reading, Indonesian language learning, CA

    Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has been accepted as one of the teaching methods by numerous language teachers due to its major focus on developing learners’ communicative competence. This paper aims to describe communicative language teaching, misinterpretations about its practice and the factors leading to teachers’ misconceptions. It shows four misinterpreted beliefs of the implementation of communicative language teaching: communicative skills, teacher’s role in communicative activities, fluency and accuracy as the main goals and teaching techniques.     TRAVEL WRITING: AN APPLICATION OF WRITING WORKSHOP TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’S CREATIVE WRITING

    Writing is often assumed as uneasy skill to either learn or teach. For students, they find it difficult to develop ideas in writing. On the other hand, teachers, many of them, only ready with the materials but confuse with the appropriate ways to teach. This paper intends to describe and discuss a method of teaching writing namely writing workshop to improve students’ writing skill through travel writing. Writing workshop proposed by Calkins that consists of mini lesson, work time, peer conferring and/or response groups, share sessions, and publication celebration is applied in writing class for methodological purposes. In mini lesson, teacher offers something to the class that is meant to introduce a writing strategy done at the beginning of the workshop. During work time point, students start their new piece of writing. Teacher moves among students conferring with them while checking their works. Peer conferences or response groups provide a forum for students to talk about works in progress. When students work in group, one of them could arrange his/ her group needs during the work time. A share session may be varied, one possible way is each group shares their process of writing to other students. At the end of writing class, student writers come together to publish and/ or celebrate their final work. The publication could be in the form of portfolio, students’ diary, blog, or others. Travel writing genre is chosen as it could develop students’ creativity in describing/ narrating their own stories during, let say holiday or things they used to see on the way home weekly or monthly. Furthermore, travel writing as the product of creative writing teaches the readers of values, characteristics, and way of life.     The scientific approach (observing, questioning, associating, experimenting and networking) employed in the 2013 curriculum requires students to not only master, experiment and create concepts but also to communicate results of analysis, findings or products to other students/parties. Indonesian teaching, therefore, is oriented not only for mastery of grammatical competence but also sociolinguistic, discourse ad strategic competences. To acquire such competences, an appropriate teaching strategy is called for. One such strategy is the so-called the language learning strategy, which refers to specific actions carried out by students to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more independent, more effective and more directed towards new situations.     EVALUATION OF A HOTEL MANAGEMENT TEXTBOOK BASED ON WORLD LANGUAGE STANDARDS

    The aim of this study is to evaluate, using world language standards 2007,                  a textbook on hotel management and tourism for intermediate to advanced level students. The respondents of this study were two groups: experts and students. The experts include English lecturers at hotel department and  hotel supervisors. The students include hotel and tourism students. The respondent come from 5 (five) higher tourism colleges. The study utilized the questionnaire developed on World Language Standards 2007, consisting of fifty three indicators that follow: content, exercises, communication, cultures, connections, communities and general elements. A continuous scoring procedure was used in which 1 was for the minimum and 4 was the maximum score. The results revealed these points: Of the ten indicators of general elements the highest score from the students the rated score reached 3.17 points of 4. Of the eleven content indicators of the experts the rated score reached 3.37 points and the score reached 3.36 points for the seven indicators of the exercise. The score of the communication consisting of eleven indicators reached 3.23 points, and of the six indicators of cultures the scored reached at 3.52 points. The next is the score of the connection consisting of three indicators reached at 3.63 points, the communities consisting of five indicators the score reached at 3.68 points and the last is general elements consisting of ten indicators the rated score reached 3.36 points.  The findings showed that the score of the all variables were above three meaning that it is considered good. However, the textbook still needed improving if it will be published as a course book as it was suggested by the students and the experts

    INDONESIAN TERTIARY STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE USE OF LOCAL CULTURE VS TARGET CULTURE READING MATERIALS IN ENGLISH READING CLASS

    This paper aims at portraying Indonesian tertiary students’ attitudes towards the use of local and target culture reading texts in English reading classes with regard to today’s role of English. It has been widely recognized that today’s role of English is as an international language (EIL) and as a lingua franca (ELF). Regarding this international role of English language, ideally teaching and learning English should be matched with appropriate pedagogical approach, in this case, EIL pedagogy approaches. In other words, teaching and learning EIL should be different from teaching and learning of any other second or foreign languages. Since Indonesia is categorized as an EFL country, it is interesting to find out whether this issue has an impact on ELT practices such as English reading class in this country. The subjects of the study are first year English Education Department students. The data were gained by delivering Likert scale questionnaire to the students on their attitude towards the reading materials given to them in one semester. In addition to this, an interview was conducted to verify the data and gain further information. The findings revealed that in general they show positive attitude to both local culture and target culture reading materials, with the majority of them prefer reading target culture reading materials. Furthermore, a considerable number of the students also acknowledge the importance of the use international culture along with English language teaching

    This article revolves around the issues of feminism in a novel. Issues of feminism are interesting to analyze because they have been leading issues in many societies. There are two problems addressed, namely what issues of feminism are and how the main character reacts to her condition in the novel. Marxist and feminism theories are used to analyze the position of the main character. Results indicate the girl’s tiresome yet fruitless struggle against the patriarchal oppressions in her unequal marriage and there is no victory for a woman except she is willing to leave her life behind.     REPRESENTASI RONGGENG DALAM TIGA NOVEL INDONESIA

    This paper is based on the phenomenon of dancer or “tayub” which is celebrated as a very popular cultural artifact in public life, particularly in Java. This tradition is originally part of a sacred ritual, which ultimately became a performing art, but tends to be viewed negatively. In a historical context, the dancer was originally seen based on cultural concept and evolves into culturally sacred profane. Negative reception of ronggeng is not only uttered orally but also embodied in the written tradition. It is found in the genre of literary fiction such as in Trilogy Ronggeng Dukuh  Paruk written Ahmad Tohari (2003), Ronggeng works Dewi Lingga Sari (2007), and Karti Kledek Ngrajek by S.W. Warsito (2009) . The results of this study illustrate that the figure of dancer who is represented in Indonesian fiction are various. Although there are similarities, but the authors tend to have different reception levels regarding “ronggeng”. “Ronggeng” as cultural artifacts is the manifestation of the ability of local communities to respond and adapt to the environment actively. Similarly, what is represented in fiction about “ronggeng” is a mirror of the society where the work was born
