Habitat fragmentation is a key issue in both population and conservation biology. Isolated patches resulting from habitat fragmentation are often surrounded by matrices with different permeabilities that can restrict dispersal and affect space use patterns. Decreased of matrix permeability is often change individual’s behavior, including emigration attempts and altered space use. Isolated populations suffer from the effects of genetic drift and show both low genetic diversity and high genetic differentiation compared to neighboring populations. This PhD thesis significantly expanded the knowledge of the habitat selection, genetic structure, and space use patterns of stone marten (Martes foina) —widespread medium-sized solitary carnivore associated with human inhabitation. The aim of this thesis was to (1) examine habitat selection of stone marten to identify potential environmental barriers created by various matrix types, (2) analyze the genetic structure of stone marten in Poland to quantify the levels of permeability of matrix types, and (3) compare space use patterns in sites with different degrees of isolation. To achieve these goals, analyses were carried out on two levels: (1) the whole of Poland, where an analysis of the genetic diversity and structure of stone marten was conducted; (2) two sites in north-eastern Poland with different matrix permeabilities (highly-isolated and less-isolated site). Analysis of habitat selection of stone marten showed that it strongly prefer developed areas (villages) over meadows and forests. Stone marten typically utilize small patches with tree regeneration, open wetlands, and river valleys in similar proportions with respect to their availability in the landscape. Avoidance of large forest complexes by stone marten is probably related to thermal stress and/or high predation pressure. High availability of developed areas with low isolation degrees contributes to the weak genetic structure of stone marten across large areas in Poland and is mostly a factor of isolation by distance. Genetic structure of stone marten in Poland revealed two to four population clusters with high levels of admixture among sites and low probability of assignment (except for highly-isolated site). However, the genetic uniqueness of marten inhabiting particular sites increased with larger proportions of forests in surrounding sites. Our hypothesis that a large forest complex constitutes environmental barriers restricting gene flow was confirmed through genetic analyses, which demonstrate the high genetic differentiation of a single population from Białowieża Primeval Forest. Moreover, these genetic analyses show that a densely forested area in north-eastern Poland was colonized 20-30 years ago.¬ As a consequence of high isolation by forest complex, stone marten adopted two strategies of home range use – stationary and roaming. Stationary individuals used some of the smallest home ranges in Europe. On the contrary, roaming individuals had a 7-fold larger home range size, moved farther between independent locations than stationary individuals, and often switched between strategies. The two space use strategies and low home range fidelity led to low stability of the spacing pattern in the highly isolated site. Marten did not differ in body mass, survival, and sex ration in sites with varying levels of isolation by unfavorable matrix. To conclude, this PhD thesis reveal that habitat patches surrounded by matrices which influence genetic structure and population ecology in fragmented landscapes. Isolation by matrix may restrict gene flow, ultimately shaping genetic structure and changing an animal’s behavior. Wykorzystuje ona niewielkie płaty odnowień leśnych, otwarte tereny podmokłe i doliny rzek proporcjonalnie do powierzchni zajmowanej przez te środowiska w otaczającym krajobrazie. Stosunkowo duże zagęszczenie i niski stopień izolacji obszarów zabudowanych w Polsce powodują brak wyraźnej struktury genetycznej w polskiej populacji kuny domowej, a stwierdzone zróżnicowanie genetyczne wynika głównie z izolacji przez dystans. Z kolei osobniki nomadyczne, w porównaniu do stacjonarnych, użytkowały nawet siedmiokrotnie większe areały i odbywały dłuższe dobowe wędrówki.

Jak wspomniano powyżej, podczas oddziaływania światła o odpowiedniej energii z nanocząstkami plazmonicznymi następuje wzbudzenie plazmonów powierzchniowych i wzmocnienie natężenia pola elektrycznego w pobliżu nanostruktur plazmonicznych. Chroni ona nanocząstki przed aglomeracją i strącaniem z roztworu, a dodatkowo uniemożliwia bezpośrednie oddziaływanie badanej substancji z powierzchnią metalu plazmonicznego. Można więc powiedzieć, że zastosowanie nanocząstek plazmonicznych pokrytych warstwą krzemionki umożliwia bardziej wiarygodne analizowanie struktury powierzchni różnego rodzaju obiektów biologicznych w warunkach in situ. W trakcie prowadzonych badań zostały z powodzeniem wytworzone dwa rodzaje nowych anizotropowych nanocząstek plazmonicznych do pomiarów typu SHINERS: dziesięciościany Ag@SiO2 oraz bipiramidy Au@SiO2. Sprzężenie właściwości plazmonicznych nanocząstek metalicznych z silnymi właściwościami magnetycznymi nanocząstek z tlenków żelaza znacznie zwiększa użyteczność takich nanokompozytów jako materiałów do wytwarzania podłóż do pomiarów SERS. Według mojej wiedzy dotychczas otrzymane nanokompozyty magnetyczno-plazmoniczne zawierały albo kuliste nanocząstki plazmoniczne albo kilka rodzajów nanocząstek anizotropowych o słabo zdefiniowanej (i niepowtarzalnej) strukturze. Wytworzenie nowego typu nanorezonatorów do pomiarów SERS z zastosowaniem nanocząstek plazmonicznych o wielu ostrych krawędziach i wierzchołkach powinno w dużym stopniu poprawić efektywność takich nanorezonatorów umożliwiając uzyskiwanie widm SERS o większym stosunku sygnału do szumu. One of the most important features of nanoparticles from 11 group metals are their optical properties. Gold and silver nanoparticles exhibit very intensive and various colors due to the excitation of surface plasmon resonance. Surface plasmon resonance can be understood as the collective oscillation of conductive electrons near nanoparticle’s surface under irradiation. Excitation of the electron plasma oscillation leads to very high enhancement of the electric field in the close proximity of irradiated plasmonic nanoparticle. The direct outcome of the electric field enhancement is increasing efficiency of various optical phenomena, such as Raman scattering, for molecules in the close proximity of irradiated metallic nanostructures. Consequently, plasmonic nanoparticles are used as nanoresonators in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). SERS is a modification of classical Raman spectroscopy that due to its very high sensitivity and specificity finds many analytical applications in fields ranging from biochemistry to fine art conservation. As described, the interaction of an electromagnetic wave with plasmonic nanoparticles leads to the excitation of surface plasmon resonance and to the electric field enhancement in the close proximity of nanoparticles’ surface. It has to be underlined that the intensity of the electric field is not spatially homogenous. There are so called “hot-spots” where the intensity of electric field is especially high. Such places are localized on the sharp edges and apexes of anisotropic nanopartciles or in narrow slits between them. As a result, in case of anisotropic nanoparticles with many sharp edges and apexes, the enhanced electric field is strikingly higher than in case of spherical nanostructures. Therefore, usage of anisotropic nanoparticles in SERS spectroscopy highly augments the intensity of obtained spectra allowing measurements of studied molecules in lower concentrations or with lower Raman cross-section. My PhD project was focused on the synthesis of new types of anisotropic nanoresonators and their application in Raman spectroscopy measurements. During my research I was working on two types of nanomaterials comprised of plasmonic nanoparticles with many sharp edges and apexes: plasmonic nanoparticles covered with thin silica layer and bifunctional magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposites containing plasmonic nanoparticles with various shape. The first type of obtained nanostructures were used in SHINERS spectroscopy (shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy). In SHINERS method plasmonic nanoparticles covered with very thin layer of inert oxide (mainly SiO2) are used as nanoresonators, increasing the intensity of Raman signal. The shell oxide layer prevents the aggregation of the plasmonic nanoparticles and keeps them from direct contact with studied molecules. Chemical interaction between metal surface and studied molecules can cause irreversible structural changes (for example, denaturation of proteins), which of course distorts Raman signal of analyzed molecules. Therefore, using plasmonic nanoparticles covered with silica layer allows more reliable studies of biological objects in situ. During my research, I synthesized two types of new anisotropic nanoparticles for SHINERS measurements: decahedral Ag@SiO2 and bipyramids Au@SiO2. Obtained nanostructures were used in Raman studies of Saccharomyces Boulardi cells and for detection of thiram pesticide deposited on a surface of tomato fruit. Moreover, Raman studies showed that usage of synthesized plasmonic nanoparticles with many sharp edges and apexes, instead of spherical nanostructures, enhances the sensitivity and selectivity of this method. The second type of nanostructures that I was working on were bifunctional plasmonicmagnetic nanocomposites. Combining plasmonic properties of metal nanostructures with magnetic properties of iron oxides significantly increase the utility of plasmonic-magnetic nanocomposites in a synthesis of SERS-active surfaces. For instance, such nanoconglomerates could be easily and evenly deposited on the analyzed surface using external magnetic field. Therefore, such approach should ease the quantitative studies using Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, after conducting SERS measurements one can easily remove used nanocomposite from examined surface by putting a magnet near the sample. As far as I know, up to now, all obtained nanocomposites contained either spherical plasmonic nanoparticles or few types of anisotropic nanoparticles had poorly defined (and non-repetitive) structure. Synthesis of the new type of SERS nanoresonators using plasmonic nanoparticles with many sharp edges and apexes should highly increase the efficiency of these nanoresonators by obtaining SERS spectra with higher signal-to-noise ratio. During my research I obtained magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposites containing various plasmonic nanoparticles such as: silver decahedrons, silver cubes and hollow gold nanoparticles. Synthesis of magnetic-plasmonic nanocomposites was conducted by binding plasmonic and magnetic nanostructures using a linker molecule (3- aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane). Synthesized bifunctional nanocomposites were successfully used in a preparation of plasmonic surfaces with highly homogeneous spatial distribution of nanostructures. Because of the high homogeneity, these surfaces allow to carry out Raman measurements with very low intensity variability of Raman spectra of examined molecules

One of the most interesting and at the same time complex problems of modern physics is to determine how does the past and the future of our Universe look like. Especially, we are interested in the first moments of its history as they are beyond our experimental reach at present but they influence later stages of the evolution of the Universe we are able to observe. Generally accepted cosmological scenario starts with the Big Bang, we speculate that theUniverse was homogeneous and isotropic with very high temperature and pressure at the beginning, after which our Universe starts to gradually cool down and expand ending up as the Universe we live in. We assume that very early in the evolution of the Universe the process of exponential expansion occurred which we call inflation. During this period density fluctuations were amplified giving the origin to the seeds that would form all the large scalestructure in the Universe – stars, galaxies etc. After inflation we distinguish two periods important for the presented research – preheating and reheating, during which out of the inflaton – the field that drives inflation, elementary particles that fill the Universe now were produced. The thesis describes the processes of cosmological particle production in the timedependent theories and it focuses on three main subjects: gravitational reheating with an instant period of particle creation, multi-stages non-perturbative production in both adiabatic approximation and interacting theory. All of them are based on the fact that the vacuum state changes in time and that in the parameter space there exist a region where particle production is energetically favourable and efficient enough to be observed. In the chapter concerning gravitational reheating particles are produced solely due to the change in the evolution of the observed Universe in time, which is described by the scale factor that depends on time. In our research we assume this kind of particle production right after the end of inflation in a very general way. From our analysis we can draw generic conclusions about available observables involving the features of inflation, observed spectrum of gravitational waves and even characteristics of dark matter or dark energy. The main part of the thesis concentrates on the general description of the multiphase non-perturbative production of particles, especially in case of inflation. The essence of my research in this matter lies in the fact that production of particles can repeat itself until it is energetically possible and the previous stage can affect the next one. We investigate the role of the masses of particles and values of couplings in various scenarios motivated by the usual cosmological considerations with and without supersymmetry. In addition, we focus on the role of light states in the theory proving that in general even massless states not coupled to inflaton can be efficiently produced due to effects of quantum physics and also that additional light sector present in the theory can quench the production after inflation completely due to backreaction. Badamy rolę mas cząstek i wartości sprzężeń w rożnych scenariuszach motywowanych standardowymi rozważaniami kosmologicznymiz uwzględnieniem i bez supersymetrii.

The aim of this work is to transfer the theory of Wolf Wolfensberger's Social Role Valorisation into the educational reality, and thus to verify the new possibility of supporting the process of social integration in the field of education. Author believes that the answer to the question whether such a possibility exists provides new tools for teachers and specialists working with the child and its family

Youth unemployment is one of the fundamental problems on the Polish labour market, and therefore a focus of researchers’ attention, as well as of the activity of social policy entities’ responsible for tackling unemployment at the national, regional and local level. From its beginning in the transition period, but also after the accession of Poland to the European Union, unemployment was characterised by a relatively high proportion of young people in the structure. In the following PHD thesis, the focus was on the reasons for the unemployment rate among young people up to 30 years of age and forms of counteracting it, using the example of the Lubelskie voivodeship. The topic of reasons for youth unemployment has long been attracting theoreticians public policies, but also from the very beginning has yielded negative effects in the sphere of economic and social cohesion in modern economy. Unemployment among the Polish youth and its dynamics presented in this paper is inscribed in the wider public policy context. This thesis also presents the theoretical and methodological aspects of public policy sciences, reflections on the research perspectives taking into account the socio-economic conditions, institutional solutions and attitudes and actions undertaken by young people on the regional and local labour market in order to overcome barriers in starting their first work. Presented also are the 2014 reform of the labour market. The thesis consists of an introduction, five chapters and conclusion. The aim of this study is to analyse the barriers in professional start of the youth and the effectiveness of the measures taken to overcome them. On the basis of the analyses carried out, the research hypotheses assuming that institutional support within the scope of the instruments and conditions of professional activation aiming at reducing unemployment by removing the barriers that prevent young people from finding their first job must take into account not only the situation on the regional and local labour market resulting from the economic and social situation of the region, the activity and scope of assistance offered by labour offices and other institutions, but also the individual attitudes of youth

Praca ta poświęcona została zagadnieniu modalności deontycznej w tekstach prawa pierwotnego Unii Europejskiej sporządzonych w języku polskim i języku hiszpańskim. Pozwoliło to dostrzec różnice w stosowanych aparatach pojęciowych nauk prawnych i językoznawstwa. The thesis is devoted to deontic modality in Polish and Spanish texts of primary law of the European Union. It therefore constitutes an attempt to partly describe a recent phenomenon, constituted by the emergence of the legal language of the European Union. The specific issue addressed is how it expresses rights and obligations. The approach adopted is interdisciplinary and combines methodologies of both linguistics and legal sciences. However, priority is given to methods developed within linguistics. The main objectives of the thesis are (i) to present a linguistic and partly legal analyses of how texts of primary law of the European Union drawn up in Polish and Spanish express different modalities; and (ii) to perform a comparative analysis of the abovementioned texts from the point of view of their mutual modal-deontic identity. The dissertation is divided into three parts, which are devoted respectively to legal text (part I), modality (part II) and presenting means of expressing deontic modality in texts of primary law of the European Union (part III). The first two parts are therefore theoretical, while the last one combines both theoretical and analytical aspects. The first part of the work discusses such issues as the concept of a legal text, the process of its creation and interpretation, the concept of a legal provision and a legal norm, the language of legal texts and sources of primary law of the European Union. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the issue of modality. Basic approaches to modality in logic, legal sciences and linguistics are presented here. In the chapter on linguistic approaches to modality both the types of modality and their grammatical and lexical exponents relevant to Polish and Spanish are discussed. The results of theoretical considerations are subsequently employed in part three, and used to further refine the research methodology. In particular it is argued that, among linguistic theories of modality presented, that of John Lyons results the most suited to adequately analyze deontic modality of legal provisions. The third part and the most important part of the dissertation consists of six chapters. It presents the theoretical framework created for the purposes of this study as well as the results of the analysis of the material consisting of the Treaty on European Union, the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, all drawn up in Polish and Spanish. The applied framework has allowed to capture ways, specific to the legal language, of implementing particular parameters that make up the deontic structures, such as the addressee, the functor and the deed. These parameters constitute basic elements of both deontic utterance and of legal norm. On the other hand, the application of jurisprudence framework to the material at hand have played a crucial role in identifying expressions that are modal functors in legal language, but not so in common language. This result argues against limiting the procedure of identifying modal markings in UE primary law to linguistic analysis alone. A comparative analysis of the examined texts of primary law of the European Union based on the premise of their mutual modal-deontic identity allowed to demonstrate a considerable variation in the ways of implementing entire deontic structures in both languages. Thus the thesis brings arguments supporting the claim that the interpretation of UE primary laws needs to rely on several methods of law interpretation

Trzeci rozdział pracy dotyczy powieści Węże i róże. Debiutancką powieść autora Mateusza Bigdy omawiam w kontekście gatunku powieści rozwojowej; w tym wypadku stanowi ona obraz dojrzewania Józefa Dema do pozytywistycznej figury self-made mana. The doctoral thesis entitled “The Practice of Telling a Family in the Polish Literature of the First Decades of the Twentieth Century on the Example of Works by Zofia Nałkowska and Juliusz Kaden-Bandrowski” investigates the ways in which the experience of “being part of a family” is narrated in the literature of Polish modernism, taking as an example the fictional works of the mentioned authors. The first, preliminary chapter of the thesis explains the idea behind the chosen topic, interpreted authors and works, as well as the adopted methodology. The issue of justifying the methodological framework is of special importance here, as the thesis employs interdisciplinary tools (in particular psychological and psychotherapeutic) in order to conduct critical analysis of literature. In addition to traditional methods adopted by literary scholars, the thesis involves the use of categories belonging to the systemic family therapy approach. To achieve such a purpose, the author first reviews the fundamental psychotherapeutic theories in the context of literary theory, to show the reciprocal inspiration between the two (for example, in terms of such notions as “the death of the author,” dialogue and/or narrative) and to justify the interdisciplinary approach adopted in his analyses. In terms of the methodological framework, the author also defines the notion of “practice,” a central category for the thesis. The second chapter of the thesis focuses on the early novels of Zofia Nałkowska. As part of the chapter, the novels Women, Peers and Narcyza are analyzed. In the interpretation of the first two works, attention is paid to the close link between the early autobiographical and fictional writing of the author, using the category of “narrative identity” taken from narrative psychology. In the chapter, the specific function of the early works of Nałkowska is pointed out, characterized by the processing of similar themes in her prose and memoirs. Autobiographical undertakings of the writer, it is argued, translate into “playing out” various scenarios in her stories in terms of the woman's functioning in the modern era, which enables Nałkowska to create a coherent personality, based on a multi-voice narrative. The analysis of Narcyza, perhaps her most important novel before the First World War, has a different interpretational framework. The basic research question posed in the chapter, “why Narcyza was narcissistic,” may initially seem unfortunate. However, investigating this issue from the perspective of relationships in the Oleśnicki family, allows to draw interesting interpretative conclusions. It turns out that both the father and mother of Narcyza are a deeply suggestive example of the modern crises of femininity and masculinity. In addition, Narcyza’s father, by forbidding her to marry Cwałoszyński, exercises a form of mental oppression on his daughter. Strikingly, the “oppressive father” turns out to be a f and, perhaps, this category should be put in the context of the author’s biography and her personal experiences. Narcyza’s parents do not fulfill their parental duties in any way, dooming the woman to complete loneliness. Psychopathology defines narcissism as a deep disruption of affection bonds in early childhood, which, in the later years, makes it impossible for an individual to create mature relationships with other people. In this context, the narcissism of the protagonist is much more than just an artistic pose, linked to the modernist aesthetics, because it is the main reason behind her tragic biography; the figure of the “New Woman” in the book emerges as just another narcissistic mask. As part of the third chapter of the thesis, the Snakes and Roses novel is interpreted. In this forgotten work, Nałkowska tells the tragic story of Marusia Orychowa, the mother of an intellectually disabled child. It turns out that the maladjustment of the protagonist results from her inability to participate in social games, which involves the adoption of various female roles and the use of flowery, artistic language to describe the liquid, precarious reality of the modern day. The personal trauma of Marusia, however, remains “unspoken” – it becomes her inner burden, impossible even to express. The closest family turns out to be an “anti-role model” – a critical mother-in-law and an aggressive husband, doctor Orych, contribute to the terrible fate of Marusia and Muma. What is more, in the context of the eugenic theories popular at the time, Mumia’s disease becomes a horrific necessity, the result of her mother’s madness and father’s promiscuity (his lectures on the hygiene of married life sound extremely hypocritical in that context). The destruction of the family, so vividly described in Snakes and Roses, is brought to the extreme in The Impatient, a novel published in the late thirties. The work is analyzed within a psychoanalytic framework, which is a closing part of the third chapter. The fourth chapter of the work examines The Lubber (Niezguła) by Juliusz KadenBandrowski. The novel is interpreted in the context of the development novel genre; in this perspective, the work depicts the maturation process of Józef Dem, leading to becoming the positivist figure of self-made man. Dem, however, turns out to be a hero of the crisis era, a weak man who is not capable of meeting the social requirements of modernity. Also, The Lubber is “a story about the nervous world” – an idealistic, somewhat naive protagonist is looking for the patterns of family life abroad, but it turns out that the whole reality of private life is false, destructive and utterly degenerate. The last interpreted work in the thesis is The Bow, a novel about the civilian experience of the First World War by Kaden-Bandrowski. The writer’s seeming awareness in terms of changes to the family life model in the modern era, do not translate into the portrayal of gender roles in his fictional works. The woman’s emancipation, put forward in Kaden’s political commentaries and in the novel through the story of the protagonist, Maryśka Miechowska, remains a façade. In the work, the woman’s existence does not become independent, but is still organized by male fantasies about a patriotic, faithful Penelope or, on the other hand, a liberated femme fatale. From a psychotherapeutic perspective, it can be argued that Miechowska is confronted with “paradoxical communication,” which at the same time requires her to liberate herself and remain faithful, to be free and to give up freedom. The inability to carry out these commands ultimately leads to the fall of the protagonist. Civil families in The Bow also use various, ineffective ways of dealing with the wartime reality, which can be compared with the strategies described by systemic therapy. The protagonists either avoid confronting the problem (the Karowski family along with hiding the boy’ adolescence and his patriotic desires), take unnecessary action (Zatorska, by creating the romantic myth of her husband and failing to face the challenge of lonely motherhood) or solve the issue at the wrong level (Janina, by “liberating” through men, not through her own female power). The interpretation of The Bow is complemented by reflections on the civil masculinity of Karowski, Smolarski and Ciąglewicz. Kaden turns out to be extremely conservative in terms of his depiction of masculinity – in The Bow, in a number of ways, he discredits men-civilians, clearly indicating that the man’s place during the war is on the frontline. The thesis is supplemented by brief conclusions, a part in which the thesis’ author distinguishes four discursive practices (the story of the lack, the story of desire, the story of the crisis, the story of self-destruction) that emerge from the analysis of Nałkowska’s and Kaden-Bandrowski’s works, and which constitute the ways in which family is narrated in the era of modernity

The Concept of Intention in Contemporary Analytical Philosophy of Action

W rozprawie dokonuję rekonstrukcji i krytycznej analizy redukcjonistycznych / antyredukcjonistycznych koncepcji intencji, wypracowanych na gruncie analitycznej filozofii działania. Przedstawiam również własną deontyczną koncepcję intencji. Część pierwsza rozprawy (Rozdziały 1–4) poświęcona została szczegółowej analizie krytycznej pragnieniowo-przekonaniowego modelu intencji (D. Davidson, M. Beardsley, R. Audi, W. Davis), teorii czystych zamierzeń i intencji jako sądów bezwarunkowych (D. Davidson), przekonaniowej teorii intencji (J.D. Velleman, K. Setiya) oraz antyredukcjonistycznej koncepcji intencji jako praktycznych zobowiązań do działania (M. Bratman). W Rozdziale 1 dokonuję krytycznej analizy redukcjonistycznej teorii Donalda Davidsona, w myśl której intencje towarzyszące intencjonalnym działaniom są redukowalne do par pragnienie-przekonanie. Przeprowadzam rekonstrukcję pragnieniowo-przekonaniowych ujęć intencji prospektywnych, czyli zamiarów podjęcia działań w przyszłości (M. Beardsley, R. Audi, W. Davis). Omawiam wybrane zarzuty wymierzone w scharakteryzowane redukcjonistyczne koncepcje intencji. Dokonuję charakterystyki relacji intencji do pragnień i przekonań w kontekście deliberacji praktycznej. In my dissertation I reconstruct and critically analyze reductionist and antireductionist accounts of intention. I also defend my own deontic account of intention. Part I of the dissertation (Chapters 1-4) is devoted to a detailed critical analysis of the desire-belief account of intention (D. Davidson, M. Beardsley, R. Audi, W. Davis), the theory of pure intending and intention-as-unconditional judgement view (D. Davidson), cognitivism about intention (J.D. Velleman, K. Setiya), and the antireductionist theory of intentions as practical commitments (M. Bratman). Chapter 1 is a critical analysis of the reductionist theory of Donald Davidson (1963), according to which intentions accompanying intentional actions (intentions-with-which-some-acts) are reducible to desirebelief pairs. I also reconstructthe desire-belief accounts of prospective intentions (M. Beardsley, R. Audi, W. Davis). I discuss selected objections against the reconstructed reductionist accounts of intention. Chapter 2 is devoted to a critical analysis of the later account of Donald Davidson (1978), according to which intentions construed as evaluative unconditional judgments cannot be identified with beliefs or desires (understood as conditional / prima facieevaluative judgments). I argue that intentions cannot be reduced to any kinds of beliefs or evaluative judgments. In Chapter 3, Iargue against the cognitive theory of intention, according to which intentions are self-referring and self-fulfilling beliefs (D.J. Velleman) or desire-like beliefs (K. Setiya). I argue in particular, that the accounts have two problems. First, it is hard to distinguish intentions from wishful thinking. Second, it is impossible to intend to undertake actions which are difficult and highly prone to failure. In Chapter 4, I argue against Michael Bratman’s (1987) strictly antireductionist theory of intention, according to which intentions are considered to be sui generis mental states, which are elements of complex plans of a rational agent. I criticize his account of rationality requirements, the construal of the relation between intentions and attempts (endeavors), and his account of guiding desires. I argue that the sources of weakness of this account lie in his attempt to combine functionalist and normative intuitions concerning the nature of particular mental states. In Part II, I propose my account of intention. In Chapter 5, I argue that intentions are not reducible to desires. I argue against the motivational, hedonist and evaluative conception of desires (of the doxastic and non-doxastic kinds). I show how, on all these theories, intentions are distinct from desires. In Chapter 6, I argue for a non-doxastic and attitudinal version of an axiological conception of desire. Desires are to be understood as evaluative attitudes towards some content. In Chapter 7, I present a deontic account of intention according to which intentions are deontic attitudes towards some content. I discuss the similarities and differences between my view and the imperative accounts of intentions (H.- N. Castañeda) and the optative / deontic accounts of desires (N. Roughley, F. Lauria). The last three chapters of the dissertation are devoted to showing the direct and indirect consequences of the deontic theory of intentions I offer and to presenting its numerous advantages. In Chapter 8, I discuss the implications of my account for Bratman’s concept of guiding desires. Since guiding desires turn out to be intentions, some problems of Bratman’s theory are avoided. I further argue that the deontic theory of intentions allows to give an adequate conceptualization of the relation of intentions to tryings (attempts). In Chapter 9, I argue for an evidentialist model of the relation between intentions and beliefs. While beliefs are different from intentions, intentions constitute evidence for beliefs. I argue that the deontic conception of intentions supplemented with the evidentialist account solves the problems of the cognitiveaccounts of intention. In Chapter 10,I show that intentions (deontic attitudes) may be understood as dispositions to act, while desires (evaluative attitudes) – as dispositions to intend to act. I characterize the relation of intentions to desires and beliefs in the context of practical deliberation. I show that the deontic model of intention accords with the nondoxastic account of practical deliberation, according to which the goal of such deliberation is to undertake an intention and not to acquire a belief. I justify the claim that in the process of practical deliberation, that is in the process of changing the evaluative attitude into the deontic attitude towards some content, the key role is played by beliefs. In the Summary of Part II, I show that the antireductionist deontic conception of intention meets the desiderata presented in the Introduction to Part II and it is thereby capable of resisting the objections raised by the proponents of the reductionist accounts

Obliczanie optimów i równowag w dynamicznych problemach związanych z eksploatacją zasobów

Exploitation or extraction of common-property renewable resources is one of the biggest challenges in society. It encompasses a wide range of various problems among other things, the phenomenon known as the tragedy of the commons. Most importantly, the extraction and consumption of common natural renewable resources have a strong impact on the quality of life and well-being of both, the current and future generations. From the mathematical point of view, the only tool to deal with the whole spectrum of phenomena arising in such types of problems, in which there are at least two independent decision makers in a common resource extraction problem, are dynamic games, since both dynamic optimization methods and static games encompass only fractions of aspects of those problems. In the dissertation, we propose several models of dynamic games and dynamic optimisation problems, modelling the exploitation of common renewable resources by taking into account various aspects of the problem: • Many players in commons. Increasing number of players regarded as decomposition of the decision making structures. To be more specific, if we consider the same mass of individuals, decomposed into units of decreasing size: from consumers, through North and South, actual countries, regions etc. and finally actual decision makers. • Relation between the Nash equilibria and the social optima and ways of solving the tragedy of the commons by Pigovian taxation or a tax-subsidy system. • Taking into account information: feedback form, closed loop, delayed information. • Self-enforcing environmental agreements with a delay in observation of defection. • Completing and correcting previous results in this research field or finding counterexamples to common beliefs and methodological simplifications. In dynamic games, the strategy of a player is a function which defines his/her behaviour at each time instant in the time interval considered in the game. Therefore, calculation of both, the social optima and the Nash equilibria requires solving the dynamic optimisation problems. However, finding a Nash equilibrium in dynamic games requires solving a set of dynamic optimisation problems, coupled by finding a fixed point of the resulting best response correspondence in some functional space of the profiles of strategies. Due to this coupling, the problem becomes much more complicated than the analogous dynamic optimisation problems. There are quite a few results in nonzero-sum dynamic games, and if the constraints appear (which is natural in real life problems, especially resource extraction problems), then the results are very rare. Therefore, unexpected behaviour of the solution may appear (irregularity, discontinuity, the nonexistence of equilibria of a certain type, existence of many equilibria, lack of convergence). So, we try to fill in the gaps in the simplifications of dynamic games. The dissertation also contains counterexamples to some methods and hypotheses that are regarded as correct and used to solve dynamic games. With the strong motivation behind the chosen problems, in Chapter 1, we introduce the game and some preliminary knowledge of game theory, brief literature review and the mathematical optimisation tools that are used to solve the game models in the dissertation. In Chapter 2, we present a discrete time, infinite horizon, a linear-quadratic dynamic game model with many players and with linear state-dependent constraints on decisions of players. In this model, players can be regarded as countries or firms. There are either finitely many players or a continuum of players. The model has an obvious application in a common fishery extraction problem where the players sell their catch at a common market. We solve the social optimum problem for n-players and for the continuum of players. When it comes to the Nash equilibrium problem, we are only able to solve it for the continuum of players case. For n-players case, we are not able to calculate it for n ≥ 2, only negative results can be proven: that the Nash equilibrium strategies and the value functions are not of assumed regularity with respect to the state variable and showing that presence of even a very simple and obvious constraints on strategies may result in a very complicated form of the value functions and the Nash equilibria. While looking for Nash equilibria, the social optima, we have also found a very simple counterexample to the correctness of a procedure often used in dynamic game theory literature. We also calculate the enforcement of a social optimum profile by various type of Pigouvian tax or a tax-subsidy system, both for n-players and for the continuum of players. Non-existence of a symmetric feedback Nash equilibrium of assumed regularity in the linear-quadratic problem considered in Chapter 2 seems to be inherited from the finite time horizon truncations of the game, so in Chapter 3, we solve a feedback Nash equilibrium problem in a very simple 2-stage, 2-player linear-quadratic dynamic game being a truncation of the model which was studied in Chapter 2 with the infinite time horizon. As a result, we found that the presence of simple linear state-dependent constraints results in the nonexistence of a continuous symmetric feedback Nash equilibria, whereas the existence of the continuum of discontinuous symmetric feedback Nash equilibria. Our result is counter-intuitive to the common belief in the continuity of Nash equilibria for linear-quadratic dynamic games with concave payoffs. While previous two Chapters deal with the specific value of the discount factor β, given by the so called golden rule, in Chapter 4, we solve the social optimum problem from Chapter 2 for more general class of linear-quadratic dynamic games with only one player, called social planner and for more general β instead of the golden rule β. So, we consider a discrete time linear-quadratic dynamic optimisation problem with linear state-dependent constraints. We solve the problem in the infinite time horizon and its finite horizon truncations. Although it seems simple in its linear-quadratic form, calculation of the optimal control is nontrivial. In Chapter 5, we study a general class of dynamic optimization problems. We derive general rules stating what kind of errors in calculation or computation of the value function does not lead to errors in calculation or computation of optimal control. This general result concerns not only errors resulting from using the numerical methods but also errors resulting from some preliminary assumptions related to constraints on the value functions. The results are illustrated by a motivating example of discrete time Fish Wars model, proposed by Levhari and Mirman, with singularities in payoffs. In Chapter 6, we study a continuous time version of the Fish Wars model with the infinite time horizon, linear state equation and state-dependent linear constraints on controls. We calculate the social optimum and a Nash equilibrium which always leads to the depletion of the resource even if the social optimum results in its sustainability. We propose two ways of solving the problems of enforcing social optimality: either by a tax-subsidy system or by an environmental agreement even if we assume that it takes time to detect any defection of a player. We also propose a general algorithm for finding the financial incentives enforcing the socially optimal profile in a large class of differential games
