Ports are gateways for aquatic invasions. New arrivals from maritime traffic and disturbed environmental conditions can promote the settlement of exotic species. Molluscs fall into the most prevalent group of invasive species and can have a tremendous impact on aquatic ecosystems. Here we have investigated exotic molluscs in three ports with different intensities of maritime traffic in the Cantabrian Sea. DNA barcodes were employed to identify the species using BLASTn and BOLD IDS assignment. Deep morphological analysis using diagnostic criteria confirmed BLAST species assignation based on COI and 16S rRNA genes. Results confirmed the usefulness of DNA barcoding for detecting exotic species that are visually similar to native species. Three exotic bivalves were identified: Ostrea stentina (dwarf oyster), the highly invasive Crassostrea gigas (Pacific oyster) and Xenostrobus securis (pygmy mussel). This is the first record of O. stentina in the Bay of Biscay and the second of X. securis in the Cantabrian Sea. Furthermore, we report on the presence of the cryptogenic mussel Mytilaster minimus in the central Cantabrian Sea. These exotic species might have been overlooked due to their phenotypic similarity with co-occurring oyster and mussel species. This study illustrates how combining morphological and DNA taxonomic analysis can help in port and marina biosecurity surveys

Trabajo Fin de EstudiosBeethoven's figure occupies a privileged place in the history of music and, specifically, in the world of piano. A thorough study of his writing, instruments that had at its disposal and technology that redefined and established as a starting point for the modern pianism, has led us to the time of preparing the pedagogical analysis of the sonata op. 28 "Pastoral". In addition, we have completed this pedagogical proposal with a formal and aesthetic analysis of the work, three views that make up a complete and solid interpretive approach.

The lipodystrophy is one of the most frequent complications that may have insulin-dependent diabetics, being a relevant pathology because its presence causes erratic absorption of injected insulin. The objectives of this work are to determine whether the prevalence of lipodystrophy is more common in a body area than another, determine what type of lipodystrophy are more frequent, assess the extent known injection technique, to determine whether there is a relationship between time carrying inject insulin and the number of injections a day with the appearance of lipodystrophy., to know if the patient received education on the injection technique at any time since diagnosis, determine whether the prevalence varies depending on the level of education, age and sex. Methodology: A descriptive observational study of prevalence. literature review was conducted in PubMed, Cuiden, Scielo data, with subsequent review and interpretation of data reading. Results and conclusions: The presence of lipodystrophy was 40.4%, of which 98% were lipohipertrofias, and 2% lipoatrophies Lipodystrophy, may cause a deterioration in glycemic control and increased insulin daily needs, up to 50% the required dose. The prevalence of lipodystrophy, a figure is considered important enough to be considered from the nursing primary care. We stress the importance of providing health education to prevent the occurrence of lipodystrophy, making emphasis on proper injection technique, informing about the risks of needle reuse and auto body scan area where insulin is administered.

Plant-derived smoke and temperature effects on seed germination of five Helianthemum (Cistaceae)

This is a pre-copyedited, author-produced PDF of an article accepted for publication in Aquatic Botany following peer review. The version of record (Martínez-Baniela, M., Carlón, L., Díaz, T. E., Bueno, Á., & Fernández-Pascual, E. (2016). Plant-derived smoke and temperature effects on seed germination of five Helianthemum (Cistaceae). Flora-Morphology, Distribution, Functional Ecology of Plants, 223, 56-61.) is available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.flora.2016.04.014Plant-derived smoke promotes germination in Mediterranean-like environments, but its effect is unclear in the Mediterranean Cistaceae. This article investigates the role of smoke in the comparative germination ecology of five Helianthemum taxa. Laboratory germination experiments were conducted using seeds collected in the field and stored in a seed bank. All seeds were mechanically scarified prior to testing. Various pre-treatments with smoke solutions and gibberellins were applied, and seeds were incubated in three germination temperature regimes (30/20 ºC, 22/12 ºC, 14/4 ºC). In H. cantabricum, H. nummularium, H. oelandicum and H. urrielense germination was very high at the three temperatures, and no effect of smoke was detected. In H. tinetense germination was generally poor and a significant effect of smoke was found, but the effect size was small. The thermal niche of Helianthemum appears to follow an opportunistic strategy, being limited only by physical dormancy at the time of dispersal. H. tinetense follows a more conservative strategy, with physiological dormancy retarding germination. In the Mediterranean basin and surrounding areas, smoke appears to be one of a multitude of environmental signals controlling germination. The smoke effect might be more relevant in certain species such as H. tinetense.E.F.P. was supported by the Government of Asturias and the FP7 Marie Curie COFUND programme of the European Commission (Grant ‘Clarín’ ACA14-19). Analysis of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems with DC Link Fault Ride-Through Capability

    Get PDF
In this work, a Fault Ride-Through control scheme for a non-isolated power topology for Hybrid Energy Storage Systems in a DC microgrid is presented. The Hybrid System is created from a Lithium-Ion Battery and a Supercapacitor Module coordinated to achieve a high-energy and high-power storage system; it is connected to a DC link to interface to the outer system. The power topology under consideration is based on the buckboost bidirectional converter, and it is controlled through a bespoke modulation scheme in order to obtain low losses in nominal operation. The operation of the proposed control during a DC link short circuit failure is shown as well as a modification to the standard control in order to achieve Fault Ride-Through once the fault is over. The operation of the converter is theoretically developed and it is verified through simulation and experimental validation. The effect of different treatments involving contact with natural lees on the aromatic profile of cider has been evaluated. Comparing with the untreated ciders, the contact with lees brought about a significant increase of the concentrations of most of the volatile compounds analysed, in particular fatty acids, alcohols, ethyl esters and 3-ethoxy-1-propanol. The opposite was observed among fusel acetate esters and 4-vinylguaiacol. The addition of β-glucanase enhanced the increase of ethyl octanoate, but produced a decrease in the contents of decanoic acid and all of the major volatiles excepting acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate and acetoine, whereas the application of oxygen influenced the rise of the level of 3-ethoxy-1-propanol only. The olfactometric profiles also revealed significant effects of the treatment with lees for ethyl propionate, diacetyl, cis-3-hexenol, acetic acid, benzyl alcohol, and m-cresol, while the addition of oxygen significantly influenced the perception of ethyl hexanoate, 1-octen-3-one, 3-methyl-2-butenol, t-3-hexenol and c-3-hexenol.Financial support for this work was managed by the National Institute of Research and Agro-Food Technology (INIA) with ERDF and ESF funds (project RTA2009-00111)
