During the last century, the sharp increase in greenhouse gases emissions due to the use of fossil fuels as main energy source in most of the global economies was the main factor responsible for climate change. Therefore, the progressive adoption of new energetic mixes with reduced greenhouse gas emissions and a more effective use of available energy resources are considered essential for tackling climate change. The use of high-temperature (>400ºC) thermal or thermochemical energy storage technologies has been presented as a suitable solution since it would contribute to increasing the energy efficiency, favour the flexibility of conventional energy production systems and facilitate the development of intermittent renewable energies by establishing a temporal bridge between energy demand and supply. Despite the significant advantages of the high temperature energy storage systems, they have not been developed to a state-of-the-art level on a large scale. Therefore, the main objective of this Thesis has been to contribute to the study and development of newly energy storage systems based on the use of reversible reactions at high temperature using CaO. The work developed within the framework of this Thesis is focused on the use of the carbonation/calcination of CaO/CaCO3 and hydration/dehydration of CaO/Ca(OH)2 as energy storage systems in conventional combustion systems and in concentrated solar power plants respectively. Conceptual design studies of the new energy storage systems as well as reactor modelling (validated against experimental results from pilot plants) and the evaluation of CaO materials for their practical use have been conducted. Two main research paths, that share certain similarities, are followed in this Thesis. Firstly, the use of energy storage systems for conventional combustion processes using fluidized bed combustors (with or without integrated CO2 capture systems) is studied at a conceptual level. These energy storage systems are presented as an economic and competitive alternative in highly flexible energy markets. Basic designs have been proposed and the related mass and heat balances solved. Secondly, the hydration and dehydration reactions of CaO and Ca(OH)2 have been studied in-depth for use in concentrated solar power systems to allow a more stable energy production of this inherent intermittent renewable energy. Studies at a conceptual level as well as reactor models have been developed using fluidized bed reactors for the hydration/dehydration reactions as the key element of the energy storage system. The reactor models have been compared and validated against experimental results obtained from pilot plant tests performed under operation conditions relevant to the large scale application of this energy storage system. The final section of this Thesis investigates CaO/Ca(OH)2-based materials (both natural and synthesized) for their use over hundreds of charge and discharge cycles. The chemical and mechanical properties of different CaO/Ca(OH)2-based materials have been studied in-depth to test for reactivity/reversibility and crushing strength/attrition resistance, respectively.Becas predoctorales Severo Ochoa del Gobierno del Principado de Asturias

Quantifying the Morphological Print of Bedload Transport

Bedload and river morphology interact in a strong feedback manner. Bedload conditions the development of river morphology along different space and time scales; however, by concentrating the flow in preferential paths, a given morphology controls bedload for a given discharge. As bedload is a non-linear response of shear stress, local morphology is likely to have a strong impact on bedload prediction when the shear stress is averaged over the section, as is usually done. This was investigated by comparing bedload measured in different bed morphologies (step-pool, plane bed, riffle-pool, braiding, and sand beds), with bedload measured in narrow flumes in the absence of any bed form, used here as a reference. The initial methodology consisted of fitting a bedload equation to the flume data. Secondly, the morphological signature of each river was studied as the distance to this referent equation. It was concluded that each morphology affects bedload in a different way. For a given average grain shear stress, the larger the river, the larger the deviation from the flume transport. Narrow streams are those morphologies that behave more like flumes; this is particularly true with flat beds, whereas results deviate from flumes to a greater extent in step-pools. The riffle-pool's morphology impacts bedload at different levels depending on the degree of bar development, considered here through the ratio D84/D50 which is used as a proxy for the local bed patchiness and morphology. In braiding rivers morphological effects are important but difficult to assess because width is dependent on transport rate. Bed morphology was found to have negligible effects in sand bed rivers where the Shields stress is usually sufficiently high to minimize the non-linearity effects when hydraulics is averaged over the section.Sedalp Alpine Space projec

Obesity has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), as the epidemic of the century. Inadequate UN Food and sedentary behavior, such as spending too many hours in front of television, computer, mobile phone and / or video games, we know that increases the risk of becoming overweight, being able to develop the so-called digital Obesity. The objectives of this article son: Give a Understand the concept of digital obesity and its harmful on Health and Promoting Healthy Habits from the familiar and community nursing implications. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in Spain is very high, with UN Obesity Cardiovascular Risk Factor Important. Community interventions reduce sedentary behaviors oriented one, have proven successful Prevent Obesity. We must address from Primary Care Modification Lifestyle, both from the nutritional point of view as encouraging exercise, trying to reduce sedentary activities related to the New Technologies. An active lifestyle a better mental health associates.

Introduction: Insomnia is a disease that is frequently addressed in Primary Care (PC) and although their prevalence is high, only 10% of patients is treated in an adequate way. In Spain, and also in Asturias, there is a high consumption of hypnotic, despite the risks associated with their use. Therefore, in order to announce and prioritize effective alternative to pharmacotherapy, it has conducted a literature review using different databases (PubMed, Uptodate, the Cochrane Library, Finisterre and NNN Consult, Bibiblioteca Murcia Health and Google), for collect the evidence about non-pharmacological therapies in insomnia. Description: It is required to highlight the importance of carrying out a correct evaluation and the role that nursery has in the treatment of insomnia though non-pharmacological measures, such us: education for health, sleeping hygiene, behavioural and cognitive behavioural therapies, mindfulness, and other alternative therapies. It would only be justified pharmacological prescription in the cases in which this treatment is inefficient or the person has a severe incapacitating or stress causing insomnia. Conclusions: Knowing the characteristics of sleeping by gender and also in the different periods of life is essential to carry out a correct diagnosis of insomnia. Initial treatment should be non-pharmacological, due to their demonstrated high effectivity. To carry them out is fundamental a correct cooperation within the Primary Care team, as it could avoid or decrease this high tendency to medication.
