The active layer in gravel-bed rivers: An empirical appraisal

    Get PDF
The vertical position of the streambed–water boundary fluctuates during the course of sediment transport episodes, due to particle entrainment/deposition and bedform migration, amongst other hydraulic and bedload mechanisms. These vertical oscillations define a topmost stratum of the streambed (i.e. the ‘active layer or active depth’), which usually represents the main source of particles entrained during long and high-magnitude bedload transport episodes. The vertical extent of this layer is hence a capital parameter for the quantification of bedload volumes and a major driver of stream ecology in gravel-bed rivers. However, knowledge on how the active depth scales to flow strength and the nature of the different controls on the relation between the flow strength and the active depth is still scarce. In this paper we present a meta-analysis over active depth data coming from ~130 transport episodes extracted from a series of published field studies. We also incorporate our own field data for the rivers Ebro and Muga (unpublished), both in the Iberian Peninsula. We explore the database searching for the influence of flow strength, grain size, streambed mobility and channel morphology on the vertical extent of the active layer. A multivariate statistical analysis (stepwise multiple regression) confirms that the set of selected variables explains a significant amount of variance in the compiled variables. The analysis shows a positive scaling between active depth and flow strength. We have also identified some links between the active depth and particle travel distances. However, these relations are also largely modulated by other fluvial drivers, such as the grain size of the bed surface and the dominant channel macro-bedforms, with remarkable differences between plane-bed, step-pool and riffle-pool channels.Programa Clarin-Marie Curie COFUND / FICYT (Principado de Asturias); proyectos MorphPeak (CGL2016-78874-R) y MorphHab (PID2019-104979RB-I00), financiados por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Ciencia e Innovación; Programa Serra Húnter (Gobierno Catalán); Departamento de Economía y Conocimiento del Gobierno Catalán a través del Grupo de Investigación Consolidado ‘Fluvial Dynamics Research Group’-RIUS (2017SGR-0459

Effects of calcitriol and paricalcitol on renal fibrosis in CKD.

BACKGROUND: In chronic kidney Disease (CKD) the activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and renal inflammation stimulate renal fibrosis and the progression to end-stage renal disease. The low levels of vitamin D receptor (VDR) and its activators (VDRAs) contribute to worsen secondary hyperparathyroidism and renal fibrosis. METHODS: The 7/8 nephrectomy model of experimental chronic renal failure (CRF) was used to examine the antifibrotic effects of treatment with two VDRAs (paricalcitol and calcitriol at equivalent doses (3/1 dose ratio) during 4 weeks. RESULTS: CRF increased the activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, renal inflammation and interstitial fibrosis. Paricalcitol treatment reduced renal collagen I and renal interstitial fibrosis by decreasing the activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system through renal changes in renin, ATR1 and ATR2 mRNAs levels and renal inflammation by decreasing renal inflammatory leukocytes (CD45), ADAM17 mRNA, TGF-β mRNA and protein and maintaining E-cadherin mRNA levels. Calcitriol showed similar trends without significant changes in most of these biomarkers. CONCLUSIONS: Paricalcitol effectively attenuated the renal interstitial fibrosis induced by CRF through a combination of inhibitory actions on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, inflammation and epithelial/mesenchymal transition. This study was supported by Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) - Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria (FIS07/0893, FIS10/00896; FIS13/00014, FIS16/00637, FIS17/00715 and FIS19/00532), Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), Plan de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación 2013-2017 y 2018-2022 del Principado de Asturias (GRUPIN14-028, IDI-2018-000152), Fundación Renal Íñigo Álvarez de Toledo (FRIAT) and Retic REDinREN from ISCIII (RD06/0016/1013, RD12/0021/0023, RD16/0009/0017, RD12/0021/0006 and RD16/0009/0018) and Abbott Pharmaceuticals (ACA-SPAI-08-22/2008). Disertación sobre la Sonata para Violonchelo solo de György Ligeti: un enfoque tanto armónico y estructural como interpretativo

Trabajo fin de estudios. This final degree work analyzes the Sonata for Violoncello solo by the Hungarian composer, Austrian nationalized, György Ligeti (1923-2006). Constructed in two movements, Dialogo and Capriccio, composed in 1948 and 1953 respectively, it belongs to the composer's Hungarian era, marked by the influence of Béla Bartók and his teacher Zoltán Kodály. Unlike the choral works composed at that time, which follow the official aesthetic, the Sonata for Cello solo shows a more evolved and transgressive language. The work would remain silent for more than 30 years, until it was performed in 1983, in Paris, by the German cellist Manfred Stilz. Nowadays, it is considered by interpreters and critics as one of the great cello solo sonatas of the 20th century, alongside those of Kodály and Hindemith.

Dual electrochemical genosensor for early diagnosis of prostate cancer through lncRNAs detection

The prostate specific antigen (PSA) test is the gold standard for the screening of prostate cancer (PCa), despite its limited clinical specificity. Long noncoding RNAs are released from the tumor tissue to the urine and show great potential for improving specificity in PCa diagnosis. This work reports on a sandwich-type hybridization assay to detect both the urinary biomarker prostate cancer antigen 3 (PCA3) and an endogenous control, the PSA mRNA. Multiple fluorescein-tagged hybridization assistant probes are used to promote the selective capture of this long noncoding RNA, and sensitivity by incorporating multiple redox enzymes per target molecule, after addition of antifluorescein Fab fragment-peroxidase conjugate. This strategy alleviates the problems associated with the low natural abundance of this marker, its large size, and complex secondary structure. The individual genosensors exhibit good sensitivity (2.48 ± 0.01 μA nM 1 and 6.4 ± 0.3 μA nM 1 for PCA3 and PSA, respectively), with wide linear ranges (from 25 pM to 10 nM for PCA3 and 1 nM for PSA), and detection limits in the low picomolar range (4.4 pM and 1.5 pM for PCA3 and PSA, respectively). This analytical performance is retained in the dual configuration without significant cross-talk, despite using the same enzyme label. The usefulness of this dual platform was demonstrated by analyzing RNA extracts from the prostate cancer cell line LNCaP and from urine samples of prostate cancer patients.Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria del Principado de Asturias (ISPA

La figura del concertino en la orquesta sinfónica. Funciones, competencias requeridas y preparación para el desempeño del puesto.

    Get PDF
