Trabajo fin de estudios. This project is about Ian Clarke, British flute player and contemporary composer for this instrument. The project begins with an approach of Ian Clarke’s life and work, taking into account his personal and musical context and the influences that define his compositional style. Such research is complemented by the musical analysis of three of his works (The Great Train Race, Zoom Tube, Orange Dawn) and the subsequent conclusions. The last part of the project investigates the presence of his repertoire in higher degree in music in Spain. For this, a study of the teaching guides and programmes of the centers that teach this degree is used, as well as multiple interviews with teachers and students who can verify the real situation of his repertoire, that is, if it is actually interpreted or not.

This research is based on the study of 919 Sevillian potteries from 36 archaeological excavations carried out in Asturias (Spain). The methodology used has classified ceramics of Seville according to their different products, function groups, series, and typologies, according to the preceding literature. This project created a database and geographic information system that includes variables for each pottery piece. These data have allowed us to offer, for the first time, an estimate of the trade and evolution of the consumption of these ceramics in the north of the Iberian peninsula during the Early Modern Period. It is a dynamic trade and consumption subject to the political and economic vicissitudes of the moment.

Carbon/silica hybrid aerogels with controlled porosity by a quick one-pot synthesis

    Get PDF
Hybrid aerogels from carbon and silica precursors were obtained via a rapid process by microwave heating and the use of catalysts. Due to the varied nature of the precursors, one of the key points in synthesizing these hybrid aerogels is to ensure a homogeneous mixture during the entire synthesis process. It is well known that using microwaves may accelerate some reactions, but our study also evaluated the so-called microwave effect on certain reactions. Another strategy to boost polymerization reactions is the addition of a specific catalyst. The addition of a small amount of aminosilanes to the precursor solution was also evaluated with excellent results. The combination of the two different strategies (i.e., microwave heating and addition of aminosilanes) makes it possible to obtain hybrid aerogels via a rapid process and also to define the final porous properties via the usual synthesis variables (e.g., dilution ratio) in sol-gel synthesis

Hybrid RF-Si Xerogels: A Cost-Effective Proposal for Insulator Materials

    Get PDF
Hybrid xerogels RF/Si were synthesized by controlling the chemical variables involved in the polymerization process (i.e., molar ratios, dilution ratio, catalysts, etc.) and evaluated as insulator materials. Higher insulating performances were recorded for these hybrids compared with their counterparts made from only one of their components (i.e., RF or Si xerogels with similar porous characteristics). The analysis of chemical and structural features correlated with heat transfer methods was useful in understanding the sum of contributions involved in the thermal conductivity of RF/Si xerogels. Variables such as roughness and tortuosity can be used to improve the performance of xerogels from a different perspective. In this way, thermal conductivities of 25 mW/mK were achieved without lengthy process steps or special drying methods. Knowledge of material design and the use of microwave heating during the synthesis allowed us to approach a simple and cost-effective process. These results suggest that the hybrid materials developed in this work are a good starting point for the future of the massive production of insulation materials

Effect of the porosity and microstructure on the mechanical properties of organic xerogels

    Get PDF
The synthesis of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) xerogels is versatile enough to provide materials with custom pore size distributions in the meso/macroporous range. Specifically, seven xerogels were synthesised by changing the pH of the same RF solution, from pH 3 to pH 6. The resulting materials presented meso/macropore size distributions with average pore sizes from <5 to 510 nm, as determined by Hg intrusion and N2 adsorption. Most of the RF xerogels had very similar geometric densities, except for the gels obtained at the two highest pH values, which were more dense. Both flexural and uniaxial compression tests were carried out to determine the dependence of strength and stiffness on the porosity of the xerogels. The results followed a power-law relationship between the mechanical properties and the density of the materials. However, two series of RF xerogels were found to fit such law independently, with the gels obtained at the three most acidic pH values (pH 3-4) showing unexpectedly high compression moduli. Further characterisation of the xerogels microstructure revealed the existence of rod-like microstructures that would bear most loads during the compression tests. These microstructures would act as struts that, once broken, would cause the catastrophic failure (bursting) of the xerogel
