Bone and Vascular Health and the Kidney

    No full text
In patients with progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD), the homeostatic mechanisms regulating calcium and phosphate metabolism suffer important changes resulting in low serum levels of calcitriol and calcium and phosphorous retention. The regulatory mechanisms fail and several chronic kidney disease mineral bone disorders (CKD-MBD) occur, including bone disease, vascular calcifications, cardiovascular disorders, bone fragility fractures and reduced survival. Vascular calcification, bone loss and increased fracture risk are severe disorders associated with ageing in chronic CKD, but also generally speaking. Several epidemiological studies have shown the relationship between impaired bone metabolism, vascular calcification and increased mortality. Recent data suggest this association may be not just a consequence of ageing; the common occurrence of severe cases of vascular calcifications together with low bone activity and osteoporosis suggests there might be some direct biological links between the bone and the vascular systems. New challenging experimental data suggest that once the severe vascular calcification appears, vessels may develop a mechanism to diminish the vascular mineralization in the artery wall, this defensive mechanism may have a negative impact favouring the reduction of bone mass.Part of the works presented in this review were supported by Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias (FIS 04/1567, 07/0893 and 08/90136), Fundación para el Fomento en Asturias de la Investigación Científica aplicada Y Técnica (FICYT I30P06P and IB 05-060), Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Retic-RD06), Red Investigación Renal (16/06), Fondo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER), Instituto Reina Sofía de Investigación and Fundación Renal Íñigo Álvarez de Toledo

Cryopreservation of the Bovine Oocyte: Current Status and Perspectives

    No full text
This review presents some of the most noticeable aspects related with the oocyte cryopreservation procedures, emphasizing their evolution in the bovine, which points towards the critical points determining the reduced survival rates of female gametes to freezing and vitrification. Factors such as the maturation status, the cytoskeleton and membrane sensitivity, the role of the cumulus cells, the impact of the cryoprotectants agents and the protocols utilized and the future of this tool have been extensively reviewed

Las malas hierbas contribuyen a la supervivencia de algunas bacterias fitopatógenas

    No full text

Goat grazing, its interactions with other herbivores and biodiversity conservation issues

    No full text
Goats have developed in harmony with local conditions of climate, terrain, vegetation, and even pathogens over centuries in many areas, while they have been blamed of causing environment degradation in other ones. The paper summarizes the situation of goat's population worldwide, the status of the breeds and the multiple implications of their conservation, the interactions of goats with other animal species (wild or domestic) and the main issues regarding the consequences of goat grazing from the environmental point of view. It underlines that most of the environmentally harmful effects of goat grazing arise from improper management practices at very high grazing pressures whereas goat grazing can be a useful tool for conservation if managed adequately. Moderate grazing pressures can be compatible with high levels of biodiversity and provide externalities, whereas high intensity at short term can be a valuable tool for weed control. Goat genetic heritage is seriously threatened and requires more studies and greater support from national and international institutions, in parallel with other efforts in rural development, especially for remote areas which hold an outstanding reservoir of livestock diversity adapted to the local conditions and managed by impoverished communities. A multidisciplinary approach of scientists, policy makers, rangeland managers and local communities is required for the design of future sustainable management plans

Learning data structure from classes: A case study applied to population genetics

    No full text
In most cases, the main goal of machine learning and data mining applications is to obtain good classifiers. However, final users, for instance researchers in other fields, sometimes prefer to infer new knowledge about their domain that may be useful to confirm or reject their hypotheses. This paper presents a learning method that works along these lines, in addition to reporting three interesting applications in the field of population genetics in which the aim is to discover relationships between species or breeds according to their genotypes. The proposed method has two steps: first it builds a hierarchical clustering of the set of classes and then a hierarchical classifier is learned. Both models can be analyzed by experts to extract useful information about their domain. In addition, we propose a new method for learning the hierarchical classifier. By means of a voting scheme employing pairwise binary models constrained by the hierarchical structure, the proposed classifier is computationally more efficient than previous approaches while improving on their performance

    No full text
