Epidemiología de la cirugía menor en atención primaria. Estudio descriptivo de 50.000 intervenciones.

    No full text
Introduction: Minor surgical (MS) procedures are carried out in different areas of primary care as well as by different professionals. There are not many studies which consistently evaluate these variables, the magnitude of this health benefit, nor its impact on the health system. The aim of the present study is to quantify the magnitude of these techniques in primary care. Materials and methods: Descriptive study of Minor Surgery carried out in 2009 in three primary health-care areas of Asturias with a population of 799,472 inhabitants. The data were obtained from the electronic medical record (OMI-AP). Results: 54,723 episodes were found which can be solved by means of either emergency or scheduled MS, a figure that represents 6.8% of the population. Of the urgent cases, three-quarters involved healing cutaneous wounds, and among the scheduled cases, a third were benign skin tumours, another third were cutaneous injuries of viral origin, and a quarter were benign subcutaneous tumours. These cases were initially opened by general practitioners (59%) and by nurses (41%). Conclusions: With regard to previous research, the present study reveals the highest prevalence of cases of minor surgery. Either way, the volume of these surgical interventions is important enough to be taken into account in health services planning, and warrants further research.

    No full text

Interleukin 6, soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor I and red blood cell distribution width as biological markers of functional dependence in an elderly population: a translational approach

    No full text
In present investigation we have analyzed the association between functional dependence and inflammatory biomarkers using the Barthel Index (BI) and the Katz Index (KI). This analysis may contribute to translational medicine by incorporating the clinical and laboratory data to better understand the relationship between chronic inflammation and functional dependence in the elderly population. The ultimate goal of this study was to identify possible useful biomarkers of functional dependence in the elderly. Participants in this study consisted of 120 older subjects (90 women and 30 men; range 68-105 years) who were selected from the Santa Teresa nursing home (Oviedo, Spain). We studied functional status using the following tools to diagnose the functionaldependence by clinicians: BI and KI for activities of daily living. We analyzed morbidity, sociodemographic characteristics and a panel of inflammatory and nflammatory-related markers. In linear regression models adjusted by age, sex, antiinflammatory drug use and morbid conditions high levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and soluble TNF receptor-I (sTNF-RI) were associated with functional dependence as measured using BI and KI. Elevated levels of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) were also associated with functional dependence measured using the KI after adjusting for the same potential confounders. The current results suggest that high IL-6, sTNF-RI and RDW levels are independently associated with the functional dependence in the elderly population. The results are consistent with the presumed underlying biological mechanism, in which the up-regulation of inflammatory mediators is associated with functional dependence in elderly subjects. We are part of INPROTEOLYS group and National Net RETICEF for Aging study. A Pseudomonas viridiflava-Related Bacterium Causes a Dark-Reddish Spot Disease in Glycine max

    No full text
A virulent Pseudomonas viridiflava-related bacterium has been identified as a new pathogen of soybean, one of the most important crops worldwide. The bacterium was recovered from forage soybean leaves with dark-reddish spots, and damage on petioles and pods was also observed. In contrast, common bean was not affected

Louping Ill in Goats, Spain, 2011

    No full text
Although louping ill affects mainly sheep, a 2011 outbreak in northern Spain occurred among goats. Histopathologic lesions and molecular genetics identified a new strain of louping ill virus, 94% identical to the strain from Britain. Surveillance is needed to minimize risk to domestic and wildlife species and humans

In vitro and in vivo quality of bovine embryos in vitro produced with sex-sorted sperm

    No full text
In this work we analyzed the effects of three culture systems on developmental ability of bovine embryos in vitro produced with sexed sperm, the survival to vitrification (cryologic vitrification method) of such blastocysts, and their pregnancy rates after embryo transfer to recipients, both as fresh and after vitrification/warming. Finally, we measured the accuracy of the sorting protocol by a polymerase chain reaction-based method to validate the embryo sex at blastocyst stages. We confirmed an individual effect of the bull as well as development rates of embryos produced with sorted sperm lower than embryos with unsorted sperm, independent of the culture system used. The cryoresistance to vitrification of embryos produced with sexed sperm did not differ from that of conventionally produced embryos (re-expansion rates at 24 and 48 h: 74.6% vs. 75.5%, and 64.5% vs. 68.1% for embryos produced with conventional and sorted sperm, respectively; hatching rates at 48 h: 63.55% vs. 55.5% for embryos produced with conventional and sorted sperm, respectively). Finally, no significant differences were found in pregnancy rates after the embryo transfer of fresh and vitrified/warmed blastocysts (52.8% vs. 42.0%, respectively; P > 0.05). Male and female embryos produced with sorted sperm showed the same quality in terms of developmental ability, cryoresistance, and pregnancy rates after transfer. Our culture system, coupled with the vitrification in fiber plugs, provides good quality sex-known embryos which survive vitrification at similar rates than embryos produced with conventional unsorted sperm; also it produces good pregnancy rates after transfer of sexed embryos both fresh and after vitrification and warming
