    Corrective Feedback to Improve Students Writing Ability

    This article refers to a Lesson Study research implementing Corrective Feedback to enhance the students writing ability. The research aims to identify: (1) kinds and types of corrective feedback given by the lecturer to improve the students writing ability and (2) the process of giving corrective feedback in Creative Writing classroom. It was conducted to 37 second year students in the odd semester of 2016/2017 academic year of a University of Nusantara PGRI in Kediri, East Java. Questionaire, interview and tests were given before and after the implementation of corrective feedback activities and it had two cycles, consisting of three main stages, they are Plan, Do and See stage. The instruments used were questionnaire and interviews were given to the students before and after the implementation. The result showed that corrective feedback activities improved students writing ability. The students were interested in creative writing class as they paid good attention and felt fun when they were involved in making creative paragraphs consisting of a short story to be presented in front of the class and expressed their ideas upon the stories given. Their worries of making mistakes were decreased since the lecturer gave oral corrective feedback directly when they made mistakes in deciding the intrinsic elements of making short story and also when the lecturer made some notes upon their works as written corrective feedback discussing about the aspects of writing such as grammatical structure of sentences, vocabulary, ideas, organization and also mechanic. After having some beneficial notes to be revised the students will absolutely get the points about what the mistakes and weaknesses they made that not to be done again for the next project

    Doing research in colleges and universities is an essential activity since it may provide students a good basis to become professional researcher and teacher in the future. However, few students in Vietnam can recognize the importance of research activities or possess an adequate background of knowledge to participate in these activities, and additionally, the obligatory course of Research Methodology offered in many universities cannot bring enough understanding in doing research to students.     An Investigation into Conceptual Metaphors Denoting Life in American and Vietnamese Short Stories

    Metaphor has attracted the attention of scholars interested in language for more than 2000 years (Ning Yu, 1998). Traditionally, metaphor was viewed as a matter of language, only used in literature to embellish discourse (Kovecses, 2010). However, cognitive linguistics presents a different view of metaphor, stating that metaphor is pervasive and essential in language and thought (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). It is defined as understanding one abstract conceptual domain (target domain), in terms of another concrete one (source domain). The concept of life has been one of the most common target domains, which is hard to fully comprehend without establishing a set of mappings, i.e. a set of systematic correspondences, between this undelineated notion and other better-known ones. Therefore, this study attempts to probe into conceptual metaphors denoting life in nineteen American and nineteen Vietnamese short stories from 1975 to 1991 in the light of Lakoff and Johnsons framework (1980). The two sets of collected data, specifically 89 illustrations in English and 114 in Vietnamese, are compared and contrasted to find out the similarities and differences in the use of these conceptual metaphors between two languages, in the hope to contribute to foreign language teaching, learning, and translating proces
