The Importance of Financial Condition Indices in South-Eastern Europe
In this paper, we construct the Financial Conditions Index of 11 European economies - Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Germany, and Turkey. We aim to reveal the sensitivity of the FCIs to the dynamics of the global financial conditions and to investigate and establish dependencies between the constructed FCIs and those of the USA and Germany. We prove that FCI is sensitive to the upcoming shocks from the USA and Germany. When studying the sensitivity of the FCIs to the U.S and German indices we prove that the impact of the American conditions is substantially stronger. We may conclude that the tightening of financial conditions causes a slowdown in GDP growth in the future while a weakening stimulates inflation. We proved that local financial conditions incorporate faster and more strongly the influence of global financial shocks than changes in domestic policy rates
How Generations Perceive each other in Terms of Their Attitudes Towards Work: A Qualitative Analysis on Generation X And Generation Y
It is a common belief that generations differ from each other, and the perceptions arising from generational differences are reflected in the individual's attitudes towards work. This is one of the reasons why the management of generations’ working in harmony with each other in today's multi-generational workplaces maintains its place on the agenda as an important issue. At this point, besides just putting forward these distinctive attitudes towards work, which are caused by generational differences, putting forward how generations perceive each other in terms of their attitudes towards work is significant as well. Based on this concern, in this study, where qualitative research methodology was adopted and semi-structured interview technique was used, the data was collected from 38 Generation X and Generation Y employees working in two large enterprises operating in the food sector in Turkey. According to the findings, the perceptions of Generation X employees on Generation Y employees’ attitudes towards work were gathered under the main themes as “low organizational commitment” and “low power distance expectation” while the perceptions of Generation Y employees on Generation X employees’ attitudes towards work were gathered under the main themes as “high organizational commitment” and “high power distance expectation”
WHICH YOUTUBER SHOULD BE FOLLOWED? A COMPARISON BASED DELPHI-AHP-TOPSIS
With the development of technology, education activities also get their share from the rapid transformation. With social media platforms, it is now possible to access information from anywhere at any time. While the accuracy of every information in the virtual world is discussed, the information provided on platforms such as YouTube also has results related to the channel that transmits the information. Many videos are shared on YouTube in various fields (education, music, sports, comedy etc.). Education-based YouTube channels are also highly preferred among these channels. This study aims to identify and prioritize possible alternatives to identify how YouTube-based users decide on the YouTubers (Youtube channel owner) that they select and in order to be constantly improved. Comparison with a Delphi-AHP-TOPSIS based methodology is divided into 3 stages. The first stage is the Delphi Method, where basic performance factors and sub-factors are defined, synthesized and prioritized. The second stage is the use of AHP method to obtain the general performance index of the main factors and sub-factors. The third stage is the ranking of possible alternatives between TOPSIS technique and 10 YouTubers for continuous improvement of YouTube channels. As a result of the analyzes, the most important criteria in choosing YouTuber were tried to be determined and ideal solutions were presented in decision making
EFFECTS OF REGULATORY AUTHORITIES ON SUGAR MARKETS: AN EVALUATION ON THE USA CASE
Studies have shown that public regulatory authorities can serve self-interest instead of public interest. The US sugar market can be given as a concrete example of this situation. Regulatory actions for the sugar market have led to the widespread use of high fructose corn syrup, which has been called the plague of the age. The production of high fructose corn syrup, which has increased day by day in the US, has reduced sugar imports and significantly contributed to the economy with its undisputed role in the food sector. However, at the same time, the increase in chronic diseases and chronic health expenditures in the US has come to the fore as a problem that needs to be addressed.
This study primarily focused on the activities of regulatory bodies and then emphasized the existence of the causality relation between the increase in high fructose corn syrup production and consumption, and the increase in health costs. The findings of this study supported the negative perceptions and judgments the society has towards high fructose corn syrup. In addition, the study was conducted within the framework of the 3rd best policy, which has been rarely used in the literature, and presents how public efficiency can be achieved
Determinants of Household Education Expenditures by Education Level: The Case of Turkey
There is a cost of educational attainment, which is covered by households as well as the state. While government spending on education emphasizes public responsibility for the realization and support of the existing service, education expenditures by households emphasize benefiting from educational services.
The expenditures made by households differ by some socio-economic factors and are not the same for all levels of education. Some levels of education may cost more in terms of basic and supportive requirements.
The purpose of this study is to identify determinants of household education expendiures and to examine whether education expenditures at education levels are affected by the same determinants. Data used in the study was obtained from the 2017 household budget survey, which was prepared by Turkey Statistical Institute
Money, Banks, and Savings: A Comparative Analysis of Turkish Laypeople's Social Representations over Five Periods (1999-2017)
The way and context-specific scope of how money and banks are mirrored in citizens’ minds is an expanding area of research in relation to economic psychology. Through the analysis of data collected from salaried employees, self-employed professionals, and small/medium enterprise [SME] owners, lay people’s social representations for money, saving and banks in Turkey are comparatively investigated and analysed over time. Grounded in a previous study by authors (undisclosed), with respective samples from the years of 1999, 2001, 2007, 2015, a new fifth dataset for 2017 is introduced here. Changing priorities, understanding and cognitive constructs related to money, banks and savings were particularly analysed to be substantially interconnected with the evolving socioeconomic dynamics and conditions of the crisis periods. Negative evocations and lack of trust became prominent as to the findings such that banks are seen as contemporary pawnshops; money is mirrored as a symbol of power, prestige and reputation, and cannot be achieved through hard work
Pandemics and Domestic Violence during Covid-19
The year 2020 met us with the COVID-19 pandemic. The covid-19 pandemic has gone past a mere health challenge. Its effect can be felt in the economy and society in general. Women form a large chunk of the response efforts geared at flattening the curve of the COVID-19 scourge. As the first point of contact, caregivers, medical personnel, volunteers, logistics facilitators, researchers and scientists and other professionals critical to the fight against the virus, women are making profound contributions in the fight against the spread of the outbreak. Most of the caregivers found in our homes and communities today are women. Furthermore, women stand a higher risk of infection and loss of their sources of livelihood, and as the outbreak continues to spread, there is all likelihood that they may not be able to access programs vital to their reproductive and sexual health. There is also a rise in cases of domestic violence against women in this crisis period. This study will be exploring a wide range of literature about pandemics that have happened in the past and previous public health emergencies and crisis, to enable it to ascertain patterns by which pandemics can further heighten the different kinds of violence against women. Evidence gathered from this study will be used to make recommendations to governments, civil society organizations, community-based agencies, and international donor agencies to help make women and children’s health priority, keeping them safe and preparing them adequately for another possible pandemic. The year 2020 met us with the COVID-19 pandemic. DOES PERCEPTION OF WORK STRESS AND JOB SATISFACTION PREDICT BEING GENERATION X OR Y? SAMPLE OF PARTICIPATION BANKS IN TURKEY
According to literature, in a situation where Generation X is satisfied, Generation Y may not be. If there are differences in expectation and stress sources between generations as explained in the theory, it can also be expected to guess correctly whether one is Generation X or Y via these differences. This research has been conducted in order to test the thesis mentioned above.
The scope of the research is the Head Office and Istanbul branches of Participation Banks. In total, 392 people participated in the research. The data acquired from the sample was analyzed through logistic regression method. Job satisfaction scale is Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale. Both work stress scale and indicative scale of Generations X and Y were obtained by referring to the descriptive information that takes place in the relevant literature. Because of the weak consistence between the logistic regression model and the research data, perception levels of work stress and job satisfaction cannot predict to be Generation X or Y significantly
Analysis of the Effects of Defense Expenditures on Income Distribution and Economic Development with Panel Asymmetric Causality Test: Brics Countries and Turkey Case
In this study, for BRICS countries and Turkey defense spending economic development and income distribution relationship is examined for the period 1995-2015. High defense expenditures are on the agenda as an important research topic in the world and in our country. Therefore, the effects of defense expenditures on income distribution and economic development of countries can be determined by examining these three variables. For the BRICS countries and Turkey, to examining the impact of defense spending and income distribution to economic development too much work not found. Westerlund (2008) found that the cointegration relationship between the main variables and the negative components was not detected in the long term, whereas long-term relationship was found between the positive components.
According to the results of the asymmetric panel causality analysis, only one-way causality from economic growth to defense expenditures was determined between economic growth and defense expenditures in the period 1995-2010, while there was no causality from defense expenditures to economic growth. One-way causality from income inequality to defense expenditures was identified between 1995 and 2010 in terms of income inequality and defense expenditures, while bi-directional causality was detected in 1996-2011 period. In the period of 2000-2015, it is concluded that there is a one-way causality from defense expenditures to income inequality
