Equity in Education Financing: The Case of Turkey

    Get PDF
This study investigates the burden of out-of-pocket education expenditures on households in Turkey. To measure equity in education financing we follow a conceptual framework outlined by UNESCO (2018) and utilize approaches previously used in assessing health equity. Following Wagstaff et al.’s (2008) approach, we first calculate education expenditure as a share of Ability-to-Pay (ATP), and then utilize the Lorenz dominance analysis to compare the distribution of these education expenditures with the distribution of income. Lastly, we calculate Kakwani indices and measure the magnitude of progressivity. The results indicate that from 2004 to 2012, education expenditures as a share of three different proxies of the standard of living (disposable income, market income, and total expenditure) increased for every income quintile. Based on the Lorenz dominance analyses, the low-income group’s share of income is often lower than its share of education expenditures – suggesting regressive education financing. Comparing expenditures by levels of education shows that primary education financing is progressive, whereas tertiary education financing is regressive. The results indicate that the provision of education policies in and of itself is not sufficient for attaining a more equitable education system

    Get PDF
This research aims to review the extant literature on Covid-19 using bibliometric analysis in an attempt to gauge the evolving state of tourism research since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Thompson Reuters’ Web of Science Core Collection database was chosen to collect the bibliographic data of 3179 publications for the period of 2020- February 2022. CiteSpace software was then employed to analyze and visualize the documents. Co-citation analysis and co-occurrence of keywords were carried out in terms of bibliometric analysis. The findings revealed a significant increase in the diversity of topics and subtopics addressed by researchers regarding Covid-19. This bibliometric review provides a comprehensive and objective review of Covid-19 related publications in the tourism field. It extends previous reviews by visualizing the underlying structure via CiteSpace software and adding current publications. Furthermore, this study may help researchers better evaluate and monitor research trends in tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic

Model Design and Development for a User Support System Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques in Enterprise Resource Planning Software

    Get PDF
For organizations, the error-free, consistent, and transparent management of business processes is crucial. Process management is related to the proper handling of data, and this is achievable through enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, which enables all departments structured around a central database to work together. From an organizational perspective, one of the most critical factors in the success of ERP software is its users. Users often require support during the use of ERP software for various reasons, such as lack of training and experience or technical issues. Providing this support, whether internally or from external sources, comes with a cost. This study seeks to determine whether a structure can be developed where users can resolve their support requests themselves. To achieve this goal, we propose a model of an intelligent user support system with an AI-based process engine for ERP users. Using this model, unstructured user support requests created in natural language are transformed into structured forms using natural language processing techniques and then classified using multi-class machine learning algorithms. The relevant class's process is executed to generate a solution for the user's problem. In this study, 1,000 samples of text written in natural language in 10 different categories, based on real data, were used in the learning process. The data were analyzed using machine learning algorithms (K-Nearest Neighbors, Naive Bayes, C4.5, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Sequential Minimal Optimization, LibSVM) and deep learning algorithms (Long Short-Term Memory), The best classification was achieved with Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO) using TF-IDF weighting. The developed chat and process robot helped convert requests or problems into a structured form and provided solutions. In addition to solving the problem through chat or process, technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality were used

Do Investors Reward the Quality of Integrated Reporting

    Get PDF
The need for a holistic view in the new era of information processing by investors has brought along the integrated reporting practice. With this type of reporting, firms do not only report financial information to investors; they also communicate the value creation process by relating financial information to non-financial ESG information. International Integrated Reporting Framework provides firms to publish high quality integrated reports. This study aims to examine if the quality of IR disclosure matters for investment decisions of investors and whether this result is affected by firm characteristics, such as size, age or financing preferences. The sample includes 1210 firm-year observations that are obtained by analyzing the integrated reports of 242 firms that are included in integrated reporting index presented in IFRS foundation website, for the period between 2019 and 2023. The findings of fixed effects panel data analysis reveal a significant positive effect of IR quality on returns, especially for bigger firms with less reliance on external financing. On the other hand, firm age and willingness to disclose IR are not priced by investors. The findings of this paper could help the managers shaping the reporting preferences, as well as financing decisions, by considering their effects on firm value. However, managers should also consider the incremental effects of their local investment environment, as this study does not divide the sample for countries or regions

    Get PDF
The aim of the research is to understand the relationship between green transformational leadership and firm performance, evaluating the role of sustainability strategies in this connection. Increasing global environmental issues and social inequalities necessitate companies to prioritize sustainability principles not only for financial concerns but also because of green transformation. In this context, focusing on the role of sustainability strategies is the main objective of the research. Quantitative research methods, specifically the cross-sectional survey method, were employed for data collection and analysis. A sample of 391 white-collar employees working in companies operating in Turkey was determined using the convenience sampling method. The data collected through surveys were analyzed using the AMOS 24 statistical program. The findings indicate that green transformational leadership is influential on firm performance, environmental sustainability, and economic sustainability. Additionally, economic sustainability was found to play a mediating role in the relationship between green transformational leadership and firm performance. It is expected that the obtained findings will provide a significant foundation for business leaders, guiding them in the development of sustainability-based strategies

Applications of Circular Economy and Wine Tourism in Viniculture: A Case Study

    Get PDF
Sustainability of wine production is a major factor for its competitiveness and marketability. Traditional viniculture is more sustainable and provides solutions to modern issues. One such deduction is circular economy, encouraging resource efficiency, waste extraction, reducing costs, minimising waste and pollution. Wine tourism may also contribute in synergy, by reducing distribution costs, offering a direct sales channel, and effectively communicating the story and meaning of wine, the winemaker and the region. This paper explores the applications of these two in viniculture. A case study has been conducted on a small-scale winemaker in Urla, Izmir, comprising of interviews and participant observation. The findings exhibit real-life, synergistic examples. Applications of circular economy in small-scale viniculture are shown to increase resource efficiency, close production loops, limit waste & pollution and add value to the product. Wine tourism, while reducing costs and increasing sales, was reported to be an efficient direct communications channel with the visitor, granting a personality to wine. Due to its absolute advantages of enriching the product and the consumer and service provision, wine tourism closes the ultimate production loop. Synergistically, these tools may improve the profitability, marketability and the sustainability of viniculture

These are the interpretation of popular cultures through consumption, transforming consumption practices and their symbols, seeking to acquire authenticity and status, conspicuous consumption tendencies and interpretation of popular culture through. These findings present a substantial discussion regarding the transformation of consumer classes. Keywords: Consumption culture; veiled youth; symbolic meanings, popular cultur
