    Strategies in Translating Wordplay in Perahu Kertas Novel from Indonesian to English

    The aims of this research are to identify wordplays found in the source-language text, classify them based on their types, and then analyze the strategies used to translate them. This research utilizes the descriptive qualitative approach. The data sources of this research were a novel entitled Perahu Kertas authored by Dewi Lestari as the source language text, and the translation of this novel entitled Paper Boat that was translated by Tiffany Tsao as the target language text. The theories apply in this research are the theories about Wordplay proposed by Dirk Delabastita (1993) and Leech (1969). After analyzing 20 data, the researcher found four types of Wordplay, they are phonological structure (homonymy, Homophony, and Paronymy), lexical development (Idiom), play on antonym, and punning repetition. Furthermore, four strategies used by translators in translating Wordplay are discovered as a result of this analysis. The four strategies used by the translator are Wordplay to Wordplay, Wordplay to non-wordplay, wordplay ST into wordplay TT, and Wordplay to zero.     Analysis of Deixis in Short Story “A Little Match Girlâ€: Pragmastylistics Study

    This study has purposes to analyze and describe the language style used by Hans Christian Andersen in his short story entitled 'A Little Match Girl' by using pragmatic aspects that are carried out by analyzing deixis components in the story text. This research applied the descriptive qualitative design. By using pragmastylistics theory, this research focuses on the type of deixis used by the author in presenting his story which is then used to reveal the language style of the literary text. The data of this study were collected from deictic words used in the short story. The steps which are used by the researchers are begun from reading, taking notes, analyzing, categorizing and then summarizing the data. The results reveal five kinds of deixis consisting of person, time, place, social and discourse deixis were used in the text. From the data analysis, 97 deixis were found in total with 65 data of person deixis, 4 data of place deixis, 4 data of time deixis, 14 data of social deixis, and 10 data of discourse deixis. Finally, the most frequent deixis found in the short story is the person deixis, especially third-person deixis which indicates that the author of the short story used third-person point of view to convey his ideas in his short story

    Fighting Body Ideal Construction in America as Expressed in Julie Murphy’s Dumplin’

    Not only marginalize and discriminate big-size women, social contruction of ideal body has contribute to eating disorder and anorexia on women in America. Thus it triggers rejections of protest through all platforms and one of them is Julie Murphy’s Dumplin’. The purpose of this research is to reveal Julie Murphy’s worldview of fighting discrimination because of social construction in novel Dumplin’. Dumplin’ is chosen as the material object of this study. The formal object of this study is how the main character fight the social construction through its relation with other characters. Julie Murphy’s Dumplin’ is believed to express the social group world vision thus Lucien Goldmann genetic structuralism theory is used. Dialectical method is used to achieve the purpose of this study. The primary data are taken from Dumplin’ novel. The secondary data are taken from journals and books related to this study. The focus of the research are 1) analyzing the literary structure of the novel through the relations of its characters, 2) finding the genesis of the novel by analyzing the social structure, 3) the author’s (social group) worldvision in the novel. Therefore, the structure of the novel are analyzed through the characters relations and the genesis found as the social structure investigated and analyzed. The result of analysis shows that the author World View represents social groups fighting againsts body ideal construction such as NAAFA, The Fat Acceptance Movement and Body Positivity Movement that try to fight and modify the body ideal construction as dominant social construction that exists in society through her novel Dumplin’

    Antigone’s Phallus Envy and Its Comparison to Indonesian Dramas’ Characters: A Freudian Perspective

    Antigone’s character has developed phallus envy. Phallus envy seems to also appear in the Indonesian dramas Djinak-Djinak Merpati and Kami, Perempoean which were written during the Japanese colonialization in Indonesia. Freudian perspective, in this case, Freudian psychoanalysis helps to scrutinize the characters in the dramas. This research is to present and elucidate Antigone’s phallus envy and its comparison to Indonesian dramas by applying Freud’s Id, Ego, and Superego. The qualitative method is applied based on the theory used. Antigone’s phallus envy is the result of her traumatic past experiences as well as the stereotype and position of women in the ancient Greek era. Similar to the characters from the Indonesian dramas, Moerni, Sri, and Aminah. The causes of their phallus envy are emphasized on the stereotype of women in Indonesia during Japanese colonization that influences the way they think and behaves toward the people around them, especially men.      Â

    Information in the COVID-19 Pandemic Era: Is it Fact Fake or Fear

    Concerns about fake news on social network sites are ascending. The aim is to deliberately create and share false or manipulated information to mislead the public, to cause harm for public figures, and/or get financial gains.  In Morocco, the rise of fake news in the COVID-19 era highlights the fight of many media institutions, including the Maghreb Agency Press, against misinformation. The content used by media and social network sites to report about the spread of the disease has put the pandemic at the forefront of people’s daily discourse. Actually, the outbreak of unfiltered information on the COVID-19 contagion seems to have sparked fear amongst the public via re-tweetable tweets, likable posts, and shared documents. For about three months, a deluge of fake news was created to target COVID-19, health stuff, society, security, and religion, among other public domains. Relying on the Maghreb Agency Press database fact-checking, the present study investigated news stories, verified by the agency as false stories, since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country between March 11 and June 11th, 2020. The data comprise 249 stories posted, shared, and re-tweeted by people on social network sites. Overall, an increasing trend in sharing fake news on COVID-19, health, security, crime, society, and education, among other issues has been observed. The role of social media is determinant in the propagation of misinformation. Equally important, the constructed and shared content on social networking sites regarding the issue of COVID-19 needs to be carefully considered so as not to maximize public fear and panic

    Code Switching and Code Mixing Study in “Hitam Putih†Talk Show Program

    This research aimed to investigate the kinds of code-switching and code-mixing used by the participants in Hitam Putih talk show. By analysing each statement of code-switching and code mixing which is spoken by the speakers of Hitam Putih talk show, the researcher tried to analyse the point of view of Sociolinguistics to see the phenomena of the code-switching and code-mixing used by the participants in the talk show. The approach of this study is qualitative. The researcher obtained the data from the program channel on the YouTube by taking notes. The finding of this study shows that the host of the talk show used code switching and code mixing in order to make the audiences understand the conversation between the presenter and the guest. Besides, the guest whose first language is not Indonesian in fact she tried to speak Indonesian in order to appreciate the Indonesian audiences. Another purpose of doing the code switching and code mixing on that program is to educate the audiences to know more about what the guest said in English

    The Strategies and Orientation of Translating Idiomatic Expressions in Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Novel

    In translating idiomatic expressions, strategies are applied in order to make the result equivalent in the target language. This research proposes to explore the strategies used in translating idiomatic expressions and translation orientation. Translating idiomatic expressions might cause difficulties for translator and the result tend to be based on the source or target language. Therefore, we proposed to investigate the translation strategies of the novel “The Adventures of The Huckleberry Finnâ€. It aims at deciding the most frequent strategies used in the translating idiomatic expressions and translation orientation. This research is descriptive qualitative study using content analysis applying purposive sampling technique since not the whole novel is investigated. This finding shows that there are 53 idiomatic expressions translated using strategies proposed by Mona Baker (2018). This research also found that there are four strategies are used by the translator, such as (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form; (2) translation by omission of entire idiom; (3) translation by paraphrase; and (4) translation by omission of a play on idiom. The most frequent strategy is translation by paraphrase with 51.8% occurence. Furthermore, domestication is dominating the orientation of the translation

    Drama in Fostering Students’ Speaking Skills: A Systematic Review on Benefits and Problems

    Drama is pedagogy with a fairly complete component that involves the body, mind, emotions, and senses in order to build individual relationships with true-life situations so that being active in language learning is needed by students. This paper will closely explore the benefits and problems of implementing drama during the process of teaching and learning a language. In language teaching, drama has been proposed as an effective way to encourage the students’ speaking skills. Essentially, drama provides more benefits, not only in students’ speaking skills but also in other aspects. However, some problems may arise in the process of drama-based language teaching. By cross-checking and reviewing eclectically from different sources, this paper presents a critical analysis of several empirical works on drama techniques used in the context of language learning. To generalize the notion, drama is indeed precious in language learning. Nevertheless, several problems in its implementation need to be considered to achieve learning objectives properly. The review results showed that some problems that may appear during the implementation of drama were undisciplined in time management, chaotic atmosphere, the usage of the first language (L1), and status at school. Hence, several suggestions are provided as solutions to the drama problems confronted by teachers.Â

    Segmental and Suprasegmental Mispronunciations Made by EFL Learners in Indonesia

    This study reveals segmental and suprasegmental mispronunciations of some words made by Indonesian learners of EFL and their possible causes. This is descriptive qualitative research. The phonological data were elicited by asking the subjects to read loudly while recorded the text that had been prepared to contain words with segmental and suprasegmental phonemes. The data were limited to those words existing in the eliciting text. The records were then transcribed, identified, coded, classified, and interpreted. The possible causes that might have influenced the mispronunciations made by the subjects were unfolded using the contrastive analysis approach and psycholinguistic theories. The study reveals that the mispronunciations in segmental phonemes include vowels and diphthongs, such as /i:/, /ɑ:/, /eɪ/, /oʊ/, consonants /z/, /v/, /ð/, and silent letters w, l, and s. The suprasegmental mispronunciations are in the use of stress on multi-syllabic words. Finally, this study concludes the possible causes that made these errors happen, among others, are interlingual differences, mother tongue interference, shortage of knowledge, and fossilization

    Rethinking the Education Paradigm in Morocco in the Covid-19 Context- Assessment of Resilience Curricula in Higher Education

    The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted mental and emotional health in significant ways, and has worsened the already existing crisis of rising anxiety, chronic stress and depression among the youth. This was particularly marked by the drastic lockdown measures, the incessant stream of bad news, and the sudden shift to online education. Faced with stressors, resilience is a skill-set that aids with adapting, coping, and bouncing back from adversity while maintaining or quickly returning to a relatively healthy psychological functioning. This article therefore aims to explore the past, present and future situation regarding emotional and mental resilience skills in Moroccan higher education curricula. To this end, structured and semi-structured interviews have been conducted with four senior officials at the Ministry of Education in Rabat, Morocco. Furthermore, surveys have been collected from faculty members in eight public universities. The findings reveal that resilience education has not been officially implemented yet in Moroccan universities. However, the national vision shows the rising awareness in the need to shift to a more holistic educational paradigm, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, to better prepare students for the uncertain and fast-changing future.
