    The Symbols of Isolation In Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak

    This research discusses the role of symbols found in Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak. The writers apply New Criticism as the way to find the meaning from those symbols. The writers find three important symbols in the story, they are Melinda's tree painting, mirror, and Melinda's lips and mouth condition. Anderson puts those symbols in the story in order to strengthen the salvation from the isolation as the solid theme for Speak

    Challenges and Problems Faced by EFL Teachers in Teaching Allomorph through Narrative Text

    The fact that teaching English in Indonesia is still driven by textbooks makes not many students have the ability to communicate in English and even they often experience mispronunciation. This study was conducted to find out how to teach allomorphs as a provision to strengthen knowledge of English pronunciation. In addition, this study also seeks to reveal how the challenges faced by EFL teachers in the Allomorph learning process. There are 3 stages that the teacher can do to teach allomorphs through narrative texts; introduction to phonetic symbols, reading the text, and analyzing and practicing the types of allomorphs. From the use of the selected narrative text, it reveals 3 types of allomorphs from 4 types that have been introduced to students in the form of past tense, plural number, and regular possessive. Some of the challenges and problems faced by EFL teachers in teaching English pronunciation, especially allomorphs, is the lack of student motivation to learn. In addition, EFL teachers still hold on to the old philosophy about the lack of importance of learning pronunciation, making this teaching even more difficult. The lack of class hours and the large number of students in EFL classes are also challenges for teachers

    Run-on and Fragment Sentences: An Error Analysis in Indonesian English Learners' Writings

    Run-on and fragment sentences provide clues as to how English learners understand English sentences and how English learners organize information and shape their essays. This research was based on a group case study of run-on and fragment sentences in English college students’ essays, using an English Sentence Completeness approach to investigate how English college students make an error on making a sentence in their English essays and discusses the further pedagogical implications based on the errors pattern found. English college students were found to do run-on in their sentences more often than fragments. They write more than one subject and one verb in a sentence and significantly forget to limit their sentences. The carelessness in punctuation and a period between sentences make the sentence permitted to “run on†into the next. Besides run-on, fragments were also found in students’ essays: Missing subject and verb conditions are significantly found in the students’ sentences. These findings revealed that English college students lack knowledge of how to make complete sentences in ordering information and building up a text’s structure. Therefore the learning process of English writing should be informed of the importance of English sentence completeness in organizing a text and introduce the strategies for avoiding and making less run-on and fragment sentences through practice activities and writing assignments. This research is qualitative descriptive-explorative research where descriptive and explorative are intended to describe and explain the situation based on collected data and facts, which are then analyzed and arranged systematically to get conclusions in detail to be a hypothesis

    Improving Students' Attitudes toward the Study of Literature in EFL Classroom: A Systemic Review

    Several students do not show their positive attitude in studying literature because they are getting difficulties engaging with the materials and the literary texts that are provided by the teachers. Other than that, there are various factors that influence the students not to show their positive attitude to the study of literature. Therefore, this article attempts to elaborate on two main factors that influence student attitudes in studying literature in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom and offer the strategies used to improve student attitudes in studying literature. Two main factors that affect their attitude toward the study of literature are the selection of literary texts and the teaching method used by the teachers. Thus this article elaborates on how to select the appropriate literary text to improve student attitudes toward the study of literature. Also, it offers two possibilities of teaching methods that are used to encourage the students in studying literature. It involves reading response and visual aids. To generalize the idea, in increasing student attitudes in studying literature, it needs creativity and much effort for the teachers. Students also face many difficulties in studying literature in the classroom. Thus, educators should be aware of the problems that arise among the students and provide the appropriate solution to them

    Role Play for Fostering Young Learner's Soft Skill in Speaking English

    This paper is about exploring what and how soft skills can be gained from using a role-playing game while teaching a speaking skill to children. This study is conducted by analyzing and observing data result from other studies related to this research objective. The subject of this research is a young learner average eight to ten years old student of elementary school. The role play referred to in this research is a simple role-play such as acting and playing pretend that young learners can understand without complicated components. They will perform a role play without set dialogue, only with a scenario idea as they will use their ability to conduct the role play. This study was conducted because of the importance of a soft skill that impacts children's ability in using language. This study found that there are better communication skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, decision-making judgment, and boost learner self-confidence in using English as a second language. Communication skills and self-confidence are developing because there is an interaction between speakers in the context of role-play scenarios. Children tend to imprint a lesson that they experience themselves, consequently making them remember their mistake when they speak English in an attempt to have a conversation in communication. Thence this makes students learn from past mistakes and become more fluent in speaking English as a second language that does not sound stiff as a robot, unlike when they only learn from the textbook. Roleplay is fostering children's analytical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skill because role-play gave them a context of how to apply language in a real-life situation. The student will try to think in a logical order and to speak what they want, consequently stimulating their thinking ability in a good way

    Civil War and Ideology Conflict as Seen in Alex Irvine's Transformers: Exodus

    This study discusses civil war and ideology conflict represented in Alex Irvine's Transformers: Exodus. It aims to analyze how the ideological conflict contributes to civil war in the novel and the moral messages that the readers can learn from the narrative. Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony and Terry Eagleton's theory of ideological features are used to examine ideology's role, and the moral-philosophical approach is used to analyze moral values. The findings suggest the existence of three ideologies: the Cybertronian traditions, the Autobots' ideology, and the Decepticons' ideology. In addition, this study finds that the novel contains moral values related to peace, toleration, and diplomacy

    The Absence of Parents and Psychopathic Disorder in Dismissed Movie

    This study aims to discover the psychopath characteristics of the main character, Lucas, as depicted in the movie Dismissed, and investigate how Lucas’ obsession, which makes him a psychopath, is related to the absence of parents. The qualitative descriptive analysis method is used in analyzing the data. Data is collected by watching, understanding, identifying, interpreting, and analyzing data from the Dismissed movie. Thi study uses psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud and psychopathic personality disorder by Robert D Hare. This study reveals that the absence of parents during Lucas’ developmental period can wreak havoc on the manifestation of psychological disturbance in Lucas. Lucas has a psychopathic personality disorder. His psychopathic problem makes him a killer to gain his excessive obsession to get an “A†from his teacher. The writer concludes that Lucas’ psychopathic problem is convincingly connected to parental absence. Lucas experienced imperfect psychosexual development, resulting in fixation at the phallic stage due to the death of his mother and the lack of intense bonding between Lucas and his father as his role model. Lucas becomes a person who has an excessive obsession, has poor behavior control, has no empathy, and has no remorse and guilt. When dealing with trauma and anxiety, Lucas’ ego uses projection as a defense mechanism. He projects the longingness for his mother figure to other women he kills. Therefore, his psychopathic behavior is a means he does to substitute and reduce the anxiety and trauma of parental absence in his life

    “The Wonderful Wizard of OZ”: Building students’ character in ELT through Fantasy Novel

    Fantasy is the one of genre in children's literature that is famous all over the world. However, because of the story that tells about imaginary world, the appearance is not quite considered in ELT classroom especially in building students' character. Therefore, this study was conducted to see character education represented in a fantasy novel that is suggested in curriculum 2013 for ELT in Indonesia. The fantasy novel used in this study was The Wonderful Wizard of OZ written by L. Frank Baum. Every condition and situation faced by the character in every plot of story was analyzed using content analysis. The finding showed that fantasy novel could promote character building through the story by showing it in character's attitude in facing a situation or problem. So, even though it told about imaginary world, but it was closed to real life and great as a source for learning

    Narrative Functions in Burton’s Sleepy Hollow Movie

    Narrative is the primary aspect of literary work. The quality of work is represented by narrative. In prose and drama, they both involve story and characters to present events in narrative. The writer chose to analyze narrative functions because the writer wanted to examine the validity of Propp’s theory which considers character’s action as fundamental element of narrative structure. In this research, the writer aimed to find out the narrative functions by analyzing character’s action and to know how the functions are depicted in the movie of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. The reason of this movie is analyzed since Sleepy Hollow movie had never been analyzed by other researchers. In analysis, the writer used Vladimir Propp’s model since it emphasizes character’s action as fundamental element of narrative structure. This research used formal method which excludes discussions concern with the creator as the main subject of research. the result showed that Sleepy Hollow movie is constructed by 25 functions such as interdiction, violation, reconnaissance, delivery, complicity, villainy, lack, mediation, beginning counteraction, departure, the first function of the donor, the hero’s reaction, provision or receipt of a magical agent, guidance, struggle, initial misfortune or lack is liquidated, return, pursuit, rescue, unrecognized arrival, difficult task, exposure, transfiguration, punishment, and wedding.     Â

    Characterization Analysis of the Main Character in “Hichki†Movie

    Characterization is the author’s effort in presenting the character of the characters. It is made to build and develop the characters in a story. This characterization is related to the attitudes, desires, interests, emotions, and moral principles of the characters. This characterization also suggests the embodiment and development of the characters in the story. The objectives of this research are to analyze the characterization of the main characters in “Hichki†movies. The approach used in this analysis is descriptive qualitative research, the research data are from dialogues between characters in the movie that are linked to character characterization. The results of this research show that Naina Mathur is the main character or central figure in the “Hichki†movie. She is Tourette’s syndrome sufferer. The characterizations are educated woman, always keep the spirit and never give up, have confidence, stands to belief and stick to the principles, protective, optimistic, creative, responsible, and being a good teacher. This movie shows the character of Naina Mathur as a teacher who is rarely found in educational circles. Like teachers who are challenged to guide their students to develop according to their respective talents. Naina Mathur is a central character where her character becomes the essence as well as the beginning until the ending of the story
