Invisible Children: the Face and Reverse of Special Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1958–1990

    Get PDF
Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) was one of the republics of the former Yugoslavia (SFRJ), a state with an established totalitarian regime that kept its subjects under control and imposed a recognized ideology on them. Although it tried to present itself as a country with equal rights for all people, that was not the case. Namely, the example of people with disabilities reveals the double face of the regime. While other republics developed already inherited institutions for the care of children with disabilities, BiH did not even have a higher education institution for the education of specialists for working with children and adults with disabilities until the mid-1990s. Special elementary schools were also rare. In some elementary schools, there were auxiliary departments for children with disabilities. Segregation was highly emphasized and parents often hid their children because of shame and public condemnation. In this paper, I will try to show how the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina treated special education within the state of Yugoslavia. It is obvious that, despite the needs, special education in BiH was underdeveloped. At the higher education institutions that trained future teachers, there was no mention of working with children with disabilities. For the most part, schools solved this issue according to their priorities and possibilities. Although they talked about the importance of health and inclusion in the education of all, the example of this republic shows the opposite. So, it is evident that the ideology of a totalitarian regime in the 20th century misuses the concept of child health. In doing so, such regimes use childcare to publicly promote their ideological intentions and social awareness while the situation in practice testifies otherwise. From the data obtained by researching three pedagogical journals in the period from 1958–1990, it is clear that special education remained somewhere in the corner and that schools or teachers decided by themselves whether or not they would accept these children into their environment. Therefore, the situation in education in BiH, a society that called itself socialistic, often had results that showed the opposite, and this was exactly what was reflected in the field of special education

The first statistical testing of a hypothesis according to John Arbuthnot

    No full text
Statistical testing of hypotheses is one of the important tools of quantitative (not only educational) research. The idea of verifying the hypothesis using a “mathematical model” probably first appeared in the 18th century in John Arbuthnot’s work. The article describes this first testing in historical and mathematical context

School identification of pupils talented for mathematics

The article deals with the issue of education of gifted pupils from the group of underachieving pupils and pupils with double exceptionality. It briefly summarizes theoretical knowledge about the perception of gift in the school environment and about the manifestations of pupils from risk groups. Two case studies illustrate how underachieving gifted pupils and pupils with double exceptionality are at risk and why they are often not identified as gifted at school

Effectiveness factors of small and medium-sized enterprises from the perspective of corporate culture: A case study in Slovakia

To reach business success, a company can use and manage a lot of seemingly inconspicuous and useful tools. One of them is corporate culture. The purpose of the paper is to define the factors that affect business efficiency from the perspective of corporate culture. The Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) was used. For data analysis, the Beta regression method, inductive statistics, and Tukey’s test were used. Based on the research results, it can be stated that there are significant differences in factors that affect the business efficiency of small and medium-sized enterprises in Slovakia from the perspective of corporate culture. The results show that effectiveness factors typical for clan corporate culture, such as teamwork, communication, loyalty, and human resource development, are applied in small enterprises. However, medium-sized enterprises are dominated by a hierarchical corporate culture with an emphasis on regulations, procedures, stability, control, and accuracy of management. It can be concluded that clan corporate culture is the best type of corporate culture for small and medium-sized enterprises in Slovakia. It is recommended to see the success of the enterprise in relation to caring for the people because employees represent a strategic tool in management that can influence the effectiveness of all business processes

Examining climate change awareness and climate-friendly activities of urban residents: A case study in Košice

    Get PDF
As the impact of climate change begins to be felt all around the world, the vulnerability of urban areas due to their population density, high concentration of economic activities and the altered characteristics of the physical environment is becoming increasingly apparent. As a result, cities will play a crucial role in tackling climate change by fostering mitigation activities and managing and coordinating the adaptation process. Research has shown that engagement and awareness among citizens is vital in the promotion of effective adaptation policies, but studies have also drawn attention to the significance of the so-called “awareness-action gap,” the absence of a direct link between awareness and action. This study contributes to the ongoing debate over the awareness-action nexus by discussing the factors that can affect the adaptation and mitigation activities of urban citizens using the Slovak city of Košice as a case study. Data was collected using a survey conducted with local residents as part of the preparations for the city’s first adaptation strategy on climate change. The paper uses a two-step analysis to investigate the socio-economic, psychological and contextual factors associated with climate change awareness and climate-friendly activities. The results of the standard linear regression model indicate that self-assessed vulnerability is a determining factor in both the level of climate change awareness and the likelihood of individuals to take action. In the second step, we find that the factors which influence engagement in climate-friendly activities differ depending on the costs involved in implementing the activities. The exploratory analysis conducted using a machine learning algorithm suggests that the awareness-action nexus may be non-linear in nature. The main findings of this study imply that communication strategies should place a primary emphasis on individuals’ vulnerability to the negative impacts of climate change. The paper contributes to the existing research by providing a case study of a generally under-researched geographical area of Central Europe. In addition, the analysis provides a specific context of urban area and implications for local policymakers, something that has been lacking the in literature looking primarily at data at the country level
