Assessment of mechanical root canal preparation with centric reciprocating or eccentric rotary kinematics: a micro–computed tomographic study
The aim of this study was to compare, using micro–computed tomographic imaging, the preparation of mesial canals of mandibular molars with the Reciproc (VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany) and XP-endo Shaper (FKG, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) systems, evaluating changes in dentin and canal volume, the percentage of untouched walls, the volume of accumulated hard tissue debris, and root canal deviation in the apical third. Twenty-four mandibular molars with 2 mesial root canals and a single foramen were anatomically paired and divided into 2 experimental groups (n = 12) according to the system used. The specimens were scanned before and after preparation with the SkyScan 1176 microtomographic scanner (Bruker-microCT, Kontich, Belgium) at a resolution of 17.42 μm. The resulting data were statistically compared at a significance level of 5% using the Student t test and the Mann-Whitney test.A significant difference was observed in the untouched surface area for the total canal and the cervical and middle thirds, with the lowest untouched surface area in the XP-endo Shaper group (P .05).The XP-endo Shaper touched more walls and left less accumulated hard tissue debris in the root canal system than the Reciproc group. Association between dietary habits and physical function in brazilian and italian older women
The present study investigated and compared the patterns of dietary protein intake and physical function in Brazilian and Italian older women. Seventy-five Brazilian older women were recruited in a community senior center. Fifty-three age-matched Italian older women were selected from participants of the Longevity check-up (Lookup) 7+ study. In both samples, physical performance was evaluated by isometric handgrip strength (IHG) and five-time sit-to-stand (5 × STS) tests, while diet was assessed through 24-h recall. Results indicated that Brazilian women had a higher intake of plant-based protein (52.7% vs. 30.5% kcal), while Italian women consumed greater amounts of animal-derived protein (29.7% vs. 41.5% kcal). In Brazilian women, the binary logistic regression analysis indicated that body weight-adjusted protein consumption was associated with IHG adjusted by body mass index and with 5 × STS performance. In the Italian sample, the intake of isoleucine, leucine, and valine was significantly associated with 5 × STS performance. Our findings indicate that Brazilian and Italian community-dwelling older women show different patterns of protein intake, with higher consumption of plant-based protein in the Brazilian sample and higher ingestion of animal-derived protein in the Italian subgroup. These dietary patterns may differentially impact the relationship between physical function and protein intake observed in Brazilian and Italian older women12

“Association of APOE gene polymorphisms with primary open angle glaucoma in Brazilian patients”
Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a multifactorial disease that affects 65.5 million people worldwide. In addition to the genetic variants already established as indicators of greater risk for POAG, the apolipoprotein (APOE) gene has been studied in some populations, with controversial results. The aim of this study is to investigate the frequency of the genetic variants of APOE in the Brazilian population, and to evaluate the association between these polymorphisms and the risk of POAG. APOE variants (rs429358; rs7412) were genotyped in 402 POAG patients and 401 controls. We evaluated the association between APOE genetic variants and the risk for POAG, as well as the correlation between the requirement of glaucoma surgery and the APOE polymorphisms.Among the three APOE gene isoforms, we found a low frequency of APOE alleles ε2 (7.34%) and ε4 (11.76%), but a high frequency of ε3 (80.88%) in our population. When compared to ε3ε3 reference genotype, ε2 allele-carriers (OR = 1.516; p-value = 0.04) and ε2ε3 genotype (OR = 1.655; p-value = 0.02) were associated with a greater risk for POAG. An additive genetic model confirmed the influence of the ε2 allele in the risk of POAG in this sample of the Brazilian population (OR = 1.502; p-value = 0.04).
