Characterization of entomogen galls from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil
In this paper we performed a study of occurrence and characterization of entomogen galls from natural vegetation areas in Mato Grosso do Sul. We surveyed natural areas of four biomes from Mato Grosso do Sul State: Pantanal (Corumba), Atlantic Forest (Bodoquena), Cerrado (Aquidauana), and Chaco (Porto Murtinho). We identified 186 morphotypes of galls in 115 host plant species from 35 families and 73 genera. The richest families were Fabaceae (N = 34), Sapindaceae (N= 24), Bignoniaceae (N= 17), and Myrtaceae (N=15). Fifty morphotypes of insects (27%) were found in galls of 38 host plants, 78% of which belongs to Diptera, 10% to Hymenoptera, and the other 12% are divided among Hemiptera, Thysanoptera, Coleoptera, and Lepidoptera. In this study, the geographic distribution of gall morphotypes associated to the cecidomyiids Youngomyia pouteriae Maia, 2004, and Trotteria quadridentata Maia, 2004 (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae), and the wasp Mononeuron duguetiae Fischer, 1981 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Doryctinae) are expanded to the localities sampled in MS. In addition, four genera and 24 species of plants were recorded for the first time as hosts to entomogen galls. Crystallization and jamming in narrow fluidized beds
A fluidized bed is basically a suspension of granular material by an ascending fluid in a tube, and it has a rich dynamics that includes clustering and pattern formation. When the ratio between the tube and grain diameters is small, different behaviors can be induced by high confinement effects. Some unexpected and curious behaviors that we investigate in this paper are the crystallization and jamming of grains in liquids with velocities higher than those for incipient fluidization, supposed to maintain the grains fluidized. In our experiments, performed in a vertical tube of transparent material, different grains, water velocities, resting times, and velocity decelerations were used. An analysis of the bed evolution based on image processing shows that, after a decreasing flow that reaches a velocity still higher than that for incipient fluidization, grains become organized in lattice structures of high compactness, where they are trapped though with small fluctuations. These structures are initially localized and grow along time, in a similar manner as happens in phase transitions and glass formation. After a certain time, if the liquid velocity is slightly increased, jamming occurs, with grains being completely blocked and their fluctuation disappearing. We show that different lattice structures appear depending on the grain type. On-line solid phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of codeine in human plasma
A specific LC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for automated determination of codeine in human plasma, using on-line solid phase extraction (SPE) system coupled with positive ion electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. The method allowed plasma direct injection onto cartridge without sample pre-treatment. Total analysis time per run was 3 min, allowing high-throughput for codeine determination. SPE on-line along a monolithic column (Chromolith Performance RP-18e, 100 mm x 4.6 mm) demonstrated to be highly effective in terms of backpressure, separation speed and peak asymmetry. Calibration curves range was linear 5.0-200 ng mL(-1). Method showed an excellent intra-day and inter-day precision ranged from 2.34 to 7.25% (CV%) as well as great intra-day and inter-day accuracy, ranging from 97.64 to 110% (RE%). Identification of specific inhibitors of Trypanosoma cruzi malic enzyme isoforms by Target-Based HTS
Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease. The lack of an efficient and safe treatment supports the research into novel metabolic targets, with the malic enzyme (ME) representing one such potential candidate. T. cruzi expresses a cytosolic (TcMEc) and a mitochondrial (TcMEm) ME isoform, with these activities functioning to generate NADPH, a key source of reducing equivalents that drives a range of anabolic and protective processes. To identify specific inhibitors that target TcMEs, two independent high-throughput screening strategies using a diversity library containing 30,000 compounds were employed. IC50 values of 262 molecules were determined for both TcMEs, as well as for three human ME isoforms, with the inhibitors clustered into six groups according to their chemical similarity. The most potent hits belonged to a sulfonamide group that specifically target TcMEc. Moreover, several selected inhibitors of both TcMEs showed a trypanocidal effect against the replicative forms of T. cruzi. Are iron chelates suitable to perform photo-fenton at neutral pH for secondary effluent treatment?
There have been concerns about which iron chelate is most suitable for application in the photo-Fenton process as well as the fate of these chelates after application. In this study, five chelating agents, i.e. citric acid (CA), oxalic acid (OA), ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), representing the most used iron chelates were assessed for suitability of application in homogeneous photo-Fenton-like process at pH of 7. The efficiency of the iron chelates were assessed in the disinfection of secondary effluent. The results for the disinfection and bacteria regrowth followed the order EDTA>OA>NTA>CA>OA. All the iron chelates were observed to have increased the COD of the effluent with EDDS having the highest COD contribution. The ability of the chelates to remove aromaticity was measured by the UV254 measurement. The efficiency of the chelates to remove aromaticity decreased in the order CA>EDDS>NTA>CA>OA. Acupuncture effect on pain, mouth opening limitation and on the energy meridians in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction: a randomized controlled trial
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), recognized as the most common conditions of chronic orofacial pain, have a multifactorial etiology. Acupuncture can help to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with these conditions, because it can rebalance the energy (Qi) circulating in the meridians. The aim of the study was to verify the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating the pain; mouth opening limitation, and energy circulating in the meridians of patients with TMD of muscular or mixed origin. This was a controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical trial conducted at the Piracicaba Dental School (FOP/Unicamp), in Piracicaba SP, Brazil. The Treatment Group received acupuncture with real penetration of the needle, and the Placebo Group received a sham treatment without needle penetration. The acupoints used were: ST6, ST7, SI18, GV20, GB20, BL10, and LI4, during treatment performed for four weekly sessions. The TMD and mouth opening were evaluated according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC). The measurements of the energy at the meridians were performed by the Ryodoraku method, before and after acupuncture in all of the sessions in both groups. The results showed no decrease in pain in the Treatment Group when compared with the Placebo Group (p = 0.2261). There was no increase in the oral opening limit in the Treatment Group compared with the Placebo Group (p > 0.05). Regarding the energy levels, after acupuncture, there was a decrease in Yang energy in all sessions (p < 0.05), in both groups, however, only real acupuncture was effective in maintaining the Yin energy average throughout the four sessions, with significant difference between groups (p = 0.0198). In conclusion, volunteers with TMD presented a pattern of energy deficiency and the most prevalent imbalance patterns identified were in the meridians coupled to the kidney and bladder, and in the Shao Yin (heart/kidney) and Shao Yang (triple energizer/gall bladder) energetic planes. The acupuncture points used were equally effective in reducing pain in both groups; increasing the unassisted mouth opening limitation without pain in the Treatment Group, and were also effective in preserving the Yin energy in the Treatment Group.
