A unified model for accelerating unsupervised iterative re‐ranking algorithms
Despite the continuous advances in image retrieval technologies, performing effective and efficient content‐based searches remains a challenging task. Unsupervised iterative re‐ranking algorithms have emerged as a promising solution and have been widely used to improve the effectiveness of multimedia retrieval systems. Although substantially more efficient than related approaches based on diffusion processes, these re‐ranking algorithms can still be computationally costly, demanding the specification and implementation of efficient big multimedia analysis approaches. Such demand associated with the significant potential for parallelization and highly effective results achieved by recently proposed re‐ranking algorithms creates the need for exploiting efficiency vs effectiveness trade‐offs. In this article, we introduce a class of unsupervised iterative re‐ranking algorithms and present a model that can be used to guide their implementation and optimization for parallel architectures. We also analyze the impact of the parallelization on the performance of four algorithms that belong to the proposed class: Contextual Spaces, RL‐Sim, Contextual Re‐ranking, and Cartesian Product of Ranking References. The experiments show speedups that reach up to 6.0×, 16.1×, 3.3×, and 7.1× for each algorithm, respectively. Validação dos dados de precipitação estimados pelo TRMM, para o estado do Paraná, e sua contribuição ao monitoramento agrometeorológico
A obtenção de dados agrometeorológicos podem ser feitos por meio de redes de estações meteorológicas que registram dados atmosféricos. Porém, dada as dimensões do país, ainda não há uma rede de estações com cobertura suficiente para atender esta necessidade, principalmente em nível local. Estimativas de precipitação por satélite têm sido propostas em vários trabalhos científicos, contribuindo como uma ferramenta importante para a consistência dos dados climatológicos. As estimativas espaciais de precipitação podem se constituir numa ferramenta extremamente útil. Essas estimativas quando comparadas com valores pontuais medidos em superfície, mostram que podem fornecer uma boa noção da distribuição espacial das chuvas. Sob este contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho das estimativas de precipitação pluvial do satélite TRMM, para o estado do Paraná - Brasil, e verificar a confiabilidade dos dados em relação aos dados observados em superfície (estações meteorológicas convencionais do SIMEPAR), para o período de 2000 a 2010. Os resultados mostraram que as estimativas de precipitação do satélite TRMM podem ser utilizadas como uma fonte alternativa de informações sobre a escassez de dados de estações de superfície323301316The obtaining of agro-meteorological data can be made by weather stations that record atmospheric data. However, with the large size of the country, there are no weather stations with sufficient coverage to meet this need, especially at the local level. Satellite estimates of precipitation has been proposed in several scientific, contributing as an important tool for the consistency of climate data. The spatial estimates of precipitation can be an extremely useful tool, and these estimates, when compared with point values measured in the soil, provide a good idea of the spatial distribution of rainfall. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of rainfall estimates from TRMM satellite launched with the specific purpose of estimating rainfall in the tropics, to the state of Parana, and verify the reliability of the data in relation to the data observed in surface (SIMEPAR conventional weather stations.) for the period 2000-2010. Alzheimer's disease detection through whole-brain 3D-CNN MRI
The projected burden of dementia by Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a looming healthcare crisis as the population of most countries grows older. Although there is currently no cure, it is possible to treat symptoms of dementia. Early diagnosis is paramount to the development and success of interventions, and neuroimaging represents one of the most promising areas for early detection of AD. We aimed to deploy advanced deep learning methods to determine whether they can extract useful AD biomarkers from structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) and classify brain images into AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and cognitively normal (CN) groups. We tailored and trained Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) on sMRIs of the brain from datasets available in online databases. Our proposed method, ADNet, was evaluated on the CADDementia challenge and outperformed several approaches in the prior art. The method's configuration with machine-learning domain adaptation, ADNet-DA, reached 52.3% accuracy. Contributions of our study include devising a deep learning system that is entirely automatic and comparatively fast, presenting competitive results without using any patient's domain-specific knowledge about the disease. We were able to implement an end-to-end CNN system to classify subjects into AD, MCI, or CN groups, reflecting the identification of distinctive elements in brain images. Towards a broad understanding of innovation and its importance for innovation policy
This paper considers the changes in the concept of innovation during recent decades and the degree to which such changes have been of significance to innovation policy. We observe that: (1) the notion of innovation in research, statistics, and policy is becoming increasingly broad; (2) while this broader notion is conceptually more adequate for understanding the complexity of innovation activity, it also makes it increasingly difficult to gain a clear, unambiguous picture of innovation activity; (3) policy concepts built upon this extended understanding of innovation are becoming more complex in terms of governance capacities, coordination capabilities, and evidence-based policy formulation. Hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias: executive summary of a consensus document from the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) and ESC Council on Hypertension, endorsed by the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS), and Sociedad Latinoamericana de Estimulación Cardíaca y Electrofisiología (SOLEACE)
Hypertension (HTN) is a common cardiovascular risk factor leading to heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, peripheral artery disease and chronic renal failure. Hypertensive heart disease can manifest as many types of cardiac arrhythmias, most commonly being atrial fibrillation (AF). Both supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias may occur in HTN patients, especially in those with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), CAD, or HF. In addition, high doses of thiazide diuretics commonly used to treat HTN, may result in electrolyte abnormalities (e.g. hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia), contributing further to arrhythmias, while effective blood pressure control may prevent the development of the arrhythmias such as AF. In recognizing this close relationship between HTN and arrhythmias, the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Council on Hypertension convened a Task Force, with representation from the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS), and Sociedad Latinoamericana de Estimulación Cardíaca y Electrofisiología (SOLEACE), with the remit of comprehensively reviewing the available evidence and publishing a joint consensus document on HTN and cardiac arrhythmias, and providing up-to-date consensus recommendations for use in clinical practice. The ultimate judgment on the care of a specific patient must be made by the healthcare provider and the patient in light of all individual factors presented. Naphthochromenes and related constituents from the tubers of Sinningia allagophylla
Chemical investigation of the tubers of Sinningia allagophylla led to the isolation of two new chromenes, (2S)-12-hydroxylapachenole (1) and (3R)-3,4-dihydro-3-hydroxy-4-oxo-8-methoxylapachenole (2), and three new dimeric chromenes, allagophylldimers A-C (3-5). Condensation of macrocyclic polyketides produced by Penicillium sp. DRF2 with mercaptopyruvate represents a new fungal detoxification pathway
Application of a refined procedure of experimental design and chemometric analysis to improve the production of curvularin-related polyketides by a marine-derived Penicillium sp. DRF2 resulted in the isolation and identification of cyclothiocurvularins 6-8 and cyclosulfoxicurvularins 10 and 11, novel curvularins condensed with a mercaptolactate residue. Two additional new curvularins, 3 and 4, are also reported. The structures of the sulfur-bearing curvularins were unambiguously established by analysis of spectroscopic data and by X-ray diffraction analysis. Analysis of stable isotope feeding experiments with [U-(C3N)-C-13-N-15]-L-cysteine confirmed the presence of the 2-hydroxy-3-mercaptopropanoic acid residue in 6-8 and the oxidized sulfoxide in 10 and 11. Cyclothiocurvularins A (6) and B (7) are formed by spontaneous reaction between 10,11-dehydrocurvularin (2) and mercaptopyruvate (12) obtained by transamination of cysteine. High ratios of [U-(C3N)-C-13-N-15]-L-cysteine incorporation into cyclothiocurvularin B (7), the isolation of two diastereomers of cyclothiocurvularin, the lack of cytotoxicity of cyclothiocurvularin B (7) and its methyl ester (8), and the spontaneous formation of cyclothiocurvularins from 10,11-dehydrocurvularin and mercaptopyruvate provide evidence that the formation of cyclothiocurvularin may well correspond to a 10,11-dehydrocurvularin detoxification process by Penicillium sp.
