Recommendations for the future of recreational fisheries to prepare the social‐ecological system to cope with change
This paper presents conclusions and recommendations that emerged from the 7th World Recreational Fishing Conference (WRFC) held in Campinas, Brazil in September 2014. Based on the recognition of the immense social and economic importance of recreational fisheries coupled with weaknesses in robust information about these fisheries in many areas of the world, particularly in many economies in transition, it is recommended to increase effort to build effective governance arrangements and improve monitoring and assessment frameworks in data-poor situations. Moreover, there is a need to increase interdisciplinary studies that will foster a systematic understanding of recreational fisheries as complex adaptive social-ecological systems. Activation of PPAR-γ induces macrophage polarization and reduces neutrophil migration mediated by heme oxygenase 1
Natural or synthetic ligands for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) represent an interesting tool for pharmacological interventions to treat inflammatory conditions. In particular, PPAR-γ activation prevents pain and inflammation in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by decreasing cytokine release and stimulating the synthesis of endogenous opioids. The goal of this study was to clarify whether PPAR-γ activation induces macrophage polarization, inhibiting inflammatory cytokine release and leukocyte recruitment. In addition, we investigated the involvement of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) in downstream events after PPAR-γ activation. Our results demonstrate that PPAR-γ activation ablates cytokine release by Bone Marrow-Derived Macrophages (BMDM) in vitro. 15d-PGJ2 induces the PPAR-γ heterodimer activation from rat macrophages, with macrophage polarization from M1-like cells toward M2-like cells. This response is mediated through HO-1. PPAR-γ activation diminished neutrophil migration induced by carrageenan, which was also HO-1 dependent. Ca2+/calmodulin expression did not change after PPAR-γ activation indicating that is not required for the activation of the intracellular L-arginine/NO/cGMP/K+ATP channel pathway. In summary, the anti-inflammatory actions induced by PPAR-γ activation involve macrophage polarization. Sequential equality-constrained optimization for nonlinear programming
A novel idea is proposed for solving optimization problems with equality constraints and bounds on the variables. In the spirit of sequential quadratic programming and sequential linearly-constrained programming, the new proposed approach approximately solves, at each iteration, an equality-constrained optimization problem. The bound constraints are handled in outer iterations by means of an augmented Lagrangian scheme. Global convergence of the method follows from well-established nonlinear programming theories. Birefringence of collagen fibres in rat calcaneal tendons treated with acupuncture during three phases of healing
Birefringence is an optical anisotropy that is investigated by polarisation microscopy, and has been valuable for the study of the oriented organisation of collagen fibres in tendons. However, the application of this technology to evaluate the effect of different acupuncture points during tendon healing has not yet been described. Objectives To evaluate the concentration of non-collagenous proteins (NCP) and birefringence in rat calcaneal tendons following injury during the three different phases of healing: inflammatory (7th day), proliferative (14th day), and remodelling (21st day). Methods Tendons of 120 Wistar rats were tenotomised and left untreated (teno group, n=24), treated with manual acupuncture at ST36 (ST36 group, n=24), BL57 (BL57 group, n=24) or ST36+BL57 (SB group, n=24), or treated with electroacupuncture at ST36+BL57 (EA group, n=24). Tendon samples were collected at 7, 14 and 21 days after injury (n=8 per group). NCP concentrations were measured using the Bradford method (n=4 each) and birefringence was examined using polarisation microscopy and image analysis (n=4 each). Comparison was also made with healthy (non-tenotomised) tendons in a subgroup of rats (n=4 each). Results Manual acupuncture at ST36 and BL57 increased molecular organisation of collagen fibres on day 14 and 21 after injury. Isolated use of BL57 and ST36 also increased collagen fibre organisation when examined on day 14 and 21, respectively. No significant increase in NCP concentration was observed in any of the treated tenotomised groups. The future of screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment in adolescent primary care: research directions and dissemination challenges
Purpose of reviewScreening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) offers a practical, integrated model for addressing substance use in primary care settings. This review provides an update of the research on SBIRT for adolescents in primary care, examines current dissemination challenges and suggests future research directions.Recent findingsA number of brief screening tools for adolescents have been developed and tested relative to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) substance use disorders. Computerized previsit screening promotes standardization and is a more time-efficient alternative to provider interview. The adolescent brief intervention literature is growing, particularly with respect to technology-based tools, but is still limited, with evidence greatest for alcohol, and for motivational enhancement therapy interventions. Increasing SBIRT implementation in pediatric primary care remains a challenge. Using nonphysician behavioral health providers to deliver SBIRT, and embedding a screener and decision support tool in electronic medical record systems are strategies being investigated to promote SBIRT implementation.SummarySubstance use begins in adolescence, and pediatric SBIRT could help to achieve a population-level reduction of substance use-related harms.
