CHAPTER 9: SOLVOLYSIS AND BIOLOGICAL RECYCLING OF COMPOSITES. OBTAINING RAW MATERIALS
This chapter analyses the chemical recycling technique by solvolysis and by biological recycling, explaining that it involves breaking the polymer chain by using reactive solvents, temperature, catalysts, and pressure in the first case, and enzymes and microorganisms in the second. The situation of both technologies is shown, i.e. the operating parameters found in the literature for each type of polymer. In the case of solvolysis, the companies that are currently commercializing this technology are listed; there are still no companies for the case of biological recycling as its technology readiness level (TRL) is lower than for solvolysis. The chapter ends with recommendations for future developments for both types of solvolysis

Habitatge i estat del benestar
Housing is a basic pillar of the welfare state, as it is a necessary condition for the development of other fundamental rights, such as privacy, education, human dignity or health. The global financial crisis of 2007 continues to have a serious impact on the citizens of our country, which is now combined with the effects arising from the COVID19 (2020-2021) and inflation (2022) crises. Indeed, the constant process of urbanization, couple with the process of emptying rural space and the lack of social and affordable housing, has contributed to making housing unaffordable in the main urban areas of our country to the less well-off families. Multilevel public housing policies, however, have been erratic in recent years without providing real alternatives to home ownership (from which young people and low-income families are excluded) or tenancy (which is not a truly desirable alternative to home ownership), while attempts to increase the stock of social and affordable housing (for example, through expropriations or penalties for owners of empty homes) have had limited success. This has led to a progressive precariousness of tenure and the increase (and, even, its promotion by public authorities) of situations of hidden homelessness, such as squatting, shared housing, overcrowding or substandardhousing, without the State Housing Law 12/2023 having implemented any structural measures to cover the existing gaps in the development of the right to decent and adequate housing, a function that corresponds to public authorities and not to private owners, which they are seeing their right to private property gradually being eroded. This article analyzes this problem and possible structural solutions to the housing problem, such as the territorial cohesion or the diversification of housing tenures
Financial analysis for sustainable management of private forests. Example of Aleppo pine.
This paper presents a methodology for a financial and sustainable valuation of business forest management that also allows to improve the incentives to enhance public policies for prevention and conservation, with application to the Catalan case study of the Aleppo pine forests.
Every summer and more recently due to the long drought, the situation of Catalan forests is not good, with criticism for the results of public policies and for the abandonment or low intensity of forest management because there is a low proportion that are planned or certified for both environmental and economic sustainability, despite its economic and political importance.
A paradigmatic case could be the Aleppo pine forests, one of the most representative of Catalonia, both for being a Mediterranean variety and for its extension, since it spreads easily through the open areas and its pyrophilic characteristic makes the fire also facilitates its "colonization". It is a type of forest that tends to be unmanaged and unexploited, despite its representativeness (almost 30% of the Catalan private forest area), although there are studies to help the sustainable management of these forests [1] and detected its potential benefit [2, 3]. However, the economic conclusions of these studies and the private maximization of public subsidies have led to a preference for non-exploitation, with perverse effects on fire prevention policies and protection and conservation of mature forests. However, with a broader view, especially from a financial analysis perspective [4, 5], it is possible to show both the economic viability of its business management, not only in contexts of very favorable prices, as well as the improvement of the effectiveness of public policies with stimuli is feasible if it is not based on the concept of immediate economic utility and other elements linked to sustainable finance are considered [6]. However, the results could be more ambitious in the recommendations of public instruments if there were a greater detail of the type of private forest owners in Catalonia as in other European cases [7]
Renewable energy development: Current landscape, impacts, and goals
The expansion of renewable energies, crucial for reducing emissions and transitioning to a decarbonized energy sector, has broad implications. We study how large-scale renewable energy, particularly wind and solar, impacts wholesale electricity prices, carbon emissions, and market competition. After reviewing current trends in renewable adoption, we focus on the Iberian electricity market. Using the methodology of Petersen, Reguant, and Segura (2024), we analyze impacts on prices and emissions on detailed hourly data from the wholesale electricity market for 2016 to 2022. Results show that a GWh increase in wind or solar generation reduces CO2 emissions between 200 and 300 tons, and prices by an average of 2e/MWh and 4e/MWh, respectively. By examining the evolution of traditional companies’ market shares, we show that as renewable penetration increases, market concentration decreases. The study is complemented by discussing local effects of renewable developments, and challenges to increasing renewable development such as cannibalization, volatility, and intermittency
