Violation of Moral Values in Bernard Shaw’s "The Doctor’s Dilemma"
Get PDFThe Doctor’s Dilemma is known as a tragic play which has become a success and has been reproduced several times. This play has moral values concealed within it. This study aims to find out the moral actions, the reason for Bernard Shaw’s skeptical perception towards physicians, and to learn the circumstances of medical treatment in the early 20th century by analyzing the preface, dialogues, and stage directions in the play. This study basically adopts a combination of mimetic and expressive approaches which regard The Doctor’s Dilemma as the expression of Shaw’s idea and portraits of medical and social life in early 20th century. The analysis is focused on the violation of medical ethics and social norms because they are the dominant in the play. The results of the analysis are the failure of the physician characters in the play to keep their oath as medical attendants because they violate five of eight general duties based on the medical ethic. Then, it is also found out that several characters do not obey the social norm, such as being dishonest, and doing some actions to pursue their personal benefits
Sentence Fragments in the Narration of the Novel "The Hunger Games"
Get PDFThe use of sentence fragments is generally discouraged in good English writing because they lack one or more essential components of a sentence, namely a subject and/or a predicate, and thus are grammatically unacceptable. However in fiction writing, the use of sentence fragments is not only quite common in dialogue, but in narration as well. The present study analyses sentence fragments in the narration of the first novel of the young-adult science-fiction trilogy The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins, to investigate the types of fragments employed in the novel and their classification based on syntactic structure in the form of dependent-clause fragments and phrase fragments. The sentence fragments were further analysed for their use based on the context of their preceding sentences. The use of sentence fragments in the novel basically serves the function of creating emphasis or stressing important points in the story

Using the expressive approach, these poems are studied and analyzed to reveal Angelou’s ideas and perspective of women’s sexuality. In contrast to Angelou, the women in her poems are very confident about themselves. They accept their physical traits, proud of the way they look, and manage to make it their strong point, defining themselves as very strong, confident women. Through her poems, Angelou represents the idea of sexuality completely the opposite of what she was like in her younger years

The objective of this research is to study Maya Angelou‟s search of identity which is depicted through the poem.This article uses an expressive approach because this approach is the most suitable for learning the poet‟s perspective on woman identity through her works. The speaker tries to prove that identity is an important part of her qualities that must be maintained.In this poem the speaker indicates that she becomes a woman who is more confident and proud. Participle as Seen in The Jakarta Post Headings
Get PDFThis paper discusses the usage of participle as seen in The Jakarta Post Headings. The Jakarta Post is considered as a representative newspaper especially for Non Native English Language Learners for it is mostly written by Indonesian journalists using good standard of English. The data of this research are taken from The Jakarta Post edition September 6 until October 6, 2012. The headings are classified based on the type of participle they contained. Afterwards, they are analyzed based on their context in order to figure out the meaning they might contain. Lastly, this paper talks about the prevalence of the participle in The Jakarta Post headings which may reflect the preference of participles used by Indonesian authors in expressing their idea in English. As the result, this paper points out the 5 patterns of present participle, and 6 patterns of past participle used in The Jakarta Post, their meaning, and their frequency
The Translation of Idioms in Rowling’s "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" into Indonesian
Get PDFThis study analyzes the idioms and its translation strategies used in novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. RThe rsearcher classifies the translation strategies by using accuracy analysis. The result of this research shows that there are three strategies used by the Indonesian translator. The first strategy is idiom to idiom, which means transferring idioms in English into idioms in Indonesian. This method is used when two idioms, in both English and Indonesian, contain the same form and meaning. Second method is paraphrase, which means transferring idioms in English directly into its real meaning in Indonesian. This strategy is the most frequently used considering the fact that it is very difficult to find idioms in Indonesian that has the same meaning and form with the idioms in English. The third method is literal translation. In some cases, idioms in English can be literally translated. This kind of case is specifically occurs when an idiom happens to be part of a dialogue or informal sentence

MATERIALISM AS SEEN IN THE BLACK TULIP BY ALEXANDER DUMAS
Get PDFThis study aims to observe the Materialism among the main characters in Alexandre Dumas’ novel, The Black Tulip. In the research process, the writer finds the data by reading books which related to the topic as well as the through the internet.This study basically adopts “Dynamic Structuralism” which includes three elements; the reader, the work, and the reality. The method of research is conducted through library research, with The Black Tulip as the primary data, and the references that support the analysis as the secondary data.The result of this study shows that the materialism exists in everyone. People need money in order to support their life. Money is indeed important and it is employed as the parameter of success in some aspects of life. However, the level of materialism in every single person is different. This paper shows how significant a black tulip is for certain main characters, including the ways they treat it. It is also the symbol of sadness in the Netherlands in 1672-1673 which was identical with the dark age. Besides, it is also as the symbol of Rosa, the prison keeper daughter who helps Van Baerle in revealing the truth over the black tulip
