Ivermectin as an adjunct treatment for hospitalized adult COVID-19 patients: A randomized multi-center clinical trial
Objective: To evaluate different doses of ivermectin in adult patients
with mild COVID-19 and to evaluate the effect of ivermectin on
mortality and clinical consequences.
Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled,
multicenter clinical trial was performed at five hospitals. A total
of 180 mild hospitalized patients with COVID-19 confirmed by
PCR or chest image tests were enrolled and allocated to six arms
including hydroxychloroquine 200 mg twice per day, placebo
plus hydroxychloroquine 200 mg twice per day, single dose
ivermectin (200 µg/kg), three low interval doses of ivermectin
(200, 200, 200 µg/kg), single dose ivermectin (400 µg/kg), and
three high interval doses of ivermectin (400, 200, 200 µg/kg).
The primary endpoint of this trial was all-cause of mortality or
clinical recovery. The radiographic findings, hospitalization and
low O2 saturation duration, and hematological variables of blood
samples were analyzed.
Results: A total of 16.7% (5/30) and 20.0% (6/30) patients died
in arms treated with hydroxychloroquine 200 mg twice per day
and placebo plus hydroxychloroquine 200 mg twice per day,
respectively, and a reduction in mortality rate in patients
receiving ivermectin treatment to 0%, 10%, 0% and 3.3% for
arms 1-4 were observed. Risk of mortality was also decreased
about 15% in the ivermectin treated arms.
Conclusions: Ivermectin as an adjunct reduces the rate of mortality,
time of low O2 saturation, and duration of hospitalization in adult
COVID-19 patients. The improvement of other clinical parameters
shows that ivermectin, with a wide margin of safety, had a high
therapeutic effect on COVID-19
The Association Between Matrix Metalloproteinases-9-1562 C/T Polymorphism and Lung Cancer Susceptibility: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Introduction: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc dependent proteinase. Several studies have reported the association
between the single nucleotide polymorphisms(C/T) -1562 in the MMP-9 promoter and the risk of cancer. In this study we decided to carry out a
comprehensive meta-analysis to obtain a reasonable result about the association between this polymorphism and the risk of lung cancer.
Materials and Methods: A complete literature review was conducted within the databases of ISI Web of Knowledge, google scholar and PubMed
for studies on lung cancer published from 2002 to 2018. A meta-analysis was conducted which included more than 3000 case and control
subjects. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used for dominant, recessive and co-dominant MMP-9 genotypes to
assess the strength of the association.
Results: Analysis indicated no significant association between MMP-9-1562C/T polymorphism and the risk of lung cancer, dominant model;
[CT+TT/CC]: OR=0.972, 95% CI=0.811–1.164, recessive model [CC+CT/TT] OR= 1.027, 95% CI=0.651–1.618 and co-dominant model [TT/
CC] OR=0.983, 95% CI=0.550–1.755.
Conclusions: No association was observed between the MMP9-1562 C/T polymorphism and the incidence of lung cancer. Meta-analysis
demonstrated that this polymorphism can’t serve as a diagnostic marker for lung cancer
Effect of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing on death anxiety of gastrointestinal cancer patients in Qazvin Hospital in 2018: A randomized clinical trial
Introduction: Death anxiety is one of the most common problems in cancer patients. It is also possible to treat
death anxiety by the method of desensitization through eye movements and reprocessing. The aim of this study was
to investigate the effect of desensitization with eye movement and reprocessing on anxiety of death in patients with
gastrointestinal cancer.
Materials and Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial in which 66 patients with gastrointestinal
cancer in Qazvin hospital in 2019 (Irtan) were selected by convenience sampling method. In order to assign it into
two groups of 33 test and control individuals, 4 random block methods were used.The experimental group received 8
min sessions of 45-90 min of allergic desensitization education. After educating the experimental group, the same
treatment was done for the control¬ group. Demographic questionnaires and Templar death anxiety questionnaires
were used for data collection.
Results: The results showed that in the control group the mean score of anxiety increased from 50.81±66 5.66 to
52.1±3.88, which was not statistically significant (P=0.33). However, in the experimental group the mean scores of
anxiety before intervention were 50.66±5.07, which was significantly reduced by 46.09±3 3.6 after intervention
(P<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the results, desensitization using eye movements and reprocessing can be used as an
effective method to reduce death anxiety in patients with gastrointestinal cancer

The Prevalence of Clostridium difficile and Clostridium perfringens in Minced and Ground Beef in Iran
ABSTRACT: In this study, due to the importance of human societies, the prevalence of Clostridium difficile and
Clostridium perfringens in minced and ground beef was investigated in Qazvin city, Iran. All samples were collected randomly by sampling method. The number of samples taken was estimated based on statistical methods and according to previous studies. Clostridium difficile moxalactam norfloxacin (CDMN) culture media was used to
isolate Clostridium difficile and TCS Agar and TPGY culture media was used for Clostridium perfringens. After
isolation, a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test was used to confirm the species diagnosis. According to the results, 21.26% of all samples were infected with these two bacteria. The prevalence of Clostridium perfringens (18.04%) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than Clostridium difficile (3.22%). Given the results and the pathogenicity of Clostridium species, especially Clostridium difficile and Clostridium perfringens, special attention should be paid to the methods reducing the contamination of these pathogenic bacteria in raw food
Evolution of antigen‐specific immune responses in cutaneous leishmaniasis patients
Aims: Despite immunization appearing to be the most appropriate strategy for long-term control
of the vector-borne leishmaniases, no sustainable vaccine is currently available against any form
of leishmaniasis. We therefore evaluated, in the context of vaccine antigen candidates, antigenspecific immune response at various stages of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Methods and results:
Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) isolated from healthy volunteers and CL patients
(caused by either Leishmania major or L tropica) were incubated with crude Leishmania proteins
(soluble Leishmania antigen; SLA), single recombinant proteins (TSA, LeIF, LmSTI1) or chimeric
fusion proteins (LEISH-F2 and LEISH-F3). The concentrations of immune modulatory cytokines
were then determined. While we did not detect appreciable antigen-specific IL-5 secretion, SLA
induced secretion of interleukin (IL)-10 in cultures from early active lesion CL patients and even
from healthy individuals. Conversely, interferon (IFN)-γ responses to SLA and recombinant
proteins followed a similar pattern, developing only in the late active CL lesion phase. Once
established, antigen-specific IFN-γ responses persisted in cured CL patients. Conclusion:
Together, our results provide further insight into the development of immune responses during CL
and further validate the selection of LEISH-F2 and LEISH-F3 as vaccine antigen candidates
Role of leptin in febrile urinary tract infection
Background: Leptin is a hormone that plays an important role in human health against infections. Some studies have reported
that leptin acts as a reactant phase marker in some infectious diseases. The role of leptin in febrile urinary tract infection (UTI) has
not been adequately evaluated.
Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the role of serum leptin in febrile UTI in children.
Methods: Thirty-nine febrile UTI patients were compared with 40 healthy children for the serum leptin level. Serum leptin was
measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. The results were compared between the groups.
Results: Median (IQR) of serum leptin in the case and control groups was 2 ng/mL and 0.6 ng/mL, respectively. A significant difference
was observed between the groups in the serum leptin level (P = 0.001). No significant difference was observed between cystitis
and acute pyelonephritis patients in the serum leptin level. The correlation analysis showed no significant association between the
serum leptin level and acute-phase reactant markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (r =
-0.13 and P = 0.41; r = -0.15 and P = 0.36, respectively).
Conclusions: The present study showed that although serum leptin increases in febrile UTI, this increase is not correlated with Creactive
protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Also, this marker cannot discriminate between cystitis and acute pyelonephritis
