Royal jelly accelerates healing of acetate induced gastric ulcers in male rats
Aim: This study examined the healing potential of royal jelly on the acetic acid induced wounds healing in male rat’s gastric mucosa.
Background: Scientific reports suggest that, bee products can help in the wounds healing.
Methods: 96 adult male Wistar rats were divided into in 4 groups as follows: control, omeprazole 20 mg/kg, and royal jelly 50 and
200 mg/kg). Wound was induced in stomach mucosa of each rat with 100% acetic acid. Samples groups received omeprazole or royal
jelly from 1st to 14th day after acetic ulcer induction. Gastric ulcer healing and histopathological parameters were evaluated on 4, 7,
10, 15th days after ulceration. Both descriptive and statistical analyses were used. P <0.05 was considered as significant.
Results: The royal jelly administration significantly reduced the depth of lesion in comparison with the control group (p<0.05) and
attuned histopathological changes in the treatment groups. The largest healing effect was demonstrated with royal jelly on 10th
treatment day, at a higher concentration (200 mg/kg).
Conclusion: These findings supported that royal jelly had effectively contributed to the wound healing, valid gastroprotective
activity, and can be used for peptic ulcer therapy
Spouse’s social support in the postpartum period, predictors and its relationship with postpartum depression in a sample of Iranian primiparous women
Objective
To investigate the predictive factors of receiving spousal support in the postpartum period and its relationship with postpartum depression (PPD).
Methods
This cross-sectional study was conducted between January and May 2019 in 250 primiparous women to determine the predictors of spousal social support in the postpartum period. Three scales were used to collect data: The Demographic and Obstetric Checklist, the Postpartum Partner Support Scale, and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale.
Results
Multivariate regression showed that the employment status of the spouse and life satisfaction variables were predictive of whether social support was received from a spouse in the postpartum period. In total, the variables examined in this model explained 19% of the variance for a mother receiving spousal social support in the postpartum period. PPD and spousal social support had a moderately inverse and significant correlation (β = –0.39).
Conclusion
Life satisfaction and employment of the spouse are important predictive variables for receiving social support of the spouse in the postpartum period. There is also a significant inverse relationship between PPD and spousal social support

The effects of radiofrequency on the bacteriological and histological characteristics of tonsils in patients with chronic and persistent tonsillitis
Objectives: Tonsillotomy with radiofrequency (RF) is one of the newest treatments for chronic tonsillitis, but the
mechanism of RF effects and complications are still pending. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of
RF on the histological and bacteriological characteristics of the tonsils (Case-control study).
Materials and methods: In fifty-two patients with chronic tonsillitis in 2017–2018, immediately after tonsillectomy, the tonsils were divided into 2sections; one sample treated with RF, and the other one considered as
control, without intervention. All tonsil samples sent for histological and bacteriological study: morphometric
assays made by Digitizer software, and type of bacterial colonies identified by microbiological and biochemical
tests. Willcoxon and McNemar tests were used for statistical analysis and level of significance was p ≤ .05.
Results: Tonsil mucosal thickness (2202.98 ± 323.09 vs. 2463.94 ± 357.61 μm) and size of the tonsil nodule
(28,000.42 ± 9608.75 vs. 36,692.81 ± 7040.74 μm2
) were significantly lower in the RF+ group than other
group (p = .001 and p = .01, respectively). There was no significant differences in thickness of the tonsil
epithelium (p = .075), number of lymphoid nodules (p = .860), and the number of reticular tonsil epithelium
(p = .813) between the two groups. Bacterial growth in RF- and RF+ groups had no statistically significant
difference (p = .06), however, the average colony count of S. aureus in RF+ tonsils were significantly lower, and
total number of bacterial colonies were significantly lower in RF+ group(1405 ± 156 vs. 2471 ± 156),
(p = .001).
Conclusion: RF surgery has significant effects on size of the nodules, thickness of the mucous layer and bacteriological characteristics of tonsil tissue. Especially S. aureus seems to be more sensitive to RF effects
Distribution and molecular analysis of Blastocystis subtypes from gastrointestinal symptomatic and asymptomatic patients in Iran
Introduction: Blastocystis is a common intestinal parasite of human and animal hosts. The parasite has 17 subtypes, and
among those at least nine subtypes (ST1-ST9) are found in human hosts.
Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of different subtypes of Blastocystis spp. among the
patients referred to Velayat hospital of Qazvin province, Iran.
Methods: Overall, 864 stool samples were examined by using formalin-ethyl acetate concentration method and Trichrome
staining. All specimens were cultured in clotted fetal bovine medium. Later, DNA extraction and PCR amplification of 18S
ribosomal RNA gene region was conducted and phylogenetic tree constructed.
Results: The results revealed 7.9% (68/864) of the study population were infected with Blastocystis. Intestinal symptoms
were observed in 61% (36/59) of individuals positive for Blastocystis, with abdominal pain in 58% (21/36) of cases which was
more frequent than other intestinal signs. No significant relationship was observed among the study variables. By molecular
and phylogenetic analysis, three subtypes ST1 (45%), ST2 (30%) and ST3 (23%) of parasite were identified.
Conclusion: This study showed ST1 subtype was the predominant subtype among the positive specimens, meanwhile the
highest haplotype and nucleotide diversity were clarified in ST3 subtype.

The impact of motivational interviewing on relapse to substance use among women in Iran: A randomized clinical trial
Background: Women in Iran are in great need of effective substance abuse services. The current study was
conducted to investigate the effectiveness of motivational interviewing (MI) for women in treatment for drug use in
Iran.
Method: The sample (N = 60) included women in a drug treatment center in Qazvin (Iran) from August to
December of 2017. The research sample included 60 female drug users randomly assigned to MI or Standard Care
(SC). Prior to randomization women completed a baseline questionnaire and the Relapse Prediction Scale (RPS),
which measures desire (urge) to use and probability of using/not using in risky situations (self-efficacy). MI consisted
of eight 60-min group sessions over a 1-month period, twice weekly. At 2-months follow-up, data were gathered
using a questionnaire similar to baseline. Mixed Model Analysis were used to determine group differences.
Results: Mean age of participants was 30 years and average addiction duration was 7 years. Although the scores of
the desire to use and the probability of drug use were not significant before the intervention, after the intervention,
scores on desire to use and probability of use improved about 81.1% (F: 2230.15, P < 0.001, degrees of freedom: 63,
15) and 81.9%, (F: 749.39, P < 0.001, degrees of freedom: 79, 77), respectively, compared to those of control group.
Conclusion: The results showed that motivational interviewing could decrease desire to use and probability of use
among female drug users. Motivational interviewing could play an important role in improving women’s health in
Iran
