    Indonesian Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions of Project-Based Learning in Critical Reading Class

    Along with the increasing popularity of Project-Based Learning (PBL), teachers are aware of the benefits of PBL to implement it in their classroom. The literature has shown that the use of PBL can enhance students' skills, ability, and interest while learning because it focuses on students learning process than the teaching process. However, in a context in Indonesia, there is still a lack of research perceptions of PBL especially in the Critical reading class and collected data to determine if PBL has positive impacts on students learning in the university. The research is aimed at investigating students' perceptions about PBL by implementing a half-semester project in the Critical Reading class. This study employed a mixed-method that includes both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis by involving undergraduate students of the 4th semester who take a critical reading class in Universitas Sebelas Maret. It is expected to show us an example of PBL practice in critical reading class and how students thought about its implementation and improvement. This study provides a students' perceptions of PBL in critical reading class. The results add to the findings and discussion on what makes the method of teaching PBL more successful and have practical implications for classroom teaching

    Insufficient Higher Order Thinking Skill in Reading Comprehension Exercises of an English Language Textbook

    Higher order thinking skill (HOTS) is an important outcome standard of higher education in any discipline. Accordingly, English language textbook should present higher order thinking questions to promote students’ higher order thinking skill. The aim of this research is to analyze the extent to which the higher order thinking skill (HOTS) and the indicators of reading skill are assessed in the reading comprehension exercises. This research used the descriptive analytical method of research, which refers to content analysis. The data are analyzed based on revised Bloom’s taxonomy and reading skill indicators. The findings reveal that: (1) HOTS in the reading comprehension exercises questions only includes analyzing skill and evaluating skill while creating skill is not found; and (2) the indicators of reading skill are not fully assessed from the questions in the reading comprehension exercises in English language textbook for twelfth grade students by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The textbook only assesses topic, explicit meaning, and implicit meaning indicators. Students will not achieve higher order thinking skill and reading skill excellently if they only practice reading comprehension exercises from the textbook

    Exploring the Application of Focusky-Based Presentation Media on Students’ Creative Writing in Indonesian University Context

    Globally, students have long familiarized with utilizng a presentation program from Microsoft named Powerpoint, this program is good just not enough to attract the attention of students’ creativity. It is necessary a program that can not only be used to display concepts but also be able to attract the attention of students while presenting. The program in question is Focusky, in addition to being easy to use the program is also able to display slides with zoom in-zoom out effect with friendly facilities and object effects galore making this program very suitable used by students in presenting their tasks in front of the class. This study employs a qualitative descriptive study by conducting data collection through books and other literature as the main object.  Descriptive analysis method provides a clear, objective, systematic, analytical and critical picture and description of the application of focusky presentation media to the creative writing of Unuiversity students. Students in general, for example in the Faculty of Literature UMI do not have the same information technology capabilities (evenly) where there are those capable while some who are less in designing presentations. Hence, utilizing focusky will help students who could make creative presentations media to the best of their abilites.  Focusky-based presentation acts as an alternative to support students creativity that is very appropriate to apply to creative writing ideas and motivate students during presentations in higher education setting

    Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of third semester students’ ability in mastering simple present tense using a Yell Video technique. The research method used was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research data included the results of the pre test and post test regarding the simple present tense. The data collection techniques used were classroom observation, interviews, notes, pre test and post test. The results of this study indicated that the use of a Yell Video can improve students' ability to understand the simple present tense.

    This research was aimed to describe the expression that the students used in talking to others to show their politeness in doing discussion in the classroom, but not in learning environment. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative method and used recording as the only instrument. The participant of this research was the second grade student of Senior High School in SMAN 5 Barru which consisted of 21 students. The result of this research showed that there were many factors influencing the students’ politeness in communication such as situation, status, age, culture, gender, and so on. And there were two common ways that the students used in expressing their politeness which was questioning and commanding

    The research presents about the effect of total physical response technique toward the students’ speaking ability at the first grade  of SMA Negeri 2 Kolaka. It  was  based  on  the  research  question”  Is  there  any  effect  of  total  physical response technique toward the students’ speaking ability at the first grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Kolaka?’. The objective of this research was find out the data and information whether there is an effect of total physical response technique toward the students’ speaking ability at the first grade of SMA Negeri 2 Kolaka. The design of this research was pre-experimental design which one group pretest and posttest design. The subject of this research was class X3  of SMA Negeri 2 Kolaka consisted 22 students based on purposive sampling. The research consist of   two variable, they are independent variable and dependent variable. The independent variable was Total Physical Response while the dependent variable was the students’ speaking ability. The instrument of the research was oral test which is recommended by Ur (1996). The data were analyzed by using inferential and descriptive statistic. The inferential statistic was used to examine the hypothesis, while the descriptive statistics was used to describe the students’ characteristics score such as mean score,  frequency,  minimun  and  maximun  score  in  both  pretest  and  posttest session. Based on findings in this research, it can be confirmed that the students’ mean score of post-test (3,9) is higher than pre-test (2,25). Standar deviation of post-test (0,541 ) was smaller than the the standard deviation of pre-test (0,668), and the value of tcount (11,2) was bigger than ttable  (2,080) at the significant level 0,05 and degree of freedom = 21, it means that H0  was rejected and H1  was accepted. It can be concluded that there is an effect of total physical response technique toward the students’ speaking ability at the first grade of SMA Negeri 2 Kolaka

    A Study on the Correlation between Motivation and Students’ Speaking Performance at an Indonesian Vocational High school Context

    This study aims to find out vocational high school students’ speaking performance in correlation with their motivation to learning English. This study employs a quantitative research method using questionnaire to gather the data. The whole population in this study was the first grade of SMK Negeri 6 Makassar which consists of three classes numbering 86 students. The samples were students from class b which consists of 25 students. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling technique. This study was conducted by distributing questionnaires to students who were respondents and test, after which they were input and analyzed through the SPSS program. The findings revealed that the correlation between motivation and speaking performance for vocational high school students indicated that it was strong enough or categorized as medium correlation. Furthermore, the findings showed that the motivated students usually feel more comfortable in their learning providing the students to speak up confidently wherever they are even although English is considered as a foreign language

    Investigating Anxiety in an Indonesian EFL Speaking Classroom

    Abstract.  This research aimed to explore the kinds of anxiety experienced by the students in learning speaking, and to examine the causes of the anxiety in learning speaking. This research employed descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research were 36 students consisting 19 females and 17 males selected to be research participants through conveniently selected sampling. The data of this research were collected by online questionnaire, and interview. The obtained data were analyzed in three major phases namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the research revealed three kinds of anxiety experienced by the students in learning speaking namely trait anxiety, situational-specific anxiety, and state anxiety. Furthermore, the causes of speaking anxiety were communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation

    EFL Students’ Perspective on the Usefulness of ICT based Learning in Indonesian Higher Education

    The study explores the perception of the EFL students in English Language Teaching through ICT based learning at Universitas Negeri Makassar. It employs a descriptive study using purposive sampling techniques by taking 57 respondents from university students. The online questionnaire used to collect data on the perception of students on the ICT based Learning of English Language Teaching. The method of descriptive in terms of percentage has been used for data processing, and the deduction method has been used to analyze and interpret data. The result of this study indicates the positive perception those university students hold on the use of the Learning Management System in English Language Teaching. Further study can refer to this Acceptance Model in determining a suitable ICT integrated learning program between the reality and user expectations of the program used

    EXPLORING BEGINNING EFL TEACHER IN MAKING LESSON PLAN FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF PUBLIC SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN MAKASSAR

    This study aims at exploring the beginning EFL teacher in making learning objective, selecting learning materials, and assessment used in learning, and discovering the problems and solutions of the beginning EFL teacher. This study is qualitative research with a case study. Data sources of the study were one beginning EFL teacher of SMAN A (pseudonym), the Vice Principal of SMAN A, and the Head of MGMP Makassar. Data were collected by employing observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation. The results of the study reveal that the beginning EFL teacher has problem in formulating clear learning objective and in using appropriate assessment to students’ achievement. However, he has adequate knowledge of selecting the materials from the easiest to the most challenging one. The solutions to overcome the problems of the beginning EFL teacher are to provide supervisor (superintendent) with the same discipline in school, assign qualified experienced teacher as mentor teacher to guide the beginning EFL teacher in his first year of teaching, and assign the beginning EFL teacher to join MGMP and attend its monthly meetings as a compulsory activity
