AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ANXIETY IN SPEAKING ENGLISH AT MAN I KOLAKA
ABSTRACTThis research was aimed to investigate; (1) the factors of students’ anxiety in speaking English; and (2) the strategies used by the students in overcoming their anxiety in speaking English at the first grade of MAN I Kolaka. This research used a mix method namely quantitative and qualitative. In conducting the research, the researcher collected the data by using questionnaire and interview. The participant of this research were 30 students of class X IPA 1. The result of this research showed that the factors of students’ anxiety in speaking English of MAN 1 Kolaka were communicative apprehension, with mean value (3,82) test anxiety with mean value (3,4) fear of negative evaluation with mean value ( 3,67). The result of interviewed showed that there were five strategies that students used to overcome their anxiety in speaking English such as: preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking and resignation
Male and Female EFL Students’ Learning Style at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar
This study is intended to answer the main research questions related to the students’ learning style preferences that used dominantly by male and female students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in 2017/2018 academic years. Their gender differences in communication affect the students’ learning style. There were 20 students involved as the participants of the study which were selected by using convenient sampling. The data were collected by using three instruments: observation, diaries and questionnaire. Then, the data were analyzed by using mixed methods both qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative data were obtained from observations and diaries while quantitative data were obtained from questionnaires. The procedures of data analysis consisted of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion or verification. The result of this study shows that the learning style that used dominantly by female students is kinesthetic learning style. Moreover, the data also showed that the male students tend to use auditory learning style. Whereas, in terms of individual and group learning style preference, there were no significant differences between male and female in working as a group and individual. In addition, there is an effect of gender difference in term of learning style because of the notions of male and female’s communication. The male students’ preferred auditory learning style because male students tended to enjoy and more active to learn by hearing music and short video as learning media. On the other hand, female students preferred kinesthetic learning style because they learn best by being involved physically in the classroom, such as learning by doing and learning by using games. CLIL-Oriented and Task-based EFL Materials Development
This Research & Development (R&D) aims at developing materials in the form of a coursebook prototype for the tenth-grade students of senior high schools in Indonesia. Teacher interviews and students questionnaire were used to assess the users’ needs. The data revealed that the existing materials are not relevant to the students’ needs majored in studying Math and Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). So there is a need for developing new materials by orienting to quality CLIL materials principles and task-based approach. In general, based on the validation checklists, the materials were considered reliable by the English teachers, the EFL material and language expert and the media expert. The final product was also considered acceptable by the students and teachers based on the questionnaires distributed after the limited-field tryout. The study resulted in three main products: Student Book, Teacher’s Guide, and Listening Audio CD
ACTIVATING STUDENTS’ INTEREST THROUGH WONDERSHARE QUIZ CREATOR SOFTWARE IN READING COMPREHENSION
This research aimed at finding out whether or not the use of “Wondershare QuizCreator Software” activates the students’ interest in reading comprehension of theEnglish Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education,Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, Indonesia. In academic Year 2012/2013,based on investigating students’ interest in learning of reading comprehensionthrough Wondershare Quiz Creator Software. The research employed the trueexperimental method. This research assigned two groups namely experimentalgroup and control group. Each group consisted of 45 students. The sample waschosen by applying cluster random sampling technique. The researcher used thequestionnaire was given to the students to cover the statements about the students’ interest in the implementation of software in reading comprehension. The data obtained through Likert Scale, it was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS 16.0 version. In conducting the research, the researcher applied the “Wondershare Quiz Creator Software” and the result showed that there was students’ interest at the experimental group after applying the software. It was proven by the result of descriptive and inferential statistics in questioning the students’ statements in the posttest. Based on the result of the questionnaire engaged to the experimental group, the interest of the students was dominantly classified as very high interest. There were 12 (27%) of them classified as high interest and 33 students dominated 73 % as very high interest. The students in the experimental group generally agree with the implementation of the software because they had confidence and felt more enthusiastic with the mean score is 86.53, which was categorized as interesting
Describing Pictures in Improving the Students’ Ability in Writing
This Research was designed to improve the students’ ability in writing by Describing pictures.The problem of the research was “can describing pictures improve students’ ability in writing?”. There were many kinds of strategies that could be used in teaching writing, but in this research, the researcher applied only describing pictures, and writing activities focusing on the kinds of activities. The design of this research was Collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR). Based on the analytical scoring rubric showed that from 63 in the first cycle and got increased to 73 in the second cycle. In the first cycle there were 13 Students of 30 students could reach the minimum score or only 43 % students were success. While in the last cycle there were 27 Students of 30 students could reach even greater that the minimum score or 90% students were success.Based on the conclusion of this research the researcher suggests some points. Firstly, describing pictures could be employed to improve the students’ ability in writing. Secondly, it was suggested that the English teacher could apply describing pictures as one of the alternative techniques that could be used in the teaching of English to all skills especially writing
Examining Students’ Questioning Strategies in EFL Classroom Interaction
The study on examining students’ questioning strategies in EFL classroom interaction is aimed at investigating: (1) the types of students questioning strategies that appeared in the EFL classroom interaction; (2) the levels of students questioning strategies that appeared in the EFL classroom interaction; and (2) the students perceptions regarding to their questions strategies in the EFL classroom interaction. This research employed descriptive qualitative research. It applied purposive random sampling technique in selecting sample. The participants of this research were a class C of third semester English students at Graduate Program of English Education Department in State University of Makassar of academic year 2018/2019. The data were collected by employing video recording and interview. The obtained data was scripted and analyzed based on interactive model of namely: (1) data reduction, (2) data display, and (3) conclusion drawing and verification. The results of this research showed that; (1) the types of students questioning strategies that appeared in the EFL classroom interaction are referential questions and display questions; (2) the level of students’ questioning respectively lies out on higher and lower level of cognitive questions which divided into three level; remembering, understanding and applying; (3) each students has different perception regarding the questioning strategies. Some students ask questions because they did not understand the material discussed while the other students ask questions only because the topic is interesting. Furthermore, in asking questions, majority of students write down in their questions first to make sure that their questions is suitable with the topic. Finally, each student has different ways to make sure that the presenter understands regarding their questions
Mix Freeze group based Cooperative Learning Approach for Improving the Students Reading Comprehension at the first grade students of SMAN 1 Bontomarannu
This research aimed to explain the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of Literal Reading of the text dealing with main ideas and sequence of details and Creative Reading of the text dealing withcharacterization and conclusion. The researcher used a classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was taken at the first grade students of SMAN 1 Bontomarannu with a number of the subject were 35 students. The research findings indicated that the application of SMAN 1 Bontomarannu, This strategy was improving the students’ reading comprehension in terms ofLiteral reading and Creative reading of the text. It was proved by the mean score of cycle I was 60.7. It was classified as fair then improved to be 73.36. It was classified as good in cycle II. They are higher than the mean score of diagnostic test namely 50.7 that classified as poor. Therefore there was the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of Literal Reading of the text dealing with main ideas and sequence of details and Creative Reading of the text dealing withcharacterization and conclusion
The Linguistic Features Uniqueness of the Students’ Written Discourse in Online Learning
This research aimed at finding and describing the types and the uniqueness of linguistic features used by the students in their written discourse in BritishEnglishClass.com. The researcher applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data collection was done using document analysis in form of chat history in Whatsapp and taking ten students as the participants of this study. The result of the analysis showed that the students used six types of linguistic features namely (1) Lexical features in terms of the use of interjection, abbreviation, word letter replacement, word combination, code switching, code mixing and diction, (2) Orthographic features in terms of word spelling and capitalization, (3) Grammatical features in terms of ellipsis, passive voice, verb use, and personal pronoun, (4) Discourse features in terms of the use of interactional features and the stream of consciousness, (5) Paralinguistic and Graphic in terms of emoticon usage and excessive punctuation and, (6) other features in terms of written out laughter . These features are unique because they are different from the standard form of the language. It can be seen also from the use of abbreviation and ellipsis that shorten the students’ sentence, the use of emoticon representing the emotions and psychical activity, the use of lower and upper case to represent the sound and the intonation of the student’ sentence, the abandonment of convention of capitalization of proper nouns and the first words of sentences, and the creative orthography of some words. Reducing Students’ Pronunciation Anxiety by Utilizing WhatsApp Group in Learning English Consonant Sounds
This research aims at describing the utilization of WhatsApp group to reduce students’ pronunciation anxiety in learning English consonant sounds. It is conducted to the first semester of English Department students at STKIP PGRI Banjarmasin batch 2018 in Pronunciation Practice course. The instruments of this research are the documentation of students’ scores on voice records sent to WhatsApp group and the questionnaire. Both the instruments are analyzed quantitatively. The documentation of students’ voice records is analyzed to see their progress of practicing English consonant sounds during eight meetings. Meanwhile, the questionnaire is analyzed to get their impressions and personal feelings whether the use of WhatsApp group help them to reduce their anxiety as well as fear of making error in pronunciation practice. The result of students’ voice record documentation shows that there are 56% students who have good scores, 42% students have enough scores, and 5% of students have fair scores. It indicates that the result of students’ pronunciation practice needs to be improved. The students should carry out regular practice to get maximal pronunciation ability. The result of questionnaire shows that there are 78% of them state that WhatsApp group helps them much in learning, feel enjoy, have self-confidence as the result of having more relax after involving on class discussion using WhatsApp group
A Cross-Sectional Study on Vocabulary Size Among Different Levels of the University Students
The objectives of this research were to know students’ vocabulary size; and to know whether there was significant difference of vocabulary size among the students of different levels of English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Makassar Muhammadiyah University in academic year 2017/2018. This study used quantitative descriptive and cross-sectional study as the design of the study. The sample of this study were the first, third, fifth, and seventh semester students. The instrument of this study is a vocabulary size test. It used one-way ANOVA to analyze the data of the test. The findings reveal that the highest mean score was the seventh semester students and the lowest mean score was the third semester students. And the most beyond expectation was the mean score of the first semester students which gone over the third and fifth semester students’ mean score. There is significant difference of the vocabulary size among the students of different levels. The result showed F-value (F0) 11.11 is greater than F-table (Ft) 2.60, (11.11 ≥ 2.60). Then the p value is 0.000 lower than 0.05 (0.000 ≤ 0.05). Hence, it can be concluded that H0is rejected and H1is accepted. Post Hoc Multiple Comparison showed that significant difference did not exist between some groups and only exist between two groups. Clearly, from the result, it can be said that there was significant difference of vocabulary size among the university students of different levels of English Department of Makassar Muhammadiyah University.Keywords: vocabulary, vocabulary size tes
