The Effect of Audiobook on Reading Comprehension of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 2 Buru
ABSTRACTThe audiobook does not only involves multiple senses of the students, but also the inclusion of its speech, helping them to improve their comprehension. This study sought to investigate the effects' of audiobook on students' reading comprehension, and to find out students' interest in audiobooks on the teaching of reading. The mixed method called the Quan-qual model applied at this study. Some sixty eleventh-grade students participated, and data were collected by employing reading comprehension tests and questionnaires (open-ended questions). The quantitative data analyzed using paired and independent sample t-test through SPSS 20 Version, and the qualitative data analyzed through an open-coding technique. The use of audiobook was more effective than the non-audiobook. It is proven by the comparison of the mean score from both of the groups which (68.00 ˃ 48.80). The p-value in the post-test is .000, and the level of significance is α 0.05, the p-value is smaller than α (.000<0.05). The hypothesis testing found that t-value = 14.699 was higher than t-table = 2.045 (p=.000, df=29); it means that Ha was accepted, and Ho was rejected. Another, the students are interested in using audiobooks because it stimulating, challenging, available, powerful and innovative in the reading activity. INVESTIGATING CODE-MIXING AS PERSUASIVE STRATEGIES IN ADVERTISING: A STUDY OF CODE-MIXING IN INDONESIAN COMMERCIAL CONTEXT
This study deals with the phenomena of code-mixing with a specific focus on commercial advertising specifically in Indonesian commercial context. It analyzes the use of these techniques in order to produce a persuasive effect in Indonesian today. The objective of this study to investigate the forms of code mixing used in Commercial Advertisement and to shed light on the factors of using code mixing in Commercial Advertisement. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach by describing about forms and factors of using code mixing in Commercial Advertisement. The research findings revealed six forms of code mixing utilized in Indonesian Commercial Advertisement today. Those are words, phrase, hybrid, repetition, idioms, and clause. The study further showed the factors of using code mixing in Commercial Advertisement. Those were interjection (Inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), quoting somebody else, talking about a particular topic, expressing group identity, being emphatic about something and repetition used for clarification
Graduate Students’ Perceptions on their Self-Efficacy in Writing Academic Papers
ABSTRACTIt is notable to note here that self-efficacy needs to be ingrained strongly within graduate students to show a higher enthusiasm, efforts, and persistence in accomplishing various demanding academic writing projects. Tangibly, there are still many graduate students who lack motivation and confidence when doing academic writings. As a result, their attitudes toward writing turn into negative actions crippling their self-efficacy. This study aimed to investigate graduate students’ perceived self-efficacy in academic writings. One research problem was formulated in this study namely, how do English Education Master Students maintain their self-efficacy to accomplish their academic writings? This study employed a mixed-method harnessing classroom survey and interview questions to gather data from English Education Master Students engaging in academic writings, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Findings from this study revealed that graduate students are able to produce more qualified academic writing products when they are motivated continuously by their lecturer. LEARNER’S PSEUDO MENTAL MODEL ON PERFORMING ENGLISH SPEAKING TASK ABILITY
ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to find out the causes of pseudo mental model occurred on performing English speaking task ability. This research is conducted to the learners of English department in academic year 2018-2019. This research uses questionnaire as the only instrument. The questionnaire was distributed through WA group of learners English department. 38 learners got a questionnaire but only 28 learners who returned the questionnaire to the researcher. The questionnaire consists of 17 items. This research uses descriptive qualitative whereas the researcher analyzes and describes the questionnaire distributed and returned from learners of English department. Base on the data gained, the result shows that although learners have high motivation on learning English speaking subject, that is 96%, pseudo mental model (nervous, afraid, and less confident)on performing English speaking task ability still occurred. Besides that, it also occurs not only because of learners had problems in language component skills , that is 75%, though in fact in specific problems occurred 57% (problems are not similar) but also in mental model 67% though preparation is prepared well 92%, 78% before conducting and 71% during performing, and the frequency of “always “ being nervous, afraid and less confident is 64%. Moreover, 92% learners are trying to reduce of having pseudo mental model (afraid, nervous, lack confident)
LEARNING SPEAKING THROUGH COMMUNICATIVE GRAMMAR ON SYSTEMATIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS (SFL)
Practicing speaking is very important for students to exchange ideas with others. Although having learned English for the years, many EFL students face problems in delivering the ideas orally. To overcome this kind of problem, an expo de facto research was conducted by observing the students’ scores in two subjects grammar and speaking. The students were in the first semester of the English education major. The research is to find out the material used in teaching grammar to develop speaking learning. To satisfy the aim of this study, the mixed-method was implemented. The data was analyzed qualitatively and confirmed quantitatively by the applying t-test. From the analysis could be drawn that Using translation-method, podcast, noticing, and conversation in applying the communicative-grammar method enhances the students’ competence in speaking. It is very helpful for the teachers and students to implement it in learning grammar and speaking. It also provides the idea to other researchers to dig some deeper innovation in the same field
The Use of Orthography to Increase Young Learners’ Basic Literacy: Spelling Ability
The mastery of literacy skills of young learners is essential and fundamental which include reading and writing. Literacy skills are closely related to cognitive abilities that provide knowledge, information, and meaning. Spelling ability is one of the essential skills in reading that must be considered. This study aims to examine the use of orthography to improve the ability to spell in reading. This study was conducted with a qualitative approach through a systematical review method with meta-synthesis as the analysis tool. Data obtained from 4 previous research articles with criteria Q1 Scopus index. ABILITY OF READING COMPREHENSION USING COOPERATIVE SCRIPT FOR NON-ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
The objectives of this study are implementation, and evaluation using Cooperative Script method in reading comprehension. It also to determine whether or not there is an increase in reading comprehension results using the Cooperative Script method. This research referred as qualitative research, which is an action thought on a particular object. The type of this research is Classroom Action Research. Classroom action research is a digestion of learning activities in the form of an action, which is deliberately raised and occurs in a class together. The process of reading comprehension in this study uses the Cooperative Script method, which consists of 2 cycles of 5 meetings. The first cycle consisted of two meetings and the second cycle of two meetings, one meeting was used for the pre-test. In planning, the researcher compiles a learning implementation plan, makes learning media compile an observation instrument to observe students in learning activities. The process of implementing evaluation in this learning is carried out at the end of each cycle. The assessment is carried out to determine the ability of students' reading comprehension in using the methods that have been applied. The success rate in each cycle has increased, starting from the pre-test which increased on average 45 in cycle I to 61.10 then increased again in cycle II to 72.3. From the results of the assessment it can be proven that the application of the Cooperative Script method can improve students' reading comprehension
ANALYSIS OF HIGHER-ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) ITEMS IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH NATIONAL EXAMINATION 2019
In order to fulfill the 21’st century skills, the implementation of HOTS items to enhance students’ reasoning skills is deemed important. Nonetheless, we need to observe more about the extent and specific dimensions of HOTS applied in the English National Examination in Indonesia. The present study, therefore aimed to classify the items that fulfilled the indicators of HOTS items in ENE 2019 and specific dimension of knowledge types and dimension of cognitive process skills of the HOTS items. The results showed there was a sufficient total of a HOTS item in ENE 2019. Out of 35 questions, 15 (42.86%) were considered as HOTS items. The second finding was the dimension of cognitive process skills were on the stage of Analyze and Create. The findings indicated that ENE 2019 already had sufficient amount of HOTS items, although the distribution of the cognitive abilities is still monotonous. It was suggested for the exam developers to implement adequate proportion of the HOTS cognitive abilities to enhance students’ HOTS
IMPROVING STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILLS THROUGH SOCIODRAMATIC PLAY AT THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 2 MAMUJU
This study aims at finding out the effectiveness of sociodramatic play in improving students' speaking skills. This study is quantitative research with Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. Data sources of the study were the second grade students of SMAN 2 Mamuju. The participants were taken through purposive random sampling technique. Data were collected by using observation, test and questionnaire. In this study, post-test was conducted in three cycles. The results of the study show that students had made some progress during the learning process. In pre-test, most of the students were having poor speaking skills with as many as 53% participants were in this category. However, there were significant improvements toward students' speaking skills with no more students with both very poor and poor speaking skills in third cycle. From the result of the test, it can be concluded that sociodramatic play is useful to improve the students' speaking skills. In addition, most of students feel interested in and enjoy the learning process by having sociodramatic play in speaking class
Students’ Speaking Problem at the Fourth Semester of English Study Program in Sembilanbelas November Kolaka
ABSTRACTThe objectives of this research were to find out the students’ speaking problemsat the fourth semester of English Study Program in Sembilanbelas November University and factors affecting them. This research employed case study with qualitative approach. There were 26 participants at class A of the fourth semester in English Study Program. Those participants were selected through purposive sampling technique. To gain the data interview, observation sheet, and students’ transcript report were used. The result showed that there were four problems that were experienced by students at the class A fourth semester first was inhibition, when speaking the students tend to be worried about making mistake, getting criticism from others, and shyness. The second was lack of ideas; the students tend to be silent participants in speaking due to lack of vocabulary and grammar. The third was low or uneven participation in speaking. Here, only few students participate the speaking activities while other remaining silent. And the last was students got difficulty to speak because of the influencing of mother-tongue use. There were two factors affecting the students’ speaking ability such as internal and external factors. The internal factors here the students have low motivation in speaking while the external factors were the students’ condition in the classroom
