    INVESTIGATING STUDENTS DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH ONLINE MODE IN SMA NEGERI 1 SOJOL

    This research aims to find out the difficulties experienced by students in learning English via online mode. The subjects of this research were students of Grade XI SMA Negeri 1 Sojol, Sojol District, Donggala Regency. This research used a survey study with mixed methods. The participants were 132 students of Grade XI at SMA Negeri 1 Sojol. The research instruments were questionnaire and an interview that. Each instrument contained open-ended and close-ended questions. The questionnaires distributed directly for each class and it consisted of 3 parts with the total was 21 items. Besides, there was interview which consisted of 5 questions, the researcher interviewed three students who answered many of the “agree” responses. The researcher found that the learning difficulties students of grade XI via online mode at SMA Negeri 1 Sojol are the network is not good to access internet, the teacher’s explanation difficult to understand, and students also constraint to buy internet quota because they don't have money. The teacher should to pay more attention to the problems faced by students in order to be able to provide solutions or policies to reduce the difficulties that faced by them

    USING PQRST METHOD TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION

    This research aims to determine whether using the PQRST method can improve the reading comprehension of the tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Tolitoli. The researchers applied a quasi-experimental research design by using non-random sampling techniques to get the sample. The instruments of data collection were pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was used to measure the students' prior knowledge, and the post-test was used to measure the improvement in students' reading comprehension using the PQRST method after the treatment. The t-test was analyzed to compare the mean scores of the experimental group (93.95) and the control group (89.58). The significance level was 0.05 with 60 degrees of freedom (df=66). The result of data analysis indicates that the t-counted (2,92) is higher than the t-table (1.659). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. It was concluded that using the PQRST method can improve students' reading comprehension of the tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Tolitoli

    ANALYSIS OF TEACHING ENGLISH DURING E-LEARNING CLASSES AT SMP NEGERI 6 PALU

    This research aims to find out the teaching English process during e-learning classes at SMP Negeri 6 Palu. This research was conducted through a descriptive qualitative research design in which the results are transcribed and described. The subjects of this research were three English teachers at SMP Negeri 6 Palu. This research used interviews to collect the data. Based on the research findings, the teaching English process during e-learning classes was first the teacher preparing before e-learning classes, the teacher preparing media such as modules, laptops, attendance lists, materials to be taught and applications for online teaching such as Zoom, Google Meet and Whatsaap. Second, the teacher finds a way to make students active during e-learning classes. The teacher provides activities that can make students active such as giving projects video, asking students to retell stories, and doing questions and answers. Third, in teaching English during e-learning classes, the teachers used videos, pictures, songs, and games to convey the material depending on what material will be taught by the teachers. Fourth, problem faced by the teachers during e-learning classes, some of the teacher's problems when teaching English online, only a few students take a zoom class, and some students do not have communication tools such as cellphones or laptops. Thus, as much as possible, the teacher provides a solution to the problems

    TEACHER PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF WHATSAPP IN TEACHING ENGLISH DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

    This research aimed to discover teachers' perceptions of the use of WhatsApp in teaching English. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was the English teachers at SMP Negeri 3 Poso Pesisir. An interview was used to collect the data. In the qualitative method, the data was analyzed using data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The result shows that the teachers perceived the use of WhatsApp are able to facilitate the learning process during COVID-19 Pandemic, especially for teaching English. Teachers used it as a facilitation tool for managing students’ tasks, posting material related to teaching English, organizing WhatsApp, and accommodating students’ interaction. In addition, teachers can manage large classes efficiently because technology takes it as an alternative method for teaching during the pandemic. The teacher can access the students' responses anytime in any place, and also, teachers can give feedback directly. WhatsApp provides the chance to learn not only at school but also at home or in any place. However, some factors limit the use of WhatsApp, such as highly consumed data plan, lack of familiarity with the students in adoption of WhatsApp, and submitting assignments behind schedule. Teachers stated that using WhatsApp was very helpful for conducting their virtual classroom

    DEVELOPING VOCABULLARY MASTERY OF GRADE SEVEN STUDENTS OF SMPN 6 PALU THROUGH CARTOON MOVIES

    The purpose of this research is to determine if the use of cartoon movies can develop the vocabulary mastery of grade seven students of SMPN 6 Palu. This research method used a quasi-experimental. The population of this research are students of grade seven of SMPN 6 Palu consists of two classes, with the total number is 239 people. The cluster random sampling technique is used to determine the sample of control class and the experimental class. Based on this technique, class VII A became the control group and VII F was the experiment group. The instruments used in this research consisted of pre-test and post-test, there were three kinds of the test; spelling words, matching, and making sentences. In the pre-test, the mean scores of the experimental group was 85,93 and the control group was 86.15. The post-test result for the experimental group was 96,85 and for the control group was 95,22. Applying a significance level of 0.05, the researcher found that the t-count (2,982) was higher than the t-table (1.671). Therefore, Ho is declared rejected and Ha is accepted. In conclusion, the use of cartoon movies can develop the vocabulary mastery of the grade seven students of SMPN 6 Palu

    AN ANALYSIS ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ROLE PLAY IN TEACHING SPEAKING

    Speaking is one of the most important skills to be developed in order to communicate effectively. Therefore, the goal of teaching speaking skills is communicative efficiency. In order to achieve the goal, many methods and techniques are applied including role play method. This research aims to analyze how to implement role play in teaching speaking English based on the previous research. This study applied a library research, which is part of qualitative research. Data were collected through undergraduate thesis, thesis, and journal articles published in 2014 to 2023. The data were analyzed using content analysis based on Harmer (2007). There are ten scientific writings from Susilo (2014), Hidayanti (2015), Sholikah (2017), Agustiningrum (2019), Sholiha (2020), Tumada et al. (2020), Marwa (2020), Arifin (2021), Farisya (2022), and Magfirah (2022). Some researchers refer to expert recommendations using role play by Harmer (2007), Lewin (1990), and Kemmis and Mc Taggart (1988) procedure. The results of the study show that the implementation of role play is effective in improving students speaking skills because students take a new identity and learn to use a foreign language students for every day interaction. Besides that, role play technique is ineffective in teaching speaking skills because of some factors for some students and teacher. Students and teachers using the role play technique to develop and teach speaking skills should prioritize preparation, participation, and reflection. To get the most out of the learning experience, students should actively participate in the scenarios, taking on their roles with excitement and originality. They should also be receptive to comments and willing to practice frequently in order to enhance their fluency and confidence. Teachers should carefully select or create role play scenarios that are both relevant and demanding, with clear directions and enough support

    USING INSTAGRAM CAPTION TO IMPROVE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 19 PALU

    The objective of this research is to find out whether Instagram caption can improve the vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students of SMPN 19 Palu or not. This research used quasi experimental research design. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students of SMPN 19 Palu which is consisted of 98 students.  The sample of the research consisted of two groups which were selected through simple random sampling, the groups such as class B as the experimental group and class D as the control group. The researcher used tests to collect the data, the tests consisted of the pre-test and the post-test. The result of the test showed that the mean score of the pre-test of the experimental group was 20.62, while the mean score of control group was 20.40.  Then, the mean score of the post-test of experimental group was 79.96, while the mean score of control group was 68.92. The value of t-counted (3.01) was higher than the value of t-table (2.0116), it means that the hypothesis was accepted. Based on the result, it can be concluded that using Instagram caption can improve vocabulary mastery of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 19 Palu.     THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GUESSING GAME TO INCREASE VOCABULARY OF THE GRADE EIGHT STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 1 SOJOL UTARA

    The aim of this research is to find out whether the implementation of guessing game increases the vocabulary of the grade eight students at SMP Negeri 1 Sojol Utara or not. The research design was quantitative research. The researcher used total sampling techniques to select 36 students as samples for this research. The data were analyzed by using t-test. Based on the data analysis tests, the mean score in the experimental group's pre-test was 52.86 and the control group's mean score is 65.11. After doing the treatment, the students’ mean score of experimental group’s post-test was 85.56, greater than the control group's means score which is 80.44. The comparison of the test of scale describes that t-counted value= 4.35> t-table value= 2.01. Therefore, Ha is confirmed and Ho is rejected. It can be concluded that the implementation of guessing game increases the vocabulary of the grade eight students at SMP Negeri 1 Sojol Utara

    APPLYING WEBBING STRATEGY IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION

    The research aims to determine whether Applying Webbing Strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension grade Eight students of SMPN 1 Sojol. This research applied a quasi-experimental research design. The research sample was Eight D as the experimental group, which consisted of 25 students, and Eight A as the control group, which consisted of 27 students. The instrument used in collecting the data were pre-test and post-test. The treatment was given six times. The data were analyzed statistically to determine the difference between the pre-test and post-test. As a result of the study, the mean score of the experimental group taught by applying webbing strategy was improved compared to the control group taught without applying webbing strategy. In other words, applying webbing strategy can improve the reading comprehension of grade eight students of SMPN 1 Sojol.

    The objectives of the research are to investigate and describe the students level of simple past tense and dificullties faced by Grade VIII Students SMP Negeri 2 Tinombo Selatan in Simple Past Tense. The research was conducted throught descriptive qualitative research design. Data analysis of the students Simple Past Tense on Regular and Iregular verb, It is found that the students level in Simple Past Tense is poor level since thay have limited knowledge english. In line with it, most of them understood the question, yet some of them found of dificcult to respomd to the questions immediatly. Furthermore, the problem faced by the students regarding simple past tense are lack vocabulary and regular Irregular verb.
