READING COMPREHENSION DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED BY THE FIRST-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 5 PALU
This research aims to identify the difficulties faced by the tenth-grade students of SMAN 5 Palu and the factors causing the students' difficulties in comprehending English reading text. This research is mixed method research. The subject of research was the tenth-grade students of SMAN 5 Palu. The techniques for collecting the data are interviews and tests. The researchers present the data from the difficulties in comprehending English reading text. The result of the research shows that 13, 33% of students have difficulties in understanding to look for the text's central idea, with an incorrect total of 8. Then, 41, 67% of students have difficulties in understanding vocabulary of the text, with the total of incorrect is 25. Then, there are 8, 33% of students who have difficulties in understanding to look for the detail information of the text, with the total incorrect is 5. Next, there are 36, 67% of students who have difficulties in understanding making inferences of the text with the total of incorrect is 22. The factors causing the students difficulties in comprehending English reading text are difficulty in understanding long sentences in the text, lack of interest reading, difficulty in understanding vocabulary, house environment and school environment
IMPROVING WRITING SKILL THROUGH FREE WRITING TECHNIQUE
This research aimed to prove whether Free Writing Technique could improve the eighth-grade students' skills in writing descriptive text. The researcher used a quasi-experimental research design. The population of this research was the eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Dampal Selatan, consisting of 3 classes. The sample was chosen using a random sampling technique to select an experimental and control group. The samples were class VIII B as the experimental group and class VIII c as the control group. The pretest result showed that the experimental group's mean score was 47.91, while the control group's was 48.75. The mean score of the experimental group on the posttest was significantly improved from 47.91 to 76.25.
Furthermore, the result of the data analysis showed that the t-counted value of 2.82 was higher than the t-table value of 2.02 by applying a 0.05 level of significance and 38 degrees of freedom. Therefore, the hypothesis of this research was accepted. In conclusion, the eighth-grade students' skill in writing descriptive text at SMP Negeri 1 Dampal Selatan can be improved through Free Writing Technique
ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN USING SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT
This research aims to find out the kind of error frequently made by the students in using simple present tense in descriptive text and the source of errors made by the students. This research is qualitative descriptive. The subject was selected by using purposive sampling. The subject of the research was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 9 Palu consisting of 30 students. The techniques for collecting the data were tests and questionnaires. The researcher used the technique of analyzing the data from Ellis and Barkhuizen. The steps to analyze the data were collecting data, identification, description, explanation, and evaluation. The result indicates four types of errors namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The most frequent error made by the student was omission and the least frequent error was misordering. The interlingual transfer was the highest gradation of possible source of students' error in using simple present tense
A STUDY ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF FLASHCARDS IN TEACHING VOCABULARY
The objectives of this research are to describe how the implementation of Flashcards in teaching vocabulary and to describe how is students’ vocabulary mastery is after the implementation of Flashcards. The study applied qualitative design that implemented the Library Research Method. The data were collected from scientific writings on implementing Flashcards in teaching vocabulary between 2011 and 2021. The scientific writing was found on the internet. The data were analyzed using content analysis based on Wright (1989). There are nine scientific writings as the data. The results of data analysis showed that implementing Flashcards in nine different studies was carried out using many methods. Some researchers refer to expert recommendations using Flashcards. Buttner (2007), Budden (2013), Allen (1983), Read (2013), Wright (1989), and Harmer (2007). All studies show that students' vocabulary increases after applying Flashcards in their research. Flashcards have some impact on students. For example, Flashcards increase students' motivation to learn vocabulary, students easily understand the material, students can make simple sentences, students acquire new vocabulary, students' vocabulary increases, and students can understand the material. The increase in students' vocabulary is caused by several factors, namely the amount of treatment given, class conditions, and the strategies used by the teachers to overcome students' vocabulary weaknesses
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT THROUGH DRAW STRATEGY
The objective of this research is to investigate whether or not the use of DRAW Strategy is effective to develop reading comprehension of second grade students at SMP Negeri Satap Parigi Tengah. The method of this research was pre-experimental research design with one group pre-test post-test only. Since the sample of the research only one class, the researcher applied total sampling technique. The total number of students were 12. The instrument of data collection was test which administered twice called pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed descriptively and statistically. The result of data analysis showed that there is significant difference between the students’ achievement on pre-test and post-test. The students’ mean score on the pre-test increase from 42.2 to 81,62 on the post-test. By applying 0.05 significant level with 11 degree of freedom, it was found that the value of t-counted (46.53) is greater than the value of t-table (1.796). It indicates that the research hypothesis is accepted. Thus, the application of DRAW Strategy is effective to improve reading of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri Satap Parigi Tengah
AN ANALYSIS OF QUESTIONING TYPES OF EFL TEACHERS AT SMA AL-KHAIRAAT KOLONO
The objective of this research is to find out the types of questions used by the classroom teachers of the second-grade students at SMA Al-KhairaatKolono. The research used qualitative description method. The data were obtained from observation and interviews. The subjects of this research were two English teachers at SMA Al-KhairaatKolono. The results of this research showed that English teachers used three types of questions the teaching and learning process, namely Knowledge, Comprehension, and Evaluation. However, the second teacher did not use the Evaluation types of questions. Furthermore, from the results of interview, the purposes of the teachers used these types of questions are, first to measure the students’ understanding. Second, help the teacher in training the students to improve their skill in giving opinions. Third, it was simple and easy for the students to understand the material. From using the questioning strategy, there are several implications including increasing students’ activity during the teaching and learning process, Students are also able to involve themselves in answering questions from the teacher and able to understand the material provided by the teachers. 
INVESTIGATING STUDENTS' DIFFICULTIES IN COMPREHENDING ENGLISH READING TEXT
This research aims to discover the most difficult aspect of reading comprehension, especially in descriptive text, encountered by the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sigi and the contributing factors to this difficulty. This research employs a mixed method, where the test and interview are used to collect the data. The subject of this research is students of class X IPA 1 at SMA Negeri 2 Sigi in the academic year 2022/2023. The test was given to 25 students and consisted of 15 questions divided into five types: main idea, locating references, understanding vocabulary, making inferences, and detailed information. Then, the researcher interviewed three students by giving them ten questions. The results of the test show that the most difficult aspect encountered by the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Sigi is understanding vocabulary, while the results of the interview show that there are two factors that cause students’ difficulties in comprehending the text, namely internal and external factors. Internal factors are a lack of reading strategies, limited stock of vocabulary, and lack of student interest, while the external factor is the students’ environment
USING STORY PYRAMID STRATEGY TO IMPROVE READING COMPREHENSION OF THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 14 PALU
This research was conducted at grade eighth students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu in the teaching and learning process. This research aims to improve students' reading comprehension by using the Story Pyramid Strategy. The population in this research was grade eighth students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. This research employs purposive sampling to select the sample. This research applies a quasi-experimental research design non-equivalent control group design, which consists of two groups: experimental and control group. The description of the data collected through the pre-test and post-test. The students’ scores after presenting the material using Story Pyramid Strategy in reading comprehension were better than before the treatment was given to the student . This strategy can be a learning media applied by teachers in the teaching and learning process as an effective strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension because the use of Story Pyramid Strategy makes it easier for students to understand the content of the story. The result of the data analysis is that t-count was higher than t-table. From these results, the researcher found there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test result. This means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. This is proven by the improvement of students reading comprehension after being given treatment using story pyramid strategy
IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION OF GRADE VIII STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 2 PALU THROUGH SQ3R
The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of the SQ3R method can improve the reading comprehension of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Palu or not. This research used a quasi-experimental research design. The sample of the research was 21 students from class VIII A as the control class and 20 students from class VIII B as the experimental one. The instruments used in this research were test, pre test, and post test. The result of the data analyzed showed that there was a significant difference between the results of the pre test and post test. The mean score of the pretest of the experimental class was 49.99 while the control one was 52.54 after giving the treatment. The mean score of the experimental class in the post test was 79.50 and the control one was 67.13. By applying 0.05 level of significance, the researcher found that the value of the t-counted (3.91) was higher than the t-table (2.0399). It means that the use of the SQ3R method can improve the reading comprehension of grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Palu
APPLYING TABOO GAME IN IMPROVING VOCABULARY MASTERY OF GRADE VII STUDENTS OF SMPN 4 LUWUK
This research aims to prove that applying taboo games can improve the vocabulary mastery of grade seven students of SMP Negeri 4 Luwuk. The research applied pre-experimental design. The population was 88 students in the academic year 2022/2023. The samples were 28 students selected employing purposive sampling technique. A vocabulary test was used when collecting the data for this research. The test was administered twice, namely pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed statistically using a .05 level of significance and 28 degrees of freedom. The data analysis found that the students’ mean score on the pre-test was 56.27, lower than the post-test’s mean score, 79.17. A comparison of the two tests of scale describes that t-counted value = 12.241> t-table value = 1.701. Therefore, Hawas accepted, and Ho was rejected. It can be concluded that applying taboo games improve the students’ vocabulary mastery
