The computational semantics of characters
In this paper we present a new approach to the computational semantics of characters, which fills this gap: the orthographic projection of linguistic information, analogous to phonetic interpretation. We consider a number of use cases prior to discussion of three different perspectives. Adopting a holistic view of semantics, we discover that there are properties at this lower level which require similar specification to that at more well-studied levels, and which can coherently extend computational linguistic models to the domain of orthography
Synonyms in contrast. A dynamic and descriptive resource for new semantic equivalents
This paper introduces “Synonyms in Contrast”, a new online dictionary that addresses the complexities and nuances of neologistic (near-) synonyms in the German language. The emergence of new lexical items, often borrowings from English, has contributed to the proliferation of meaning equivalents. These share a large extent of contextual features, causing ambiguity and uncertainty among speakers regarding their appropriate usage. The dictionary, which is part of the new IDS Neo2020+ resource, distinguishes itself by utilising corpus-driven and corpus-based approached and sophisticated lexicographic methods such as word embeddings to provide users with comprehensive, context-sensitive information on semantic similarities and differences between new synonyms. This resource aims to aid in the clear understanding of new terms, their usage, and interrelations by detailing their semantic overlaps, distinctive contexts, and collocational preferences. Through a combination of empirical data and user-specified presentation, the dictionary facilitates better linguistic decisions in both everyday and also more specialised communication. The ultimate goal is to enhance the integration of new lexical variants into the mental lexicon of German speakers by offering a reliable, dynamic, and descriptive platform for exploring and resolving lexical uncertainties with respect to meaning equivalents that have recently emerged
Epistemische Architekturen von Texten. Zur linguistischen Beschreibung der Schnittstellen von diskursiver Formation und individuellen Plausibilitätsurteilen
In the article, I propose that considering established concepts from text linguistics, such as propositions and text worlds, more systematically can be fruitful for a discourse pragmatic analysis that aims to describe knowledge constitution. Drawing from the model proposed by Werth (1999) in his text-world theory, I introduce the concept of epistemic architecture and demonstrate its usefulness by closely analyzing two texts from the discourse on pesticide use in Germany. The analysis shows differences in the integration of relevant propositions into the epistemic architecture that can be interpreted as meaningful when trying to understand discursive knowledge constitution

What is Unserdeutsch?
Unserdeutsch ist ein sprachliches Produkt der deutschen Kolonialzeit, eine sogenannte Kreolsprache. Es ist eine aus intensivem Sprachkontakt hervorgegangene Sprache, deren Wortschatz zwar weitestgehend Deutsch anmutet, deren Grammatik, Satzbau und sogar deren Lautung aber in weiten Teilen einer anderen Sprache entsprechen. Das heißt: Unserdeutsch klingt zwar deutsch, ist es aber strukturell nicht.Unserdeutsch is a linguistic product of the German colonial period, a so-called creole language. It is a language that resulted from intense cultural contract, where the vocabulary seems largely German, but the grammar, sentence structure, and even phonetics correspond to another language. This means: Unserdeutsch might sound German, but in structural terms it is a different language
How exceptional is CP recursion in Germanic OV languages? Corpus-based evidence from Middle Low German
CP recursion, i.e. verb fronting to a lower CP in complement clauses selected by bridge verbs, is considered typical for the Germanic languages with VO basic order (Danish, Faroese, Norwegian and Swedish) but exceptional in those with underlying OV structure, with Frisian being the only modern OV language displaying this property. His- torical evidence has been taken to weaken the exceptional status of CP-recursion in OV languages, but the data is sparse or provides no diagnostics allowing for a safe interpretation of the facts. In this paper, we want to present historical data from an OV language that helps us to overcome this empirical problem. Data search in a small syntactically annotated corpus from Middle Low German (MLG) produced examples for complement clauses including a complementizer, in which the verb is in second position, following a non-subject constituent. Additionally, the clauses contain typical middle field elements suggesting that the verb has left the VP and targeted the C-domain of the clause. Following these considerations, we argue in favour of an analysis of these orders as instances of CP recursion, which in turn suggests that it is not exceptional in OV languages. This pilot study is meant to emphasize both the relevance of MLG in research on comparative Germanic syntax as well as the role of historical corpora in solving open issues in theoretical linguistics
Register contact: an exploration of recent linguistic trends in the scientific domain
In this paper, we present a study of selected lexico-grammatical features showing pos- sible diachronic linguistic trends in specialized academic domains that have emerged by contact with computer science (computational linguistics, bioinformatics, digital construction, microelectronics). The data basis for this study is the English Scientific Text Corpus (SciTex) which covers a time range of roughly thirty years (70/80s to early 2000s) (Degaetano et al. 2013).1 In particular, we are looking for trends of linguistic standardization and diversification across the disciplines under investigation. The theoretical framework we use as a basis is Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and its specific incarnation of register theory (Halliday/Hasan 1985)
Korpuslinguistische Wege der Untersuchung von Emotionen im Deutschen und Tschechischen
In dieser Studie wird gezeigt, wie verschiedene Arten von Korpora für die Untersuchung von Emotionen genutzt werden können. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die kontrastive Analyse von Emotionen geleg
