The use of past tense formats in German talk-in-interaction
The present chapter investigates three frequent German verbs, finden ‘to find’, glauben ‘to believe’, and meinen ‘to mean’ in first and third person preterite and present perfect. Prior research on past tense distribution primarily identifies regional variation as a driving force (Fischer 2018) or treats preterite and present perfect as ‘interchangeable’ (Helbig & Buscha 2001). I test these assumptions by investigating a large corpus of German talk-in-interaction. My findings show that speakers use lexico-syntactic constructions consisting of past tense formats and specific grammatical components to implement distinct actions. Identifying these paste tense constructions, I demonstrate that tense is not only a ‘traditional’ grammatical category but also crucial for implementing social actions, thus constituting an indispensable part of a grammar for talk-in-interaction
In its first part, the present paper presents an interactional linguistic study of the pragmatic marker wollt grad sagen (‘I was going to say’). This marker shows a high degree of formal, functional and contextual variation. It is used within four different practices, which we term affirmation, disclosure, reassurance and resumption. Each practice has a set of typical lexical and syntactic realization forms as well as a typical position within a turn and a conversational sequence. The second part of the paper explores the possibility of using meta data categories included in the Research and Teaching Corpus of Spoken German (FOLK) in order to investigate the distribution of different variants of the pragmatic marker under investigation across three social categories (interactional domain, region, and gender). We find that the pragmatic marker is associated with private, largely informal interactions. The associations with the categories region and gender are hard to interpret, as the corpus is not balanced with regard to these categories and the total number of instances of the marker is too small for a more advanced quantification. Nevertheless, the study demonstrates how interactional linguistic and variational pragmatic research questions can be integrated methodologically
Querying Spoken Language Data
This chapter is about query mechanisms for spoken language corpora as
used in different fields of linguistics. After discussing properties specific to this type of data and setting it apart from written language (see Evert et al. 2025), an overview of existing technology and approaches to standardisation for querying spoken language data is provided. The chapter concludes by illustrating some of the concepts in more detail using the FOLK corpus in the ZuMult platform as an example
The paper addresses the concept of crisis in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Through a comparative analysis, it first examines the distinctive linguistic features of the words ‘Krise’, ‘Krisenmodus’, and крии́за (kryza) describing their usage in German and Ukrainian. The paper then explores how the media report on Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the related crises, focusing on the themes covered in this context. While German media predominantly address crises in political, economic, and social terms, Ukrainian media emphasize existential threats and the resilience of the population. A key part of the analysis involves the evaluation of two articles from German and Ukrainian media. It becomes clear how differently the discourse on the war of aggression is framed: the German article focuses on the economic and political impacts of the war and potential solutions, while the Ukrainian article centers on the survival of the people and the defense of freedom. The aim of our paper is to present different conceptions of crises and contribute to the study of crisis rhetoric and media discourse strategies. The focus is on linguistic and discursive differences, but also on cultural factors that characterise crisis communication. The analysis is based on examples of journalistic texts, but provides impulses for further studies on media crisis perception in conflict and war situations
Pointing at others as an embodied connection device: linking back to prior talk in multi-party interaction
This paper discusses an embodied strategy for making topical connections transparent by utilizing the co-presence of interlocutors: Pointing at co-participants. Building on previous research on common ground-related pointing gestures, I demonstrate that index finger pointing can be used to link back to prior parts of a conversation associated with the person being pointed to. This creates cohesion between discourse units in naturally occurring conversation. As the analysis shows, gestural backlinking can be done in sequential proximity to the conversational reference point, but also across longer distances of talk so that an earlier thread of conversation is picked up again. Pointing can thus be used to refer to the personal common ground accumulated over a shared interactional history. This discourse deictic usage of pointing is found mainly in pre-turn and turn-initial position and helps navigate the topical landscape in multi-party interactions. Data comes from naturally occurring German conversations
Open Access as Social Practice. The Political of, and Experiences with Applied Linguistics Publishing
This paper examines the growing movement towards open access (OA) in research, emphasizing its role in democratizing knowledge amid rising misinformation. Despite OA’s benefits, disparities in access remain across disciplines and economic contexts. Focusing on applied linguists, we investigate how OA as a media practice intersects with social hierarchies and access barriers through a questionnaire survey. Our findings indicate that while OA improves access for readers, it may also reinforce inequalities among authors. We situate our analysis within broader discussions on the reconfiguration of public space and Jacques Rancière’s “distribution of the sensible”, and advocate for evolving OA frameworks to ensure equitable knowledge dissemination in the humanities and social sciences
SpruchList. Korpusbasiertes Referenzinventar von Sprichwörtern und Sprüchen im Deutschen. Elektronische Ressource
SpruchList...
