Coding actions in social interaction: Potentials and problems
This paper deals with one object of coding that is particularly troublesome, the coding of actions. We argue that action-coding within the framework of Conversation Analysis (CA) necessarily leads to problems due to an inherent tension between criteria for good coding schemes and the properties of action in social interaction. While coding schemes require clear definitions of codes, their mutual exclusivity, irreversibility, comprehensiveness and stable coding units, action ascription is characterized by indexicality, multi-layeredness, potentially different understandings of producer vs. recipients, temporality, malleability of units and situatedness. Drawing on several studies involving action-coding, we discuss five recurrent problems of action-coding, which arise from properties of social interaction: the level of abstraction of the action-categorization, multiple and ambiguous actions, actions that do not receive uptake, crossover cases, and problems of data-segmentation. We explain the nature of the problems, present data-examples, and discuss possible solutions. Data are in German
Songkorpus - Linguistic Corpus of German Song Lyrics. Release 7.0 vom 22.02.2025. Elektronische Ressource
Just as pop music has evolved from a youth cultural phenomenon into an integral part of modern culture, its lyrical content has become increasingly present in everyday language. Reflecting the high communicative impact of pop lyrics, the Corpus of Song Lyrics ("Songkorpus") offers a sustainably usable, multilayer-annotated collection of more than 15,000 texts that exhibit characteristics of both written and spoken discourse. It is designed for linguistic research and is also relevant to related disciplines such as cultural and literary studies, the social sciences, media studies and musicology, all of which share a scholarly interest in the language of contemporary German song lyrics
When excuse me means excuse you! On sanctioning others by ‘excusing’ oneself and relationships between form-based practices of speaking
This article examines the use of excuse me as a practice for invoking the complainability of another person’s conduct in the service of sanctioning it as misconduct. It explores how a form that semantically expresses its speaker’s desire to be excused (excuse me ) can be used to flag another person’s doings as transgressive or untoward. It is proposed that, to elucidate this puzzle, it is necessary to adopt a more holistic perspective and to incorporate other uses of the format (e.g., in other-initiated repair, as an attention-drawing device), as well as possible relationships between them, into the analysis. The paper offers a sketch of such a more holistic, integrative account. This account revolves around the idea that practices of speaking that mobilize similar or even the same linguistic resources implicate partially overlapping sets of affordances for action which link different usages together in a larger pragmatic landscape. As such, form-based practices of speaking and the various actions they can implement exhibit demonstrable relationships across different domains of use which may need to be taken into account when thinking about a practice’s fit to the action it implements. One of the key benefits of such an approach is that it allows for mapping out larger pragmatic landscapes and to move beyond the isolated description of individual practices of speaking
The paper presents a digital teaching and learning unit for grammar of spoken German. This is part of the LernGrammis project at the Leibniz-Institute for German Language (Mannheim), which aims at giving an adaptive, low-threshold access to German language grammar knowledge. Using the example of the learning unit “Spoken German”, the paper shows how the didactic-aimed processing of corpus data makes this possible. For spoken language, the latter are particularly relevant. Nevertheless, their higher difficulty compared to constructed examples might hinder their use for didactic purposes. The paper addresses and discusses some possible solutions in this respect
User-oriented guidelines for data ingest
In this deliverable, partner institutions describe their established workflows for data ingest into their data repositories. As these repositories predate the attempts at creating a consolidated national research data infrastructure and the Text+ project in particular, the approaches and procedures vary to some degree

Zweitspracherwerb in Dialektregionen.
