Novel methods of intensification in young people’s digitally-mediated communication
Get PDFThe following chapter proposes a typology of intensification in German digitally-mediated communication (DMC). Intensification has been conventionally understood as a lexicogrammatical process modifying the quality of an element in a sentence – either amplifying or diminishing it – through the use of another element known as an intensifier. However, developments within DMC have seen intensification strategies progress beyond a traditional understanding of the concept and even beyond grammatical categorisation. Using authentic data from the NottDeuYTSch corpus of YouTube comments, the chapter classifies intensification in five categories: morphological, syntactic, expressive, graphemic, and typographical, and explores elements containing multiple aspects of intensification. The typology of intensification presented in this chapter showcases the creative usage of digital resources and how this can influence our understanding of traditional linguistic concepts

Die Sichtung linguistischer Analysen zum Thema ermöglicht eine sachliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phänomen. Eine Erörterung des Normbegriffs problematisiert das Verhältnis von Standard und Abweichung. Die Berücksichtigung der Angemessenheit eines Ausdrucks erweitert die Diskussion um den pragmastilistischen Aspekt sowie um denjenigen der individuellen Kreativität. Family language dynamics: Strengthening heritage speakers' linguistic resources
Get PDFResearch on heritage languages is not only empirically and theoretically relevant: It also touches a nerve with families, minority speech communities and educators, teachers and other agents within the majority language educational and health systems. This contribution presents the rationale of a specific transfer project based on the findings of the Research Unit Emerging Grammars in Language Contact Situations (RUEG) as well as on multilingualism research in general. The need for differentiated outreach activities is highlighted; first steps of implementation in close cooperation with non-academic partners and their target groups are addressed. Target groups include parents with very rudimentary to excellent majority language skills, professionals providing advice to parents or involved in language fostering as well as instructors in qualifying programs for educators and teachers. Initiatives include workshops, video lectures, interviews and other material, eventually all available online via www.ruegram.de as well as suggestions for specific citizen science activities already conducted or under way
Subject properties in early modern Germanic languages. A contrastive corpus-based study
No full textThis monograph is devoted to the cross-linguistic profile of subjects in Early Modern Germanic languages. The typologically complex question of subject criteria is addressed in a functional framework relying on recent developments in Construction Grammar. The set of data is extracted from a parallel corpus made up of the 1587 German chapbook about the life of Dr. Faustus and its English, Dutch and Danish translations, all of which had been published by 1592. At that time, the syntactic features of English subjects were still comparable to Continental languages like Danish, facilitating the inclusion of English in a cross-Germanic analysis.
The analysis makes use of two comparative concepts of subjecthood; argumental subjecthood, centred on the argument-structural characteristics of subjects, and informational subjecthood, which corresponds to the syntacticization of information-structural properties. Subjecthood is defined as a labile multi-level configuration of argumental and informational parameters. This approach sheds new light on notorious tricks of Germanic syntax such as oblique subjects, expletives, scrambling and subjectless passives

The emergence of CORE-ILCA as an interactionally organized social phenomenon
No full textThis paper analyzes CORE-ILCA (virtual community of early career researchers – ECRs – in Interactional Linguistics, Ethnomethodology & Conversation Analysis – ILEMCA) as a social phenomenon. On an international level, ECRs often do not have many opportunities to interact except for large conferences. These are often expensive and not easily attainable for everyone, let alone on a regular basis. In times of Covid-19, networking has become even harder and many ECRs lack intellectual exchange and social contact with their peers.
To answer the famous analytical question “Why that now?” (Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson 1974): our phenomenon, CORE-ILCA, which has emerged only recently, allows ECRs to connect, work together, share and multiply knowledge, create a mutual support network and strengthen collaborations and friendships between ECRs around the globe. In the words of CORE-ILCA: “/prəˈɡres/ together while being constantly in /’prəʊɡres/”.
The idea of building a community sprouted after a joint online gathering in March 2020, when the pandemic led to an almost Europe-wide lockdown with universities and libraries shut down. After a few weeks, a first group of ECRs built an exchange platform, held a first meeting, and agreed an organizational structure to move forward.
In this article, we want to show that CORE-ILCA is a social phenomenon that is interactionally organized. We will start from its emergence and evolution throughout 2020 (§2), then present the participants and our methodology (§3), describe CORE-ILCA’s organizational structure and principles (§4), and finally conclude with an outlook on further activity desiderata of the community (§5)

No full textDer Beitrag stellt den Blick einer Praktikerin mit linguistischem Hintergrund Wimmer'scher Schulung auf die berufsspezifische Kommunikation in einer Pressestelle dar. Im Fokus des Interesses steht die erfolgreiche Kommunikation mit Journalisten. Um zu klären, wie Sprache von Seiten einer Pressestelle eingesetzt wird, um aus ihrer Sicht erfolgreich zu handeln, wird zunächst die Kommunikationssituation näher beleuchtet. Anhand der genretypischen Textsorten „Pressemitteilung“, „Einladung zu einem Pressetermin“ und „schriftliches Pressematerial“ werden dann sprachliche Handlungsstrategien herausgearbeitet und erläutert
