Why so cold and distant? Effects of inter-turn gap durations on observers’ attributions of interpersonal stance

    Get PDF
Gaps between turns of talk in fluent conversation are typically very short, while longer gaps often indicate ‘trouble’ (e.g., upcoming disagreement with a prior assessment). Listeners use this timing cue to infer respondents’ stance, e.g., their willingness to comply with a request. We tested whether gap durations also influence attributions of interpersonal affective stances ("cold and distant reaction") and whether listeners flexibly adjust their temporal threshold of tolerance to speaker characteristics (native language: L1 vs. L2). We constructed short German dialogues that contained critical question-response pairs; we manipulated the duration of inter-turn gaps and whether the respondent was a native vs. non-native speaker of German. Participants listened to these critical question-response pairs and judged "how cold and distant the respondent reacts". Bayesian mixed-effects regression revealed that longer-than-average gaps increased attributions of interpersonal distance as well as participants’ response times, whereas respondents’ nativeness affected participants’ judgments but not their response times. Our results did not confirm the predicted interaction of gap duration and nativeness, thus failing to support the idea that these attributional inferences are delayed or attenuated for non-native respondents. Among the phonetic parameters we controlled for, we find that the duration of the response token affected judgments of interpersonal distance, presumably reflecting that very short responses convey curtness. We conclude that listeners use the duration of inter-turn silence and other phonetic parameters as well as general speaker characteristics as heuristic cues to respondents’ interpersonal affective stance

Unlocking the corpus. Enriching metadata with state-of-the-art NLP methodology and linked data

    Get PDF
In research data management, metadata are indispensable to describing data and are a key element in preparing data according to the FAIR principles. Metadata in catalogues and registries are usually recorded either by archivists or subject matter experts, i.e. researchers involved in the creation or assembling of the data, or provided in the data preparation workflow. Extracting metadata from textual research data is currently not part of most metadata workflows, even more so if a research data set can be subdivided into smaller parts, such as a newspaper corpus containing multiple newspaper articles. If we look at descriptive metadata from a large corpus of newspapers, the basic metadata may consist of information, for example, about the title, or year of publication. Our approach is to add semantic metadata on the text level to facilitate the search over data. We show how to enrich metadata with three methods: named entity recognition, keyword extraction, and topic modeling. The goal is to make it possible to search for texts that are about certain topics or described using certain keywords or to identify people, places, and organisations mentioned in texts without actually having to read them

Request for confirmation sequences in Czech

    Get PDF
This article provides a first description of request for confirmation (RfC) sequences in spoken Czech. Based on 204 sequences from video-recorded ordinary conversations, it provides a quantitative overview of the main syntactic, lexical, prosodic and sequential features of both requests for confirmation and their responses. RfCs in Czech are typically of declarative clausal format, realized in positive polarity, and receive a confirmation. The epistemic asymmetry between the speaker of the RfC and their interlocutor seems to be mainly expressed and negotiated by a complex taxonomy of tags appended to the confirmable, response tokens, and syntactically non-minimal responses. These features represent promising topics for future, more qualitatively oriented investigations of RfCs in spoken Czech

In this contribution, we report on ongoing efforts in the German national research infrastructure consortium Text+ to make research data and services for text- and language-oriented disciplines FAIR, that is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable, as well as compliant with the CARE principles for language resources

Eine Vorstudie zur Eignung von Llama 3-8B für eine Sentimentanalyse

    No full text

Modeling and Measuring Short Text Similarities. On the Multi-Dimensional Differences between German Poetry of Realism and Modernism

    No full text
This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on how to operationalize text similarity for the purposes of computational literary studies by defining, justifying theoretically and employing a multi-dimensional text model. Additionally, we evaluate a set of strategies to implement this model for very short texts like poetry using a range of methods from weighted sparse vectors up to very recent neural sentence embeddings based on annotations of emotions, genre and similarity. And finally, we show the relevance of using such a complex text model by applying the best method to a research question about the development of early modernism in German poetry. While we can confirm some important hypotheses from literary studies, we are also able to differentiate or relativize others. In particular, our findings do not support the widely held thesis that the change from realism to modernism was a revolutionary 'rupture'

PhrasKomp. Korpusbasiertes Inventar nominaler Phrasenkomposita(muster) im Deutschen (Version 1.0). Elektronische Ressource

    No full text
