Studies of villages in several countries show an increasing trend regarding the success of village economic development. However, developing the rural economy in a developing country like Indonesia needs more insight into its investigations. This article discusses the success factors for economic development at the village level, especially in Indonesia's new era of village development. This study used a qualitative method by interviewing several informants, observing, and collecting secondary data in two villages, Sanankerto and Pujon Kidul, Malang Regency. We found that village transformation in recent years has strengthened villages independence in managing their economies and contributing to the welfare of village communities. The existence of Village Economic Enterprise (BUMDes), in this case, acts as the main driving force that plays a role in the development of the village economy. Some factors contributed to the transformation of the village and the success of the village's economic development, namely strong entrepreneurial leadership, institutional reform, inclusiveness, and community participation. This study has significantly contributed to improving economic governance at the village level

Urbanization and Climate Resilience: How is Vulnerability and Poverty in Makassar

This article examines how the processes of urbanization and climate resilience are related to vulnerability and poverty. This article aims to determine the correlation between climate resilience, vulnerability, and poverty. From a methodological point of view, this is qualitative research using the collection of documents, such as the Regional Action Plan for Climate Change Adaptation-Disaster Risk Reduction (RAD API-PRB) and documents from government websites. The findings of this study illustrate that urbanization followed by development impacts land-use change. Land degradation due to urbanization and climate change will have direct human impacts due to extreme events and increased vulnerability, with significant environmental, economic, and social consequences for communities, particularly the poorest communities, who are most vulnerable. We suggest developing ways to reduce vulnerability through strategic management planning to reduce exposure to stress, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity

Fighting Over the Bangka Sea: The Tin Mining Conflict in the Marine Area of Bangka Regency

Abstract: The tin mining conflict in the marine area of Bangka Regency involves four main actors: the government and PT Timah as the spearhead of the tin exploitation, illegal miners, fishermen, and tourism businessmen. This research uses qualitative methods by collecting data through in-depth interviews and literature studies. This article found that economic factors are accounted for by the node that equalizes the motives of actors to be present in the socio-economic dynamics of the region. However, there are two different patterns of sea utilization, namely tin mining, which causes damage to 57.09% of coral reefs, reduces fishing hauls and threatens 16,000 traditional fishermen who depend on the sea for fishing, and the development of tourism, which requires the maintenance of marine ecosystems, on the other hand, it can cause conflict between actors. The unequal power network between actors causes the distribution of benefits over the sea in Bangka Regency to be unsatisfactory. The operationalization of state power through spatial arrangements in the form of mining business licenses has made the state the actor that receives the most economic benefits. Relations with state actors in the workings of the shadow state allow illegal miners to gain economic benefits because they can be connected to the global tin business chain. On the other hand, the combination of the lack of power, pseudo-participation in policy formation, and the stalemate of alternative participation has resulted in the marginalization of fishermen.

Under Jokowi’s presidency, the BRI project was able to further strengthen the bilateral ties between Indonesia and China. This study aims to analyse and focus on: first, the pros and cons of Indonesia's interests in the BRI projects under Jokowi's presidency; second, the political leadership of Jokowi in managing and implementing BRI projects in Indonesia. This study used a qualitative approach to gather comprehensive data through a literature review. As an analytical tool for this research, the author used the political leadership theory by Kalevi Jaakko Holsti. The finding showed that, first, those who are pro-BRI will provide full support, supervision, and evaluation from year to year. Meanwhile, there are several cons to the BRI project due to fear of the debt trap, the influx of Chinese workers, the environmental damage, the overlapping maritime claims, anti-communist sentiment, and the image of Chinese products. The negative sentiment towards the BRI project can be eased with a soft-infrastructure approach that touches community (people-to-people) bonds. Second, regarding Jokowi's eight-year leadership, Jokowi's type of political leadership is more directed as a conciliator, especially in the China BRI project. It is based on Jokowi's record of making China a good partner and big brother

The Relations Between Muslim Community and Prostitution in Bandungan

This study aims to explain how the relationship between Muslim communities and prostitution is present in everyday social life, especially in the prostitution area of Bandungan, Semarang Regency. With the case study research method, the authors conducted observations, documentation, and structured and unstructured interviews simultaneously with prostitution business actors, Muslim associations, and local government actors. As for the findings, first, the relationship between society and prostitution has been socially shaped over a very long period, not something that appears instantly. The gradual social change from the colonial era to the emergence of tourism gave rise to the characteristics of prostitution, which were relatively different from the localization models of prostitution in other regions. Second, the relationship between the Muslim community and prostitution is intertwined in social relations because of intertwined economic interests. Third, social disharmony is still present despite social harmony, especially in the relations of citizens who do not depend on their economic interests in the prostitution business, especially among people who are affiliated with Muslim organizations. This study concludes that the relationship between the Muslim community and prostitution occurs dynamically, which is still contradictory but has no conflict with each other

Public Infrastructural Decay as An Impediment to Effective Performance

This study identified the various public infrastructural facilities—power, health, and information and communication technology (ICT)—that aid the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in performing their duty effectively. It also examined how public infrastructural decay renders Nigeria’s public service handicapped in its ability to effectively execute its goals. It adopts a survey research design technique, and a questionnaire was used to gather data. The primary data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, while the hypothesis was tested using Pearson correlation analysis. The sample size was determined by the convenience nonprobability sampling method, and questionnaires were distributed to the respondents. The scope of the study is the FRSC Zone RS 8 Headquarters, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The result shows that there is a weak positive relationship between adequate public infrastructural facilities and effective performance in Nigeria’s public service. It also revealed that the effective performance of Nigeria’s public service is aided by adequate public infrastructural facilities. Likewise, inadequate public infrastructural facilities slow down the effective performance of Nigeria’s public service. The study recommended that public infrastructural facilities should be taken as vital tools to enhance Nigeria’s public service performance and that public infrastructural decay should be tackled

Development of Military Role in Indonesian Government

The presence of the military in the history of the Indonesian government has long strengthened Indonesia's independence. The military itself has had various impacts on the Indonesian government, including acceptable impacts, good impacts, and bad impacts. Indonesia is trying to create a professional military, which could increase demotions and reduce the military's opportunities for politics. However, there are many obstacles that hinder the success of a professional military and reduce the military's influence in the Indonesian government. After the era of demands for reform and the dismissal of the military from the government, people began to realize that it was difficult for the government and the military to become one. If forced, there will be dysfunction in government institutions. This analytical study concerns the need for a supervisory role in order to improve civil-military relations. Continuous and ongoing monitoring can improve civil-military relations and achieve democratization in civil-military relations. However, until now, the supervision between civilians and the military has not gone well. This happens because of the minimal participation of the government, which supervises and regulates the military, so that there is no arbitrariness in carrying out its duties and relations with civil society
