The Use of Contextual Teaching and Learning in Writing Subjects: A Case Study of the Second Year Students at SDN 3 Bareng Lor Klaten in 2013/2014
Get PDFIn Globalization era, English becomes one of the crucial subjects to be taught. Generally, it is taught from the Elementary schools level to university levels. To be a creative and innovative teacher are important things to develop students’ ability because English is a foreign language. One of the method is to use CTL in teaching and Learning. The objective of this study is to find out about teaching and learning writing using contextual teaching and Learning (CTL) in the second year at SD N 3 Barenglor. The writer observed and made interview to the teacher and students to get data and the process of teaching and Learning using CTL. The object of this study involved 30 students; consist of 13 male students (boys) and 17 female 17 students (girls). The results show that CTL is used in teaching and Learning in SD N 3 Barenglor and CTL had succesfully improved the motivation of the students to study English. Transgender Community and Its Slang Words
Get PDFThe purpose of this research is to describe slang words used in transgender community in Salatiga, the meaning, how to form and the functions. This is the descriptive qualitative method. The data are from natural communication taking among transgenders. The source of data is transgender community in the form of oral data. The results of the studyshows that transgender slang words is formed by borrowing syllables of Javanese and Indonesian language, adding with specific affixes, or changing into other common words. Transgender community inserts the slang words into Javanese language and use Javanese language structure to form their utterances. They use it as a secret code and also solidaritymarker inside the groups or between the group and other groups.Keywords: Slang words; Transgender community; Function of slang word
The Interlanguage Interference on the Difficulties of Building Question Sentences by the Second Year Students of MA As Soorkaty Salatiga
Get PDFThis study is aimed to elaborate the interlanguage interference of the difficulties which are faced by 40 second year students of MA As Soorkaty Salatiga in academic year of 2004-2005 in building question sentences and the sources of difficulties. The research is conducted by such kind of test. The total number of test are 20 items, consist of 5 yes-no questions, 5 W-H questions, and 10 tag questions which is done in a written essay form. Based on the analysis, the result shows some conclusions. Firstly, the researcher finds the types of difficulties problems are faced by the students in building question mastery, such as: (1) building yes-no question sentences in translation the word “apakah”, that is related with the use of to be. (2) Building interrogative word question sentences in translation the words “apa”, “kapan”, “milik siapa”, etc. That are related with the use of “what”, “when”, “whose”, etc. (3) Completing the tag question sentences with the proper auxiliary based on tense of the sentences. The most difficulties in building question sentences are especially in yes-no question form by using the word “apakah”. In the term of interlanguage, the students’ errors are mostly included in expressing meaning by the words and grammar of the first language. The source of difficulties which have been analyzed are mostly caused by inter lingual and intra lingual transfer. The Analysis of English Word Formations Used on Brand Names Found in Indonesian Products
Get PDFThis research aims at describing how brand names with English inIndonesian products are created. To analyze the data found theresearchers applied English word formation in English morphology. Thisis a descriptive research. The data were brand names using English foundin Indonesian product which were taken from three supermarkets in Solonamely Hypermart Solo Grand Mall, Hypermart Gorro Assalam, andCarefur from February up to April 2010. The research found that thebrand names with English in Indonesian products can be created byapplying word formation such as compounding, blending, affixation,reduplication, onomatopoeia, abbreviation, acronym and clipping. Theprocess of compounding consists of pure compounding and modificationcompounding, The process of blending includes the first syllable of thefirst words and the first syllable of the second words, the first syllable ofthe first words and the second syllable from the front of the secondwords., the first words and the last syllables of the second words, the firstwords and two syllables from the front of the second words, twosyllables from the front of the first words and the second words, twosyllables from the front of the first words and the first syllable of thesecond words, the first words and the two last syllables from the back ofthe second words, and the first words and the first syllables of the second words. The affixation process covers prefixes pro-, -bio and suffixes –y, -er, -ness, -ish, and –s. The process of reduplication includes puremodification, modification with intensifier meaning and reduplicationwith sound change. The process of abbreviation found is pureabbreviation and acronym. The Attitudes of Students from ESL and EFL Countries to English
Get PDFThis research is to study the attitudes of English students from English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) country in English and Foreign Languages University (EFL University), Hyderabad to English. This is a descriptive-quantitative research with a survey method. The attitudes researched include those to listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The data was taken through questionnaireconsisting of 20 questions. The findings of this study showed that the English students in EFL University have neutral-to-positive attitudes to Listening, positive attitudes to Speaking, positive attitudes to Reading, and poor attitudes to Writing. In addition, the English students from ESL country have better attitudes to Reading (positive) and Writing (neutral)and those from EFL country have better attitudes to Speaking (neutral-topositive)and Listening (neutral-to-positive). Psychological Structural Analysis to “A Child Called It” by Dave Pelzer
Get PDFThis paper attempts to explore a child abuse, the reason and the effect of the character’s psychological development using the theory of psychological development and structural analysis. Two approaches are used in this paper. Those are structural approach and psychology, especially developmental psychology approach. The first approach focuses on literary intrinsic elements. The second approach focuses on the character’s psychological development based on the developmental stages and tasks. Those are integrated into a psychological structural analysis. The result shows that child abuse that experienced by David is physical and psychological. He got the first stage of abuse commited by his mother who didn’t give him food and the last stage evidenced by some physical abuses when he lived with his mother. Autonomous Learning Writing Promoted by the Use of Facebook Group

One of them is in the education and learning sector. This qualitative research explored the role of a Facebook group to increase students' autonomy in learning writing. The experiment was conducted with qualitative methodology to 6 students as a sample. The process of data collection is done through the media Facebook group which was developed during the data collection through observation and interviews. The research lasted for 30(thirty) days in which researchers became the administrator and facilitator. From the process of collecting and analyzing the data assumed that Facebook group influenced the autonomy and promote independent of students learning in writing. Applicability of Model Assessment for Learning (AFL) in Classes of Vocabulary and Pragmatics in English Teaching Learning at STAIN Salatiga
Get PDFThe research objective is to see the applicability of Assessment for Learning (AFL) in the classes of vocabulary and pragmatics. The subjects of the research were students and lecturers of Vocabulary 3 and Pragmatics classes. The research was conducted in State Islamic Studies Institute (STAIN) Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia. The results of theresearch indicate that AfL could assess the class activities comprehensively. It could assess teacher and students‘ behavior in the class. The teacher guides the class from preparing the class, delivering materials and evaluating the class. Meanwhile students‘ behavior in theclasses of pragmatics is better then in vocabulary. Students who express positive behavior in the classes of vocabulary are in the range of 30% - 60% and around 80 – 90s % in pragmatics.Keywords: assessment for learning; evaluation; vocabulary; pragmatics; English teaching learnin
