Data-driven value creation from businesses to consumers: aligning strategies to inform development and design of data-driven services
Data-driven business models are increasingly changing how businesses generate value, shape customer relationships, and secure competitive advantages. In doing so, businesses face the challenge of integrating data operationally and using it strategically. At the same time, data-driven services increasingly penetrate consumers' lives, influencing and collecting data from their consumption practices. This raises the question of how data-driven services can be designed to create added value for businesses and consumers. Based on the three derived concepts of Business-Data, Consumer-Data, and Business-Consumer Alignment, this thesis addresses this interface by examining the perspectives of businesses and consumers on data-driven services. As a coordination process between business and data strategy, two research papers on Business-Data Alignment examine the challenges businesses face in developing data-driven services. Three papers focus on Consumer-Data Alignment by analyzing the way consumers interact with data-driven services and how data influences their everyday practices. In addition, two research papers develop methodological tools to support Business-Consumer Alignment as a cooperative coordination process between businesses and consumers to achieve common goals and values in designing data-driven services. This thesis bridges theory and practice by deriving action-oriented principles and tools to address strategic and operational challenges in designing data-driven services, contributing to the research domains of Information Systems, Consumer Informatics, Recommender Systems, and Reputation Systems. - Information Systems: This work expands the understanding of data-driven value creation by specifying the strategic link between business and data strategies through Business-Data Alignment. From the perspective of businesses, technical challenges, such as the integration of heterogeneous data sources, and organizational hurdles, such as a lack of data literacy, are addressed. The developed Data Service Canvas and Data Storytelling Process represent practical frameworks that support companies in strategically planning and communicating data-driven business models and services. - Consumer Informatics: This thesis examines the consumer perspective to show how data-driven services shape consumers' everyday consumption practices and how consumers can be involved as active designers of user-centered data-driven services. Concrete design principles based on consumers' needs and practices are also derived for the domains of food and mobility. - Recommender Systems: This work conducts a case study in the food domain in the Recommender Systems research area to show how personalized and value-oriented recommendations can be designed to better support critical consumption practices, such as sustainable or ethical consumption. - Reputation Systems: In the research domain of Reputation Systems, this thesis explores trust-building in the sharing economy, specifically in peer-to-peer carsharing, by examining an algorithm-based trust mechanism to complement user ratings. Evaluating a prototypical algorithm-based reputation system shows how algorithmic ratings can be made transparent and understandable and how such systems can contribute to fair and comprehensible assessments

Reliable Robotic Task Execution in the Face of Anomalies
Learned robot policies have consistently been shown to be versatile, but they typically have no built-in mechanism for handling the complexity of open environments, making them prone to execution failures; this implies that deploying policies without the ability to recognise and react to failures may lead to unreliable and unsafe robot behaviour. In this paper, we present a framework that couples a learned policy with a method to detect visual anomalies during policy deployment and to perform recovery behaviours when necessary, thereby aiming to prevent failures. Specifically, we train an anomaly detection model using data collected during nominal executions of a trained policy. This model is then integrated into the online policy execution process, so that deviations from the nominal execution can trigger a three-level sequential recovery process that consists of (i) pausing the execution temporarily, (ii) performing a local perturbation of the robot's state, and (iii) resetting the robot to a safe state by sampling from a learned execution success model. We verify our proposed method in two different scenarios: (i) a door handle reaching task with a Kinova Gen3 arm using a policy trained in simulation and transferred to the real robot, and (ii) an object placing task with a UFactory xArm 6 using a general-purpose policy model. Our results show that integrating policy execution with anomaly detection and recovery increases the execution success rate in environments with various anomalies, such as trajectory deviations and adversarial human interventions
Öffentlichkeit und Transformation durch Thematisierung der Nicht-Thematisierung: Die Initiative Nachrichtenaufklärung und ihr Beitrag für eine transformative Kommunikationswissenschaft
Wer sich fragt, warum die Kommunikationswissenschaft als »öffentliche Wissenschaft« in den Medien so wenig thematisiert wird, muss die Thematisierungsfunktion der Medien kritisch hinterfragen. Seit bald 30 Jahren nimmt sich die Initiative Nachrichtenaufklärung (INA) e.V. dieser Aufgabe an und stellt sich dem Einfluss der sogenannten Künstlichen Intelligenz, der Desinformation sowie der Macht der Plattformen, der Ohnmacht der Rezipient:innen wie auch der Wissenschaft entgegen. Im Sinne einer transformativen öffentlichen Forschung publiziert die Initiative nach gemeinsamer Recherche und Diskussion von Wissenschaftler:innen, Journalist:innen und Expert:innen jährlich eine Liste vernachlässigter Nachrichten. Nachrichtenaufklärung wird verstanden und praktiziert als Kritik an der fehlenden Thematisierung und der Unterdrückung von Nachrichten und Diskursen. Nachrichtenvernachlässigung ist so gesehen auch eine Kategorie von Desinformation. Implementation of an Active Common Mode EMI Filter considering high Conducted Differential Mode EMI in Electric Vehicle On-Board Chargers
Conducted and radiated Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is of major concern in automotive On-Board Chargers (OBCs). Passive EMI Filters (PEFs) occupy a significant amount of space, whereas especially magnetic components like Common Mode Chokes (CMCs) and Differential Mode Chokes (DMCs) are the main cost and weight adders. Therefore, this paper proposes a Voltage Sense Current Inject (VSCI) Feedback (FB)-type Common Mode (CM) Active EMI Filter (AEF) that allows the usage of CMCs with smaller CM inductance. The AEF is part of the AC-input EMI filter of an OBC that can supply 11 kW of charging power in 1-phase (1 ph) and 3-phase (3 ph) operation. Analytical analysis is provided, which relates the AEF’s output voltage to the used CMC CM inductance and the fundamental switching frequency of the Power Factor Correction (PFC) system. It is shown that higher switching frequencies offer the possibility to decrease the CMC CM inductance without the risk to overload the AEF output. Furthermore, a leakage inductance estimation for current-unsymmetrical CMCs is provided and is experimentally validated. Conducted Emission (CE) measurements show the AEF performance and it is described how dedicated DMCs can be removed from the design. It was found that the benefit of a CM AEF in a Differential Mode (DM) dominant system is limited but can provide benefits for specific CM dominant harmonics within the regulated frequency range. A problem for AEFs is CM inductance degradation due to partial DM core saturation in CMCs. This phenomenon is experimentally investigated for ferrite and nanocrystalline CMCs
Protecting Children's Rights for Displaced Children during our Climate Crisis
It is estimated that children make up one-third of the world’s population. Nevertheless, they constituted 40 percent (49 million) of the 122.6 million forcibly displaced individuals in 2024. This blog post analyses a case study of 39 Ethiopian children detained in Zambia in 2016 due to their “consent to being smuggled”, and examines the challenge of protecting children’s rights in times of forced displacement. In light of the increasingly intertwined relationship between forced displacement and the climate crisis, action in terms of protecting children’s rights in this context is imperative at both domestic and international levels. The analysis concludes with a call for meaningful youth engagement and participation at the political level, drawing on insights from the Conferences of Parties (COP) that have signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
