    Exploring mental models of the right to informational self-determination of office workers in Germany

    Applied privacy research has so far focused mainly on consumer relations in private life. Privacy in the context of employment relationships is less well studied, although it is subject to the same legal privacy framework in Europe. The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has strengthened employees’ right to privacy by obliging that employers provide transparency and intervention mechanisms. For such mechanisms to be effective, employees must have a sound understanding of their functions and value. We explored possible boundaries by conducting a semistructured interview study with 27 office workers in Germany and elicited mental models of the right to informational self-determination, which is the European proxy for the right to privacy. We provide insights into (1) perceptions of different categories of data, (2) familiarity with the legal framework regarding expectations for privacy controls, and (3) awareness of data processing, data flow, safeguards, and threat models. We found that legal terms often used in privacy policies used to describe categories of data are misleading. We further identified three groups of mental models that differ in their privacy control requirements and willingness to accept restrictions on their privacy rights. We also found ignorance about actual data flow, processing, and safeguard implementation. Participants’ mindsets were shaped by their faith in organizational and technical measures to protect privacy. Employers and developers may benefit from our contributions by understanding the types of privacy controls desired by office workers and the challenges to be considered when conceptualizing and designing usable privacy protections in the workplace

    Moral Distress in Hospitals During the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Web-Based Survey Among 3,293 Healthcare Workers Within the German Network University Medicine

    Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between moral distress and mental health symptoms, socio-demographic, occupational, and COVID-19-related variables, and to determine differences in healthcare workers' (HCW) moral distress during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Data from 3,293 HCW from a web-based survey conducted between the 20th of April and the 5th of July 2020 were analyzed. We focused on moral distress (Moral Distress Thermometer, MDT), depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-2, PHQ-2), anxiety symptoms (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2, GAD-2), and increased general distress of nurses, physicians, medical-technical assistants (MTA), psychologists/psychotherapists, and pastoral counselors working in German hospitals. Results: The strongest correlations for moral distress were found with depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, occupancy rate at current work section, and contact with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Nurses and MTA experienced significantly higher moral distress than physicians, psychologists/psychotherapists, and pastoral counselors. The average level of moral distress reported by nurses from all work areas was similar to levels which before the pandemic were only experienced by nurses in intensive or critical care units. Conclusion: Results indicate that moral distress is a relevant phenomenon among HCW in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, regardless of whether they work at the frontline or not and requires urgent attention

    Irradiance and cloud optical properties from photovoltaic power data

    The rapid increase in solar photovoltaic (PV) installations worldwide has resulted in the electricity grid becoming increasingly dependent on atmospheric conditions, thus requiring more accurate forecasts of incoming solar irradiance. In this context, measured data from PV systems are a valuable source of information about the optical properties of the atmosphere, in particular the cloud optical depth (COD). This work reports first results from an inversion algorithm developed to infer global, direct and diffuse irradiance as well as atmospheric optical properties from PV power measurements, with the goal of assimilating this information into numerical weather prediction (NWP) models

    Presenteeism at university: Why do employees go to work sick and how can negative effects be mitigated?

    Hintergrund: Empirische Studien zeigen, dass mehr als zwei Drittel der Beschäftigten trotz Krankheit zur Arbeit gehen. Dieser sog. Präsentismus bringt sowohl gesundheitliche und motivationale Risiken für die Mitarbeiter als auch wirtschaftliche Risiken für die Organisation mit sich. Ziel der Arbeit: Die durchgeführten Studien fokussieren Möglichkeiten zur Verringerung der negativen gesundheitlichen Effekte und entwickeln Maßnahmen zur generellen Vermeidung von Präsentismus am spezifischen Setting Hochschule. Methode: An einer deutschen Hochschule erfolgte eine quantitative Befragung (n = 308) zur Prävalenz von Präsentismus, dessen Zusammenhang mit körperlichen Beschwerden untersucht wurde. Weiterhin wurden potenziell moderierende Effekte der Ressourcen Erholung, Achtsamkeit und Work-Life-Balance (WLB) betrachtet. Eine qualitative Studie explorierte auf Grundlage von Interviews (n = 11, qualitative Inhaltsanalyse) Gründe für Präsentismus und potenzielle Maßnahmen, um diesem entgegenzuwirken. Ergebnisse: Die quantitativen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Präsentismus im Hochschulkontext vertreten ist und körperliche Beschwerden begünstigt. Die Ressourcen Erholung, Achtsamkeit und WLB können bei hoher Ausprägung die negativen gesundheitlichen Effekte von Präsentismus abschwächen. Bei niedriger Ausprägung verstärken sie die Effekte. Die qualitative Analyse machte deutlich, dass quantitative Arbeitsbelastung, Pflichtgefühl sowie das Gefühl, noch leistungsfähig zu sein, zentrale Gründe für Präsentismus sind und zum Beispiel die Unterstützung eines gesundheitsförderlichen Organisationsklimas oder Vertretungsregelungen geeignete Gegenmaßnahmen darstellen. Diskussion: Die Ergebnisse werden vor dem Hintergrund verhaltens- und verhältnispräventiver Maßnahmen diskutiert und praktische Implikationen abgeleitet.Background: Empirical studies show that more than two thirds of employees go to work despite illness. This so-called presenteeism entails both health and motivational risks for the employees and economic risks for the organisation. Objectives: The studies were conducted to identify ways to reduce negative health effects and develop measures to generally avoid presenteeism in the specific setting of universities. Methods: A quantitative survey (308 participants) was conducted at a German university of applied sciences. The prevalence of presenteeism and the connection between presenteeism and physical complaints were investigated. Furthermore, potential moderating effects of the resources of recovery, mindfulness and work-life-balance were considered. A qualitative study based on interviews (11 participants, qualitative content analysis) explored reasons for presenteeism and potential measures to counteract it. Results: The quantitative results show that presenteeism exists in the university context and promotes physical complaints. The resources of recovery, mindfulness and work-life-balance can, when highly developed, mitigate the negative health effects of presenteeism. If they are only slightly pronounced, they intensify the effects. The qualitative analysis illustrated that quantitative workload, sense of duty and the feeling of still being able to perform are central reasons for presenteeism and that, for example the support of a health-promoting organisational climate or substitution arrangements are suitable countermeasures. Conclusions: The results are discussed against the background of behavioural as well as situational prevention, and practical implications are derived

    Factors influencing thermal conductivity and compressive strength of natural fiber-reinforced geopolymer foams

    New sustainable, environmentally friendly materials for thermal insulation of buildings are necessary to reduce their carbon footprints. In this study, Miscanthus fiber-reinforced geopolymer composites, foamed with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were developed using fly ash as a geopolymer precursor. The effects of fiber content, fiber size, curing temperature, foaming agent content, fumed silica specific surface area and fumed silica content on thermal conductivity and compressive strength were evaluated using a Plackett-Burman design of experiment. Furthermore, the microstructure of geopolymer composites was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The measured characteristic values were in the following ranges: Thermal conductivity 0.057 ​W ​(m ​K)−1 to 0.127 ​W ​(m ​K)−1, compressive strength 0.007 ​MPa–0.719 ​MPa and porosity 49 ​vol% to 76 ​vol%. The results reveal an enhancement of thermal conductivity by elevated fiber size and foaming agent content. In contrast, the compressive strength is enhanced by high fiber content. Additionally, SEM images indicate a good interaction between the fibers and the geopolymer matrix, because nearly the whole fiber surface is covered by the geopolymer

    Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of methylmalonic acidaemia and propionic acidaemia: First revision

    Isolated methylmalonic acidaemia (MMA) and propionic acidaemia (PA) are rare inherited metabolic diseases. Six years ago, a detailed evaluation of the available evidence on diagnosis and management of these disorders has been published for the first time. The article received considerable attention, illustrating the importance of an expert panel to evaluate and compile recommendations to guide rare disease patient care. Since that time, a growing body of evidence on transplant outcomes in MMA and PA patients and use of precursor free amino acid mixtures allows for updates of the guidelines. In this article, we aim to incorporate this newly published knowledge and provide a revised version of the guidelines. The analysis was performed by a panel of multidisciplinary health care experts, who followed an updated guideline development methodology (GRADE). Hence, the full body of evidence up until autumn 2019 was re‐evaluated, analysed and graded. As a result, 21 updated recommendations were compiled in a more concise paper with a focus on the existing evidence to enable well‐informed decisions in the context of MMA and PA patient care
