Effect of VOT on the Intelligibility of English Voiceless Stop Consonants Produced by Native Speakers of Japanese
Get PDFapplication/pdfThis study examined how the voice onset time (VOT) affected the intelligibility of English voiceless stops produced by 20 native Japanese speakers. Five native English speakers evaluated the intelligibility of three English voiceless stops in the word-initial position of the words,“ pet,”“ Ted,” and“ keck” when pronounced by native Japanese speakers. The VOT for each production was measured, and its relationship with intelligibility was examined. The results showed that /t/ and /k/ have the lowest and highest intelligibility, respectively. When voiceless stops were pronounced by native Japanese speakers with lower intelligibility, the native English speakers heard most of them as voiced. An acoustic analysis indicated that Japanese English stops with lower intelligibility had a shorter VOT than did those with higher intelligibility. Japanese English voiceless stops were highly intelligible when the VOT was longer than 30 ms for /p/, around 50 ms or longer for /t/, and about 55 ms or longer for /k/. Changes in U. S. Tariffs and Three Revolutions at the End of the 19th Century
Get PDFapplication/pdfAn American prominent diplomatic historian, Walter Lafeber said that changes in U. S. tariffs triggered two revolutions and accelerated a third in sugar islands in the 1890s. Many scholars have observed the relationship between them, but some have misunderstood. This paper attempts to correct thesemisunderstandings. One of the misunderstandings relates to the reciprocity of the Makinley Tariff. It offered not a differential advantage but only a differential advantage to the sugar islands. Secondly, misunderstandings relate to the relationship between the Makinley Tariff and the Hawaiian Reciprocity Treaty that gave Hawaiian sugar a differential advantage. The former made the latter invalid. That gave rise to an attempt to regain its sugar’s preferential position by getting the Makinley Tariff’s bounty. Thirdly, misunderstandings relate to the effects of the sugar schedule on the Makinley Tariff. The Sugar Trust had preferred centrifugal sugar to widen the margin between the price of refined sugar and that of raw sugar. The uniform duty on raw sugar of the Makinley Tariff put spurt the trend. Therefore, the importation of centrifugal sugar increased that manufactured in a few islands and colonies, such as Cuba, Hawaii, and Dutch East India.departmental bulletin pape
What factors affect the hesitation in eating rice balls made by others? : From the viewpoint of obsessive-compulsive tendency and parent-child confidential relationships.
Get PDFapplication/pdfThe purpose of this study was to understand what factors, in terms of obsessive-compulsive tendency and parent-child confidential relationships, affect the hesitation in eating rice balls made by others. In this study, conditions of making methods of rice balls (made with bare hands or with using plastic wrap) and of makers of rice balls (made by their own family members or by people other than family members) were examined. The results indicated that, even though rice balls were made by family member or not, and with bare hands or with plastic wrap,“ becoming contaminated” in obsessive-compulsive tendency could positively predict and “mentoring” of father in parent-child confidential relationship negatively predicted the hesitation in eating rice balls made by others. In addition, it is found that mother’s and father’s confidential relationship with child have differential effects to the hesitation in eating rice balls made by others. Lacks of“ parent support” and“ benevolent watch” of mother, and“ emotional control” of father affected the hesitation in eating rice balls made by others, yet depending on the conditions. The results suggested that it is important to avoid excessive cleannessconscious attitudes at home and to develop a good parent-child confidential relationship, in order to reduce a feeling of hesitation in eating rice balls made by others.departmental bulletin pape

Identity of the 4th and 5th generation of Japanese Immigrants in Hawaii
Get PDFThe purpose of this paper is to clarify the identity of the 4th and 5th generation of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii. The survey was conducted on three people in English. The conclusions are as follows;
1) The identities of the three people are very different from each other and cannot simply be generalized.
2) On the other hand, there are three things in common.
(1) They believe that the 4th and 5th generation of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii and the people who were born and grew up in the mainland of US are same“ American” but distinguished from each other.
(2) They have some experience of facing an identity crisis or questioning their own identities when they travelled abroad.
(3) Their identities are fluid and multitiered.
This paper is one of the very first reports on the identities of the 4th and 5th generation of Japanese immigrants in Hawaii. More research is needed to get an accurate picture of their identities.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFapplication/pdf本研究では，患者とのコミュニケーションについて，医療ソーシャルワーカー ( 以下，MSW) にアンケート調 査を実施し，その分析結果から精神的負担や困難性を感じている場面について明らかにし，有効なコミュニケー ションを図るための課題について検証した。その結果，MSW がコミュニケーション方法を実行した際の精神的 負担度は「相手の話をさえぎらずに最後まできく」が一番多く，患者とコミュニケーションを図る上で感じる困 難さと精神的負担度との間に有意な関連性が一番みられたものは「相手の判断で進んでいけるように命令的指示 をしないよう配慮する」であった。短縮される在院日数の中で患者と信頼関係を築くべくコミュニケーションを とっていく必要がある。今後，医療情勢の変遷および現代社会の移り変わり，患者の症状や環境の多様化に応じ たコミュニケーションのあり方について，さらに調査・分析していくことが必要である。In this study, we conducted a questionnaire-based survey of medical social workers (MSW) regarding their communication with patients. The survey revealed the situations in which MSWs experienced communicational diffi culties and mental strain. We also explored the actions to be taken to establish effective communication. “Listening to the other person without interruption” imposed the most mental strain on MSWs in their communication with patients. A signifi cant relationship between the diffi culties experienced in communication with patients and mental strain was most pronounced in “being careful not to give instructions imperatively, to be able to proceed according to the other person’s decision.” It is necessary to establish communication that builds trust with patients within a reduced hospital stay. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct more research and analysis on how communication ought to be and to adapt to changes in medical circumstances, societal changes, and the diversity of patient symptoms and environments.報告departmental bulletin pape
