NASA's Global Change Master Directory
The Global Change Master Directory is a very large directory to Earth science data and services. Users can search for datasets by a number of Earth Science topics such as agriculture, atmosphere, oceans, climate indicators, and more. A detailed description is provided for each dataset as well as a link to the data center housing the dataset. Some records link directly to the data. Some of the datasets are in a downloadable format and are ready to use, while others require preparation
The Landslide Handbook: A Guide to Understanding Landslides
For students of the geophysical sciences and policy makers, this very helpful document will be a most valuable reference tool. Written by Lynn M. Highland of the United States Geological Survey with Peter Bobrowsky of the Geological Survey of Canada, the handbook is divided into three sections and four appendices. Illustrated with charts, tables, and photographs the work covers basic information (such as "What is a landslide?") and information on how to evaluate landslide hazards and landslide mitigation techniques for residences and businesses. The hope is that this handbook will also help "homeowners, community and emergency managers, and decision makers to take the positive step of encourage awareness of available options and recourse in regard to landslide hazard." Finally, it is worth noting that users can download the entire handbook, or download sections of particular interest
A Visit to Southern Africa
The NCSR Pictorial Series of presentations are designed to provide faculty, teachers and other natural resource professionals an informal PowerPoint presentation on selected environmental settings. The presentations consist of pictures of the natural environment and feature plants, animals and landscapes of the area. The presentation's intended theme is to show diverse audiences interesting aspects of various environments. As a result, the presentations can stimulate learning more about the features of various natural settings and why they are both different and changing. The photography in these presentations is by Lester Reed, NCSR Project Director. On safari in Southern Africa, animals, trees, and landscapes from the countries of Botswana, Namibia and Southern Africa are included here. Learn bits of information about their habitat and behaviors
Culture and Maintenance of Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Lia Kent, of Stemgent's Research and Development team, has created this video to demonstrate feeding, removing differentiation from, and passaging human embryonic stem cells. The video is also accompanied by protocols for thawing and freezing hES cells, discussion, materials, references, a forum for comments, and a PDF of the full text
Voice-Over-Internet Protocol
This website, authored by the Federal Communications Commission, presents guidelines and frequently asked questions regarding voice-over-internet phone calls. This method involves transmitting your voice as a converted digital signal over the internet. The page provides diagrams illustrating methods used in this process. It also had links to articles relating to voice-over-internet phone technology. Overall, the site provides good descriptions of the technology and illuminates many of its positive characteristics
Fundamentals of Energy in Buildings
Part of MIT\'s innovative OpenCourseWare Project, that provides materials from MIT classes to the public on the web, this site provides materials from a undergraduate introductory course on energy issues in buildings. Topics covered include heating and cooling systems, heat transfer of building materials, air and water vapor effects, and design strategies. The site provides a syllabus, references for readings, lecture notes, assignments, exams, and potential projects
Outdoor Action Guide to Animal Tracking
This is the Outdoor Action Guide to Animal Tracking by Rick Curtis of Princeton University. This website provides solid and detailed information on many aspects of animal tracking including parts of a track, pattern classification, aging tracks, and more. The guide is available in PDF or HTMl format, and contains useful charts that will help novice trackers learnthe complex art of tracking. The "Animal Tracking Cards" available on the site are a great resource for committing basic tracking information to memory. Print the cards out and use them as flash cards, or as reference materials for your next tracking session
This Quantum World
This web site provides an introduction to the quantum world and the difficulties that arise in understanding quantum measurements. It focuses on results of measurements, ontology, the modern controversies, and what quantum mechanics is trying to tell us about the nature of Nature
Nanophotonics & Metamaterials
