Online Curriculum for Science and Engineering Ethics
Created with funds provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the International Dimensions of Ethics Education in Science & Engineering (IDEESE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst provides high-quality online and classroom-based materials for science and engineering disciplines. This site allows users to access a set of different curricula, complete with cases and related resources based on real events with international ethnical dimensions. There are five online cases here, and they deal with the a variety of controversies, including the SARS virus outbreak and the recruitment of egg donors by South Korean stem cell researchers. Each of the cases comes with a case-situation summary and supporting materials such as interviews, discussion questions, and classroom activities. Engineering students and teachers will find that the breadth of these materials offers a thought-provoking experience designed to complement the more formal scientific materials that are traditionally part of this field of study
Math and Metaphor: Using Poetry to Teach College Mathematics
For young people, mathematics can be terribly frightening, boring, or confusing. It can be hard to break through to individuals who may have had a difficult first experience with the subject. That's why Professor Patrick Bahls of the University of North Carolina, Asheville decided to try something a bit different. In the fall of 2007, he began to have math students write short poems offering some insight into their experiences with mathematics. The results were quite intriguing, and his article on what he learned is well worth a read. In this 15-page article, he shares experiences from the classroom, several of his students' poems, and information on how metaphors can be used to assist with the process. For those people actively involved with teaching math, this article is quite a find. The work is rounded out by the survey questions that he used with students to have them reflect on the process of writing poetry
Statistics for Applications
Dmitry Panchenko of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an undergraduate course in Statistics for Applications. The site features lecture notes, a syllabus and assignments. Course topics include hypothesis testing and estimation, confidence intervals, chi-square tests, nonparametric statistics, analysis of variance, regression and correlation. This is a nice example of a course structure for an applied statistics course
Physics Classroom: Circular Motion
This resource guides the user through characteristics of circular motion. The same concepts and principles used to describe the motion of an object can also be used to describe and explain the motion of objects in circular pathways. This tutorial is broken into five sections addressing: the mechanics of circular motion, centripetal force, algebraic and trigonometric problems and solutions, and a full chapter that debunks the centrifugal "force" misconception. The interactive problems use diagrams and force vectors to help students visualize how vector components affect the way circular motion is characterized

Women in Engineering: A Review of the 2008 Literature
This literature review covers 300 articles on women in engineering and women's access and preparation for engineering careers. The review is also applicable to working women in general. Topics include work/life balance, pathways to an engineering career, work force issues that impact women engineers, and international literature on women in engineering. Research methods are emphasized and articles with strong methods are highlighted while articles with weak methodology were rejected outright

Declining Expectations - The Phenomenon of Shifting Baselines
This instructional guide is designed to provide instructors with lecture support on the concept of shifting baselines and its application to marine fisheries. Shifting baselines are defined and their contribution to fishery declines discussed.
